The Glidecam HD1000 is a lightweight, hand-held camcorder stabilizing system. This system is upgraded from the 1000 Pro and offers fine adjustments and an improved gimbal and balance system.

Camera stabilization systems like this one work to provide camera stability during movement for dynamic and subjective camera shots. It utilizes a balancing system that dampens the user's body movement, providing a smooth, floating moving image appearance usually achieved with more expensive equipment.

I bought this to improve the quality and range of shots in my home movies. I am really looking forward to see what I can do with it. For the past year or more, I have been reading about stabilizers and experimenting with my own homemade contraptions. None of them come close to the quality of Glidecam. Read that headline again. This is a precision instrument built to exacting standards. You could use it as a gram scale. The assembly took mere minutes. Learning to properly balance it has taken a couple of hours so far. Now that I have it spot on, it is easy to see that it will perform as intended and advertised. It is also easy to see that this will require exercise, practice time and relaxed, balanced movements to use properly. This is not a magic wand that will remove caffeine jitters and clumsy handling from your shooting. What it will do is allow you much greater control over your camera and make it seem to float on air with practice. Once you get your head around each individual angle and knob adjustment and just what effect it has on balancing, the job gets easier. Having a stand to place it on will help greatly in this effort. I used a microphone stand with great success, though I'll bet that the docking bracket is wonderful. I also found that hanging a white plumb-line from the ceiling and comparing it to the grid marks in my viewfinder was a great shortcut to finding vertical balance. I am surprised this tip is not included in the instructions. Take advantage of all the web resources and videos that are available for this and other stabilizers when preparing to make your purchase and set up. I shopped and researched for months before deciding that the HD1000 would be a perfect fit for my lightweight HD camcorder (SONY HD-SR12). Finally having it in my hands, camera on, unit balanced, I am certain that I made the right choice. Just remember, balancing it is the key! Working with it even slightly out of balance would be like playing a guitar that is out of tune. The other key is informed practice. Take a look at others who are using similar devices and see what they have to say about breathing, posture and movement before giving up on this experiment. This is just a tool, and like any other tool, it will take time to develop skill with it. After all, you wouldn't buy a guitar and expect to sound like a pro as soon as you get home from the shop, right? The only con I have found so far is that the one hex-bolt is non-metric. In Japan, those wrenches are not so easy to find. B&H stands to make some friends if they start including an Allen wrench (hex key) in their international orders...This link from the manufacturer's website should help with balance issues:[@] Also, be sure to check out the great tests and demos on Youtube.com and enjoy making great video!

I bought this to do steadicam-type moves with my Canon T2i. On that note, I have failed miserably, but with enough practice I might get the hang of it. So far, my videos have come out looking more like it was shot by a tippy drunken sailor. That's not to say I'm completely incompetent with its use, I am fairly learned but this device really tests my patience.

Set up and balancing was straightforward: I was able to level it horizontally and vertically using the thumbscrew-type adjustment knobs, and added weights to the base to make sure I got a 2-3 second drop. The manual doesn't include instructions on how to use the base weight extension wings. I have left them in their default position. After setting it up, I noticed that it goes off balance after a few minutes of use, this after I have tightened every bolt that there is to tighten. In this sense, it is unreliable.

Overall, the construction is solid, with great attention paid to the 3-axis gimble. I'm not very impressed with the sled and quick-release plate. The quality feels a tad hobbyist in construction.

That said, I think I need more practice to get my shots to any sort of usable level, but so far I remain unimpressed.

Comments about Glidecam HD1000 Stabilizer System:

I'm using it with a Sony NEX5r and pancake lens. I bought the manfrotto quick release system and still had to put another weight under the cheese plate to get enough weight on top. Balancing took about an hour since I had never used one before. There's a good video by Devin on YouTube that shows proper hand placement; the manual didn't quite get it right.

Comments about Glidecam HD1000 Stabilizer System:

I have been struggling finding the right stabilizer, I have got ones that just haven't worked with my camera making me have to send them back but after days of research I came across the Glidecam HD 1000, I had seen it before but I wasn't sure cause it have a fairly high price, but when I watched/read multiple reviews on it, it actually seemed to be perfect for what I am focusing on. Checking into the price I found it the cheapest new on B&H and that if your looking for a high quality stabilizer this is surprisingly cheap for it to be such good quality. When I got the package I found that its exactly like it said, easy to setup, smooth, and gets awesome shots! I will be using it for filming skiing and action sports mainly and the camera I use is a canon rebel t5i with an 18-135mm lens, the stabilizer works perfectly with it! if you are wanting to do similar filming or really any other type I would highly suggest this stabilizer for not only its quality but its price as well.

