The EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens from Canon is a compact, lightweight and very versatile zoom lens that is specifically designed for the range of APS-C format EOS DSLR cameras with the EF-S lens mount. Combining powerful performance with high image quality, this lens offers the equivalent focal length range of 29-320mm in 35mm format. It is ideal as a general-purpose zoom lens, providing coverage from a wide angle to a telephoto perspective.

The EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens incorporates Canon's 4-stop compensation Image Stabilizer technology. This allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 times slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. Aspherical and UD lens elements minimize aberrations and contribute to overall image quality and fine delineation. A zoom lock lever holds the zoom in place at its widest point so that it does not extend while not in use. A wide rubberized zoom ring provides smooth and comfortable control over focal length adjustment.

Note! Compatible with cameras that have APS-C size sensors

Image Stabilizer
4 stop Image Stabilizer (IS) extends low light options to previously unavailable levels. Photographers normally shooting handheld at 1/250 sec can switch on IS to obtain a similarly steady and blur-free result with a shutter speed of just 1/15 second. Image blur in low light and at long telephoto lengths is significantly reduced.
Superior Image Quality
Two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements and several aspherical elements are used to suppress the effects of secondary chromatic aberrations, to obtain crisp, sharp, high-contrast images without fringing throughout the zoom range.
Super Spectra Coatings
Optimized Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping, suppress flare and ghosting. Coatings also help achieve true color balance and increase contrast for vivid hi-fidelity images.
Zoom Ring Lock Lever
The zoom ring can be locked in place at its widest focal length in order to prevent the lens from physically extending while not in use.

Having used the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens for about two years now, this is the perfect focal length range for use as a day-to-day walkabout lens on my Canon 40D. Other Canon gear that I have include their excellent EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS , their razor-sharp EF 70-200mm f/4L IS , EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DO IS , the L-grade-sharpness EF 100mm f/2.8 macro , MP-E 65mm f/2.8 macro , and MR-14EX macro ring lite.

In low light or wider-angle scenery shots, this lens is not as sharp as my 17-55mm f/2.8. When used to photograph macro-like shots of butterflies and flowers, it is not as sharp as my 100mm f/2.8. When used at its 200mm lens to focus onto distant birds and turtles sitting on a stone in a pond, it is not as sharp as my 70-200mm f/4L. But as a one-lens solution for covering that kind of focal lengths, it is pretty good. On sunny days, I use this lens on a 40D with a B&W multi-coated MRC Kaesemann Circular Polarizer. I consider this to be a very useful hiking/travel/walkabout lens. This is my first experience with a Canon lens that does not use USM, and the micro-motor is slightly slower and noisier than USM... but not knowing what to expect, I was expecting even slower focusing and, in most situations, I found its focus speed totally adequate - still very quick and without any back-and-forth hunting in lower lighting. But my main gripe about this lens is that Canon did not use USM (who knows what kind of marketing decisions went into this, much as I wondered why the 40D had a 3.0-inch LCD but kept the same 230,000 pixels as the 2.5-inch LCD on the 30D - one of my main gripes with the 40D). For the price, Canon should have included USM with full-time manual focusing. But I did notice that the price has dropped by more than 60 dollars since I bought the lens less than three weeks ago.

The use of a zoom lock switch to prevent lens creep is a very welcome addition that I always wished that their 17-85mm lens also had. The lens does not rotate during focusing, so circular polarizer filters stay in place.

Unlike Canon's USM lenses, the micro-motor focus design of this lens does not allow you to override the autofocus mechanism until you first flip the AF/MF switch on the lens. Furthermore, while the 17-85mm lens lets you use both the focus ring and zoom ring when the lens hood is inverted on the lens, on the 18-200mm lens, since the focus ring is now placed at the very front of the lens (and in front of the much-wider zoom ring), when its Canon EW78D Lens Hood (not included with the lens) is inverted, the lens hood's "petals" block most of the zoom ring and I have to use my middle finger and thumb to reach in between the hood petals to rotate the focus ring when the hood is screwed on in its inverted position. I would have much preferred that Canon retain the same focus-ring-closer-to-camera-body design that they used on the 17-85mm. But since I mainly use manual focus on my two 65mm and 100mm macro lenses, this is not that big of a deal for me.

At both 18mm and 200mm wide open, the image corners can be a little on the soft side, but when stopped down between f/5.6 and f/11, the image is sharp from edge to edge. But even Canon's 28-300mm L glass, which is also f/3.5-5.6, has its share of design compromises and sharpness issues in a superzoom lens design. So I think that any lens encompassing this sort of zoom range will be tripping over the physical limitations of what can be achieved when compared with a lens with a smaller zoom range. A 18-200mm lens at a fixed f/2.8 with USM and L-grade glass and weather sealing in a lens that weighs less than 3 pounds would be wonderful, and I would gladly pay a lot more for it as single-lens travel/walkabout lens solution, but that product still only exists in my dreams right now.

This 18-200mm lens will now make my 17-85mm lens the least-used lens that I have, so I may eventually end up selling the 17-85mm lens.

