The 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens is a professional-grade, bright zoom lens specifically designed for the Sony Alpha SLR series (also compatible with Minolta Maxxum series) DSLR cameras. Carl Zeiss' optical design and anti-flare T* (T-Star) coatings used for this lens help to reduce flare and to increase contrast, in addition to the aspherical, extra-low dispersion, and super extra-low dispersion glass elements.

When used with a digital SLR camera with an APS-C sized sensor, the equivalent 35mm focal length for this lens becomes 24-52.5mm. With its wide angle zoom range and its constant aperture of f/2.8, in conjunction with the Super SteadyShot image stabilization system of the Sony Alpha DSLR camera system, this lens will provide excellent results even when hand-holding the camera with available light.

Aperture Range: f/2.8-22
With f/2.8 throughout the zoom range, up to a maximum of f/22, the high quality of this lens means you don't have to sacrifice aperture for higher focal lengths as some lenses do when zooming in.
Optimized For APS-C Size / Alpha & Minolta Maxxum DSLRs
Optimized for Sony Alpha APS-C size cameras, the lens covers a 2.2x zoom range from 16mm to 35mm, which is the 35mm equivalent of a 24-52.5mm lens.
3x Aspheric Glass Lens Elements
To reduce chromatic aberrations, most noticeable when zoomed all the way in, the extra-low dispersion glass corrects for certain wavelengths of light - producing sharper images with truer colors.
Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) & Super Extra-Low Dispersion (Super ED) Glass Elements
These precision lens elements correct distortion for sharper, more visually accurate images across the entire zoom range of the lens.
Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM)
Designed for fast, smooth, silent automatic focusing, this unique technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. It operates through the ability of a piezoelectric device to reshape itself quickly when voltage is applied.
Carl Zeiss T* (T-Star) Coatings
Coated optics were pioneered by Carl Zeiss...and this superb lens features T* (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates the lens flare, internal reflection and light scattering that can otherwise occur at glass-to-air surfaces.
9x Circular Aperture Blades
Circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded bokeh background effects when capturing spot-light sources in your pictures. Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
Focus Hold Button
This lens is made with a Focus Mode switch and Focus Hold button, which offer better focus control whenever you need it. For reliable operation, Auto Clutch prevents the manual focus ring from rotating in auto-focus mode.

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

Picked up this and the 2470z around the same time and have put both through there paces. This lens is incomparable. the 16mm wide angle is more then adequate for any object or landscape shot you can think of. The quality and build is spot on with a fantastic elimination of chromatic aberration on even the most prone edges.

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

Superb build, optical quallity is amazing the colors and sharpness are well to be expected, and super super fast, and on top of that you cannot hear this lens. Simply amazing, on the down side my main purpose for this lense is landscapes and therefore filters are a necessity.. The vignetting on this lense when filters are stacked is not acceptable for a lense of this magnitude, my old trusty tamron wide angle handles them better, but I will make do. Beautiful lense, beautiful pictures.

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

I have both 16-35 2.8 & 24-70 2.8 Carl Zeiss lenses that I love for their sharpness. I consider that a camera is 95% the quality of the lens. My problem with these lenses is the lens flare whenever I shoot towards a light souce (worst I have encountered). Forget the lens shade, I try to compensate with my hand, but that doesen't work as the problem persists closer to the middle of the lens. Often I don't see it until I put the image on the screen and then it is glaring. Often, I can compensate with editing, but this is tedious. Is there a solution to this problem? I love my Sony A77 and the crispness of the Zeiss lenses but am frustrated by the flare.

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

I am using the lens mainly for indoor use, and I am impressed by the overall quality. According to reviews there are some flaws regarding this lens. This might be true in a laboratory measurement situation, but to me this is not the experience in real life photography. Both sharpness and contrast is really astonishing, and very similar to the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm.
Not so great: The size is maybe something that could be discussed. However,as the lens produces such a great result, I could accept this disadvantage.

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

This lens is great with the A900. The balance is perfect with or without a battery grip. Focusing is spot on, zoom is smooth, photos are exceptional. Had the A700 with 16-80mm Zeiss, and although that was a great pair, the A900 and this lens (or the Zeiss 24-70mm) is just that much better. Sold the A700 and don't see me changing up anytime soon (although I still miss the A700 as I hate to part with quality items). All I could ask for in a lens, as is the A900 for a camera body. The Zeiss line is worth it if you shoot frequently and want to enjoy professional results. Happy capturing!