Comments about Glidecam HD1000 Stabilizer System:

The Glidecam HD1000was fairly easy to balance with my Canon 7D using the electronic level. It works well but I think I'm pushing the limits with the 7D, Canon 10-22mm lens, and the Giotto MH621 quick release system. It took a good hour to set up the glidecam and balance the system. The build quality is excellent and I like the fact that I can place the system down while keeping it straigt up instead of laying it down on its side like the merlin. This setup that I have is fairly heavy but I use it for 5 second clips so it is not to bad. If you don't use the Giotto quick release, it becomes a lot lighter because you can remove some weights too. I did some test shoots running without really practicing and I was really impressed. Any Canon 50mm lens would work well as well with the HD1000. Great investment. If you plan on using more heavier lens, the HD2000 would be better...and heavier

Comments about Glidecam HD1000 Stabilizer System:

I bought the 1000HD because I need a small stabilizer. I work on my own mostly, shooting spots for businesses. The gear I can carry or use in the generally short shoot time is limited and this tool ads a dimension to my videos that I could not achieve any other way. I use a 5Dmk2 with WA primes. That said, it's not perfect. I think because of it's lower mass, the friction, play and balance in the gimbal is much more critical. Rotation of the gimbal has a greater effect on the operation than on larger Glidecams. Balance is really critical and always seems to need tweaking. With the load I am giving it, It's only achieved with a long swing time of around 2.7 secs, which makes handling more critical. If you have wind expect frustration.I am going to experiment by reducing the counter weight slightly and will probably grind down a couple of the supplied weights so I can extend the post a fraction.I am not shooting feature films however and it does the job, so I can't gripe too much and I would buy it again.

I was kind of intimidated by the Glidecam HD1000 as I have never used a stabilizer. To my surprise the HD1000 was very easy to balance and set up out of the box. It only took me 15 minutes to put it together and balance a Canon 60d. Then I broke it down and mounted my GoPro Hero 3 in another 5 mins.

With no prior stabilizer experience I am able to get amazing results with the Glidecam HD1000. I can't recommend it enough!

I needed something more stable than my Vixia's in-camera stabilization program and this seems to be the product to have without breaking the bank. Balancing was relatively easy, and now it's just about practice, practice, practice. The quality of my HD 1000 is very good, and I look forward to getting smoother shots. Since my Canon Vixia is so light, I had to remove the "sleds" at the base, and move the weights (one each side)closer to the center post to achieve the 2-3 second drop from horizontal. There are several good videos on youtube that detail the balancing process.

Awesome system. If you are looking to put more than a body and lens on this thing you should be looking at the HD2000 or HD4000. I put a t3i, Bower 14mm 2.8, and manfrotto quick release on this thing and its maxed out. Works great, but I thought maybe I could sneak on a lightweight LED light. NOPE! I plan on using this for real estate videos mostly so no big deal.

I use this for video,it glides perfectly once balanced properly,be sure to read the manual it helps, also I have a 5d mark ii and a 50mm f/1.4,and all i used were 3 weights on each side and expanded the telescope post.Do yourself a favor and buy this instead of the flycam, you wont regret it.

This stabilizer works great. That doesn't mean it is easy to set up though. It is acctually quite difficult to balance at first, you just have to be patient though. The direction are almost useless and very vague but the assembly is practically a no brainer anyway. It does what it is supposed to do wants you get used to it and work out the kinks

Comments about Glidecam HD1000 Stabilizer System:

I did a lot of research before I finally pulled the trigger for this thing. I have a nikon d7000 with a tokina 11-16mm. This is pretty much the max weight for the hd1000. Fortunately it works just fine and I lve the small compactness of it. It took me a very long time to balance this sucker but I knew going into it that it would not be a piece of cake. Once it's stabilized it works like a dream! My footage is smooth and gliding through the air. Yes it is heavy but the more you use it, the more stamina you build in your arm. Its not like I'm shooting footage for more than 2 or 3 minutes anyways. I bought a manfrotto quick release so that I wouldn't have to unscrew the plate every time I wanna take it off, but for the hd1000 it was too heavy. If you plan on using accessories and add ons, definitely buy the hd 2000 or 40000All in all this thing is awesome. It will set your shots apart from others with the smoothness and steady camera movements. Make sure you're ready to spend some time on this before you buy it. If you take the time to learn how to use it, it'll pay off in the end!

Comments about Glidecam HD1000 Stabilizer System:

The Glidecam HD1000 overall a great tool. It can provide almost dolly like shots, elegant and smooth movement, and interesting transition shots. The HD1000 is for cameras 1 to 3.5 pounds. Keep that in mind! This is perfectly fine for cameras such as the Canon T2i or T3i with a kit lens. However once you start adding lcd monitors, microphones, etc. on top of it you might run into some issues. If you are using a DSLR larger than a T2i or GH2 then you might want to consider buying a Glidecam HD2000 which can even support a Canon 5D MKII.

There is a learning curve with this product. Mainly, with setup. When you first take it out of the box everything screws together nicely. However balancing the unit, which is critical to how it operates, can be quite difficult. The fine tuning knobs is a nice upgrade from previous models (PRO series) and makes it much easier to get perfect balance. However, even with this knob it can be quite frustrating to get the unit to balance for the first time. If you are having any difficulties, you can contact Glidecam and they respond rather quickly.
Once thing I did not like about the design was the way the counter weights were attached to the unit. Instead of having a quick release, the weights on each side are held in by two screws and nuts on each side. It can be frustrating to have unscrew and screw the weights back in each time you have to add or take one off. Except for this I did not find many complaints with the unit. The build quality is great, and the product is manufactured here in the USA.
Overall I do recommend this product. Its a great stabilizer for a great price. Before you purchase it however, make sure you watch a couple of demonstration or sample videos to make sure this is something that you could use. This product isn't for everyone. Its not really a portable stabilizer you could bring on a family vacation. If you can afford the setup time and arm fatigue then sure it could work, however its not too realistic. For film making aspects, this is not a quick shoot stabilizing tool such as a shoulder rig. Shots need to be planned out before hand and practiced. However, if done right the visuals obtained can increase production value. I would very much recommend this product to any film maker with a fairly light weight camera/lens kit who is looking to add interesting and breath taking shots to their productions.