I have used this lens on three holidays. Two to outback Australia and one to Italy. It is very convenient to have such a range without having to change lenses. But the compromise is quality and colour. I owned an EFS-17-85 with my 30D and I got this with my 50D. I have decided to go back to using my 17-85 - it's a better lens. I have just taken some shots of a couple of subjects with both lenses and the 18-200 put a yellow colour cast on the photo.

Comments about Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens:

This is the lens I use for client or personal use and I only want to bring my APS-C Canon 50D. An older camera for sure. But also regarded as the last true pro-am X0D cameras. For possibly any APS-C Canon cameras, this can be a lens you can use for many occasions.

Two things I like most about this lens: Color IQ and focal length range. Images are clean and vibrant. I can use this lens in a pinch for any paid client work. The only time I would be even slightly concerned is to do head shots with it. You might have to sharpen the image in post. But that would be a very minor item.

With the focal length, this is really an event lens where you may not be able to move about. Or you can/want bring only one camera and lens and need versatility. You can do some great, big group shots in tight spaces as well as photographing a staged performance while in the audience. At 50' from a stage, you can get good head shots with the equivalent 300mm on the long end. I feel the AF motor is quite fast as well.

Other positives. Though the lens wobbles a bit, it doesn't affect quality and the plastics feel durable. Just as durable as the Canon 24-105mm f4L. Very lightweight. IS really does make a difference at slower shutter speeds.

For a versatile APS-C lens, it doesn't get much better than this. But there are definitely trade-offs with a big focal range. Sharpness isn't spectacular at the long end. Resolution falls off quite a bit but still very useable. Crazy lens-creep. If this lens is attached and your camera is pointing down, the lens completely moves. This doesn't bother me as because the camera is only pointing down when I'm taking a break. f4 across the focal range would be AMAZING... But f5.6 has been adequate at the long end. Even though the lens-wobble and lens-creep doesn't introduce any image issues, it should be fixed.

For APS-C only, it's tough to beat this lens. The only other alternative I would consider would be the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8. It's sharpness and color contrast is superior. But you lose a ton of range and it's at least double in weight. It WILL tire your hand and arm on a full day of shooting.

Because of the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, I know I will use APS-C for a long time. Improve the positives and remove some of the negatives and you'd have a more pro-like lens.

Comments about Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens:

I am a high school photography teacher and yearbook adviser, so I take over 40,000 photos a year. I use this lens with my 70D. I was hesitant to buy it because I thought the image quality would suffer with such a wide variable range 18mm-200mm. I was wrong. I love the quality at all focal lengths. Yes the lens is heavy, but I don't care. It beats having to remove and change lens when I don't have time. My new favorite lens for any situation.

I purchased this lens to go with my new Canon 70D camera. I have a number of other lenses like the 24-105 and the 28-135. I wanted this new lens to give me more reach than a 135 could provide. So far I am impressed with this lens and I recommend as a good walk around lens.

I owned a 17-85mm lens. There were two upcoming vacations that I wanted a lens with a greater capacity. This was it!! 18-200mm covers everything I could want. The 18-200mm is only slightly heavier; well worth it. The pictures are fantastic. Don't know why I waited so long to purchase it.

I bought this camera because I was tired of lugging 2 or 3 lenses with me everywhere I went. I like that I can now use one lens for everything up to 200mm. I still carry a higher zoom on the occasion I may want to use it, but for most occasions this one is perfect.

I mostly take family pics and this lens enables me to take better videos and pictures especially during school functions, when getting a front seat is not always possible. The lens is understandably heavier than my prev Canon 18-55mm one, though. But definitely something I can handle and get used to! Really enjoy the zoom capability and the quality of pictures

Comments about Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens:

I love this lens when I don't want to deal with multiple lenses and changing them all of the time. It is so versatile and works in almost any situation.

It is fairly durable. I recently dropped it from the top of my tripod (over five feet) and it only suffered a slight crack on the edge of the filter adapter. Still works great!

Comments about Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens:

The best camera and lens are the camera and lens that with you when you need to take a picture. This lens may not be the best lens ever made by Canon, but it has a very special place in my heart. Whenever I go out with my wife and daughter, especially when heading to a new location, I will bring this lens with me instead of my EF 40mm or my EF-S 60mm. This lens is the reason why I have not bought a 70-200mm lens yet.

This is because I don't want to be swapping lens or miss a shot because 70mm is too long. Some of the shots of my daughter are the "get it now or forget about it" shots. For this type of shooting, the 18-200mm range is perfect.

Very versatile, great quality for the price, feels very robust. A little heavy makes it difficult to tale too many shots in sequence, but not an issue. Great product.

Comments about Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens:

This is a big macro lens. It comes with a tripod collar which makes it balance very well. It is solidly built. I use manual focus and it focuses very well. The images are sharp. It has the perspective and depth of field found in a long macro. I like this but it may not suit everyone.
It is my go to macro but takes a lot of room in the bag.