Lens is nicely constructed and zooms without extension, unlike the 24-70f2.8z and it's also lighter than the 24-70f2.8z, although the 16-35f2.8z is about the same length. Appears to be about as sharp at 24mm as the 24-70f2.8z. Also similar to the Sony 20f2.8 when set at 20 mm. I can reccommend the 16-35f2.8z, but I couldn't pay any more for it.

Far superior to Sigma in image sharpness, brightness and color.
Some flare, but if you shoot tethered, it can be detected immediately.

This is a wonderful lens. It is perfectly balanced with my A900 and provides quick, quiet and accurate performance making it a pleasure to use. I've used this lens along the rocky coasts of Okinawa, the humid swamps of Florida, the icy cold of winter in the Utah canyons and other extremes of environment and it performed flawlessly. I thought the weight would be an issue, and then I saw my pictures and decided the weight was a minuscule issue compared to the quality of the images I bring home. If you're serious about landscape or interior photography then this is a must have lens.

I use this lens as my everyday lens. I connected it to my Sony A-900 and have not taken it off the camera yet. Its a big piece of equipment. Heavy too. Hook this lens to a large frame camera like the A-900, do a day at the zoo or a photo shoot , and your going to feel it at the end of the day. I needed a lens that would enable the full capacity of the A-900. It is really a great lens. Its expensive , so shop around. I have had the lens for a month or so. I have taken great images with it and some not so great. I am one of those who believe that its not so much the equipment as is the user of the equipment that makes for a great capture. So the bottom line ? If you can afford it , go for it. If not now, just figure the price, as it always does, will come down when Sony presents their next big money maker.

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

Bought it just prior to a trip overseas. So I broke it in as I was shooting instead of just playing with it. I found that that the close up focusing was pretty good, only about a foot. The shots came out great and excellently sharp. I would caution folks that the field of focus is extremely narrow and I had to hunt to find the right depth of field. when I did, the image was great. still more to learn about using this lens

Great for scenic shots, indoor close quarters, etc. There is a little distortion toward the edges when at 16mm. Works well on my A850 and A900.

                      Very bright!

The zoom is not silent. Not sure if this important as the lens is brand new.

I don't actually dont own this lens, but I did try it out at the Sony Style Store. This is a massive lens; diameter is 77mm and weights a lot more than the standard kit lens. Because the lens diameter is so big, it makes me worried if it will create a shadow when the pop-up flash is up (Just a thought that you might want to check out before purchasing).

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

Great wide angle lens. Is indeed a heavy lens. Would prefer an f4 version that could weigh a bit less. Nonetheless, no vignetting seen anywhere, sharp, sharp, sharp, great colors and contrasts.

4 stars due to a tiny bit of slop at mount with my A850. A touch (less than 2mm) of rotational movement on the mount that does not effect image quality whatsoever. Would be nice, for the price, to have a better fit though.

                      Great lens optically!

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

                        Excellent corner-to-corner sharpness and contrast.
Geometric distortion is well controlled for a lens of this type.

When used with the Sony Alpha 900 body you can zoom out, correct architectural verticals, expose, and then crop the finished image while retaining fine details.

Besides enhancing skies, foliage and waterways for scenics the Kaesemann Circular Polarizing Filter does a superb job, when mounted on this lens, in controlling window reflections and mid-day color desaturation on architectural buildings.

Oh my goodness. This is a great lens. A wonderful lens. What can I say? Seriously. It snaps into crystal clear focus so quickly and silently you don't even know its done it, and takes pictures so sharp and clear you won't believe it. Bokeh is rich and buttery, and when you zoom down to the details in post, you're not going to believe your eyes. "Where are the chromatic abberations I expected? Where is the haloing?" you'll ask yourself in disbelief. Then, you'll smile and pat yourself on the back for buying such a fantastic lens.

Picked up this and the 2470z around the same time and have put both through there paces. This lens is incomparable. the 16mm wide angle is more then adequate for any object or landscape shot you can think of. The quality and build is spot on with a fantastic elimination of chromatic aberration on even the most prone edges.

I got some great landscape shots the first time I used this lens. No vigneting, even with a polorizing filter. The focus is extrordinary.

I'm certian I will be using this lens more than any other lens.

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

Comments about Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Wide-Angle Zoom Lens:

Very fast lens. I know some of the other reviews say its heavy....yea, but that's what you get when you buy a great lens. It's not made of plastic. We are slowly upgrading all of our lenses to the Sony Zeiss line. They are worth the price.
