Product Highlights
  • HDV
  • CompactFlash Recording

The Sony HVR-MRC1 is a CompactFlash recording unit designed specifically for the HVR-Z7U, HVR-Z5U, and HVR-S270U HDV cameras. The unit attaches directly to the camera and records up to 72 minutes (on a 16GB card) of HDV ready-to-edit footage. The card records the same .M2T files that are created when capturing HDV footage from tape and provides seamless integration with virtually all non-linear editing systems. Footage can be recorded to both tape and CompactFlash simultaneously, instantly archiving footage while still gaining the workflow efficiency of tape-based media.

Record HDV Directly to CompactFlash
The HVR-MRC1 revolutionizes how users can record HDV footage to their camera. By using widely available CompactFlash cards, the HVR-Z7U, HVR-Z5U and HVR-S270U can be automatically transformed into a camera with tapeless workflow. Additionally, DV/DVCAM can be recorded to avi/dv files.

I have been using this unit on my Z5U for almost 2 months now and I must say that tape is dead for me. I have used it while running tape and without tape in the camera and it works flawlessly. No dropped frames or dropouts. Records 24p and 30p as well. HDV, DVCAM , and DV without a problem. I have 2 16GB 233 cards and I get about 72 minutes per card. It takes about 12 minutes to transfer the footage to my laptop in the field. The unit comes with a mounting bracket (fits on hot shoe) to use on other cameras and just for fun I tried it on a couple of old Sony HD cameras (HDR HC3 and a Z1U) I had laying around the shop. If it has a Firewire connection it seems to work. I set the camera up (older models must have a tape to work with the record button on the camera) and when I hit record on the camera the unit began to record onto the CF card. Footage looked great. Without a tape in the camera you just keep the camera on standby and press record (you must hit 2 buttons on the MRC1 simultaneously) It records the image without any of the menu items showing up .. so you can use your old equipment to record tapeless. Sony NP batteries power the unit when it is not attached to my Z5 … but it also has a DC in plug that works with most of the Sony AC power adapters out there. It is nice to have the tape back-up but I must say that dumping 72 minutes worth of footage onto my computer in 12 to 15 minutes is sweet. It will also do interval recording and slow mo when attached to the Z5U. Slow mo function is limited on the Z5U from 3 seconds to 12 seconds with quality deteriorating as you get closer to 12 seconds. It will play your footage back as well .. onto another camera deck or monitor if its equipped with a Firewire. I have not tried it with any other manufacturer’s cameras.
Good job Sony, I can't find a thing wrong with it, except for the way it shortens battery life when attached to the Z5U. You need to buy NP 970 batteries .. then you get 300 plus minutes running both the camera and the MRC1.

This device was acquired for use in live event coverage where long/continuous recording is necessary. Unfortunately the device malfunctioned during a shoot. I had it recording on HDV mode for about 33 minutes into the shoot when I realized the timecode counter froze. The record light was still on but nothing was being recorded. After pressing the stop button several times, I then tried to switch off the unit. The record light remained on and the screen never reset. I then performed a hard power shut down by removing the battery. I got the device to power down and reset. I was able to record again. The video was saved but only up to the 33 minute point before the crash.
I was using a 600x SanDisk Extreme Pro 32gb CF card.

I just received 3 days ago. I am running a Sony HVR HD 1000-U camera and all I can say is thank you SONY!!! I like the camera but I hate tape. Continually had problems with tape even though I was using sony tapes and keeping the heads clean. The nightmare is over. This is absolutely the best purchase I have invested in for my video equipment. B&H you are the absolute best with all your products no one else can even come close. So if you use tape and want the headaches to go away this is what you need. LOVE IT!

          Perfect Addition to Canon XH-A1

Comments about Sony HVR-MRC1 Memory Recording Unit:

I've had this unit a little over a year with perfect results connected to my Canon XH-A1. (A tape based last generation camera.)
I am an amateur who records mainly live events with two or more cameras. With a 32 GB ScanDisk 60 MB/s UDMA CF card I can record 145 minutes at the highest quality HD from the Canon.
The MRU not only records 1080i, but also Canon's unusual 24 fps 1080p. Upload times changed from realtime (tape) to around one third the recording time. Tape dropouts are a thing of the past.
Finally, since I'm using the unit on a non-Sony product, I was able to use the battery carrier that came with the unit. Note, you do not need a large battery to record long intervals of time. My NP-F570 will run the unit four or five times the 145 minute capacity of a 32 GB memory.
Only drawback, is having to mount it on the hot shoe which displaces my shotgun mic. I tried to velcro the unit to the back of the XH-A1, but when the battery heated up, it unglued itself. The firewire saved the equipment!

