Questions? Ask our experts:

The Olympus UFL-2 is designed to work perfectly with Olympus digital SLR cameras in compatible underwater housings. The strobe is packed with features to meet the challenges of digital photography in the underwater environment. The strobe can be fired with an Olympus sync cord connected to the housing's bulkhead, or with a fiber optic cable connecting the strobe's slave sensor with the camera's built-in flash. Both TTL and manual exposure is supported. You can even control the strobe's power in remote control mode through the camera's control panel.

The strobe's Auto-Focus Illuminator Light will allow your camera to focus on night dives or inside caves and wrecks. Other features include manual control power dial, test button and a easy to see control panel. In FP mode you can even sync to fast shutter speeds.

Strobes are extremely important for your underwater imaging system. The ocean is one big, blue filter. As you descend, the reds and oranges quickly become muted shades of blue and gray. Firing a color corrected strobe light on your subject will bring back your subject's natural color. With a recycle time of approximately five seconds, a 78° beam angle and a guide number that varies from 20 to 36, this strobe will help you to produce stunning underwater photographs.

Comments about Olympus UFL-2 Strobe Head Only:

I purchased the UFL-2 strobe unit for my new Olympus E-PL5 camera and PT-EP10 underwater housing, together with the optional diffuser, PTSA-03 short arm, and fibre optic cable.

The purpose was to upgrade from the point-and-shoot camera and underwater housing I was previously using for underwater photography while scuba diving, and hopefully to obtain better quality images.

When I assembled the housing and strobe for the first time, I was concerned about the overall size and weight of the assembly. It weighed over 6 pounds, and seemed very large and cumbersome compared to my other camera's underwater housing.

Also, the PTSA-03 short arm did not have the design flexibility to permit the strobe to be mounted slightly off to one side or the other to reduce backscatter. It would only pivot forward and back, and allow the strobe to be angled upward or downward somewhat, not to the side.

Once in the water I discovered that the overall weight was not an issue. In fact, I found that the strobe unit if anything was too positively buoyant underwater, making it a little bit of a challenge for single-handed operation when I was wishing to turn the housing sideways to take a photo. The strobe unit would want to 'weather-vane' upward because of this buoyancy.

Similarly, I found that I had no issue with backscatter, even while taking photos during night dives.

For battery consumption, I found that I would need to replace the AA batteries after every three dives, while taking on average 50 images per dive. I typically replaced the batteries before they were fully exhausted.

On occasion, I found that the fibre optic cable, because of its length, tended to get in the way and sometimes interfere with operation of the housing shutter switch. To address this I wrapped the cable around the short arm once, to keep it away from the buttons at the top of the housing.

One minor con: I found the LCD display on the strobe unit, because of its small size, sometimes difficult to read when the ambient light was bright, such as outdoors in sunlight.

Comments about Olympus UFL-2 Strobe Head Only:

I purchased this as a second strobe head for my underwater gear. It has performed without issues, and greatly adds to the capabilities of my underwater rig. It is lightweight, so not too heavy in the carry on luggage. The exposures are spot on, assuming you are within range. I should note that most of my diving, and subsequent use of the product, is in the Cayman Islands, so visibility is typically good. You mileage may vary based on where you use it and the visibility you have where you dive.

                    Highly recommend this product.

Comments about Olympus UFL-2 Strobe Head Only:

I have this strobe for 1 year and used it on 2 dive trips before this past week. Last week while on vacation I was setting up my gear when the plastic holding the screws in to hold the housing togedther crumbled in my hand. I have never dropped this strobe or caused any damage to be done to it for it to break in this way. I brought it back to Olympus to have it repaired and explained what happened and all I have heard from them is that it would not break this way and I must have dropped it. When I brought it in I had the customer service rep look it over for any other damage and he could not find any proving it was not dropped. Olympus refuses to belive me and will not stand by its product!! They want to charge me $400 to fix it and after days of arguing back and forth I have gotten no where! Before this I swore by Olympus products, but now I will be buying other brands going forward! DO NOT RISK YOUR MONEY!!! there are plenty of other companies out there that make very good underwater strobes and I'm sure they will stand by their products better than Olympus does!

Comments about Olympus UFL-2 Strobe Head Only:

This strobe is typical of the power and features that strobes in this price range. The beam angle is a little narrow, so be sure to get the diffuser when you order. That ticked me off a little when I saw shat Olympus wanted for a diffuser that other manufacturers charge $10 for. This is almost 5times that price. The strobe has other good features, such as a modeling light, but that cant be used unless you have a sync cord attached. My fibre optic cable fires the strobe reliably and the camera syncs well with it. I'm mostly pleased with the strobe