Video capture with my Sony HVR-V1u used to take hours. Now with the Sony HVR-MRC1 it can be accomplished in seconds. The improved workflow using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 is truly amazing. If you are still using tape you have to get one of these units and you will never use tape again. Setup is a piece of cake and the reliablity factor is 100%, hey, it's a Sony!

I really enjoy shooting my videos to this device. I bought this recently and only regret is I should buy this recording unit earlier. You can depend on this. Don't bother about cassettes. A 32GB card can take upto 2.5 hrs. So the only concern is if you want to shoot video 4 hours or more you need a 64GB card and that could be expensive.

At first was put off by the high tag, but as I used it more and more it became apparent that it was worth every dollar. Did have to go through a few CompactFlash cards experimenting. Could not rely on the cheap stuff, so if your shoot is valuable invest on the best media card you can afford. Was able to use a 32GB card with the Sony F970 battery with no problem using my Z5U camera. To play back you can use the attached AC adaptor or leave it on the camera depending on your cables to be used.

                          Great addition. Recommend it.

Comments about Sony HVR-MRC1 Memory Recording Unit:

We shoot long-form events (weddings, concerts, meetings/speeches, etc) which are often one-off situations. After an unfortunate situation that we found a few of our Sony Z5Us had not recorded an hours worth of footage due to bad heads, we realized it's time for redundancy.

We use four of the MRC1s on two Z7Us and two Z5Us. They work perfectly--exactly as described. Our days of capturing hours upon hours of tape are finally over.

I wish that for such a vital product, Sony had re-thought placement on the camera as the unit needs to come completely off to swap batteries. Another note; using the Z5U or Z7U with this unit DOES DECREASE rated battery life on "L" batteries. On average, we get about ~300 minutes on a fully charged NP-F970 battery.

Comments about Sony HVR-MRC1 Memory Recording Unit:

We have used these for two years as the primary recording device on our Sony V5u's, with tape as backup. They perform flawlessly. They integrate with the cameras beautifully. I especially like the fast transfer rate when ingesting into our editing workstations.

The one problem we had was with the Kingston flash memory cards. We purchased six 32 GB cards, and two were not operable with the MRC1's. The others have worked flawlessly. Sony tells me that the problem is in the 32 GB size....That the recorders are only designed to operate up to 16 GB. Funny though...Nowhere does the Sony literature state this. I don't believe it! Just beware.

Comments about Sony HVR-MRC1 Memory Recording Unit:

I have a z7u and it has MORE than proven to be a trusty camera that has gotten me through many shoots both locally and overseas, resulting in decent quality footage and happy clients. However, I also came to realize the MRC1's ability to create redundant footage is invaluable in more ways than one!

It is quite common for me to shoot in hot zones with a high police, military or "government" presence. One time, during a run-in with some overzealous officials, I was asked to hand over my camera. However, instead of having to give them my gear, I was able to open up the miniDV compartment and just hand over the miniDV tape containing the footage I had taken. This appeased them and I was able to go on my way, camera in hand. The thing is, since I also had the MRC1, I still had the footage on a CF card!

Now when I go on a shoot, I ALWAYS make sure to have a miniDV in the camera housing should I ever need to use it as a sacrificial offering. This unit is of enough value to me that I'm even thinking of picking up an extra z5u while they're still available, to use with my MRC1, just to have that option alone. Now I think I would actually be uncomfortable using a camera that only has one type of recording media.

Use for almost a year with Sony HVR-Z5, very convenient to duplicate the recording tape + flash. You can record only the flash, but you can consistently, when the tape ends the record will continue to flash. In other words 100% insurance against data loss.

Comments about Sony HVR-MRC1 Memory Recording Unit:

Purchased the MRC1 to make the transfer of video into Final Cut Pro faster and easier. Previously I had to log and capture at real time. Takes about an hour to read the manual and to understand the different functions of the MRC1 and to load the software into FCP. The clips from the card are imported thru LOG AND TRANSFER in FCP. NOTE: You need the CD software to make the transfer work. The MRC1 clips easily on the back of the Z5U. I haven't noticed the additional weight, but one draw back is you have to remove the MRC1 to change the camera battery. Another is the file name when the clips are imported is really long. I'm using a 32G card which is plenty. I use the Z5U for ENG shooting. I'd recommend the MRC1. I only record on the MRC1 to a card now and leave a tape in the camera as a back up for important jobs. It is great being able to choose between recording on tape or card. Hope this help - the unit would be even better if it was cheaper!

I have two of these units. One for the Sony Z5U and one for FX1000. Unit attaches directly to Z5 which is great. operates Perfectly! The FX 1000 it has to be attached by cable No Problem takes a little more awareness. FX 1000 does not control unit but Z5U does.
Video Tape ?? What is that? Compact Flash Cards all the way! I have saved a bundle of money not buying Tapes. Only time I use tape is when I have to for the customer. Down load to computer for edit is 1/4 of the time.
I would not hesitate to purchase MCR1 again.
