The 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G Alpha A-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens from Sony is a 5.7x super telephoto lens, specifically designed for the Sony Alpha SLR series. When mounted to cropped Sony APS-C format Alpha DSLRs, its focal length becomes the 35mm equivalent of a 105-600mm super telephoto zoom lens.

As part of the G series of high quality lenses, the SAL-70400G is designed to deliver extremely sharp performance across its wide focal length range, and it features a high-speed SSM (SuperSonic-Wave Motor) for autofocus speed and precision. The focus-mode/range switch and three focus-hold buttons provide enhanced operability. And when used with the Alpha 900 SLR camera, the AF hold buttons can be customized to activate the intelligent preview function.

Aperture Range: f/4.0-32
In addition to the zoom range, the aperture varies along with the focal length as well, from f/2.8 to f/32.
For Alpha & Minolta Maxxum DSLRs
Designed with full-frame and APS-C sized sensors in mind, it is compatible with any of the Sony Alpha or Minolta Maxxum series DSLR cameras.
2x Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) Glass Elements
The lens is built with two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements, which improves image quality by reducing color aberrations, as well as providing improved contrast and greater sharpness throughout the frame.
Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM)
Designed for fast, smooth, silent automatic focusing, this unique technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. It operates through the ability of a piezoelectric device to reshape itself quickly when voltage is applied.
Minimum Focus Distance: 3.9'
At 3.9' the minimum focusing distance of the lens makes it possible to move in for very close-up shots.
9x Blade Circular Aperture
Circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded "bokeh" background effects when capturing spot-light sources in your pictures. Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing out of focus effect.
Teleconverter Compatible
Compatible with optional Sony 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, which extend the focal length of the lens. Teleconverters are compatible with manual focus only, however.
Focus Range Switch
Used when you need the quickest possible autofocus response within a certain focal range, the lens will only autofocus within the set range eliminating AF at focal lengths outside.

I purchased this lens to take photographs of a car race some friends were driving in. The focal length range I figured would be perfect (this did indeed prove to be the case).

First impression; this lens is big. The box that it comes in would hold all three of my other lenses. It is also a heavy lens. This is most likely due to the large amounts of metal that make up the build of the housing. Most of this weight is kept close to the camera where the added strength is most needed. It comes with a tripod mounting collar that, with my a700 attached, creates a perfect balance point. It will quite stably rest on this one foot on any flat level surface.

At the race, I shot for three straight days, handheld the whole time, and I will say, 3.3 lbs never felt so heavy. But honestly, I got used to it after the first day. Most of my time not shooting I spent cradling my camera with lens attached in my arm like a baby. This was because it was way too much weight to let hang off my neck, but more importantly, I didn't want that much weight hanging off the camera's mounting ring.

Enough about the weight. I don't want to give the impression that the weight is a bad thing. It isn't. It is simply an indication of the professional build quality, but also something to be aware of. I will attempt to keep the rest brief.

The silver color gets attention. The front extends when you zoom, almost doubling the length. This also gets attention. The zoom collar is stiff but smooth. There was no zoom creep but also no jerky movement. The lens hood has a little door on it so you can access rotatable filters (nice touch).

This is the second sharpest lens I own. This probably means little to you as you do not know what lenses I own. Let's just say it's second after a 70mm macro and before a 17-50 f/2.8. In fact, I noticed prime quality sharpness all the way up to 300mm. After that it looses some clarity, especially if you are shooting something far away. This of course probably has much to do with the shear amount of atmosphere this lens allows you to look through.

Now for the bad news (sorry), it just didn't focus as quickly as I expected or would have liked. I missed quite a few shots because it seemed the lens couldn't figure out what it was doing. I must here admit that this is the first very long telephoto lens I have used and the first lens with any kind of internal high speed focusing motor (SSM). My expectation may be higher than is reasonable. Never the less, it was frustrating to miss some really good action shots. It did seem more pronounced at the long end and at dawn or dusk when the lighting was very flat. I plan on looking into it further to see if there may be a problem with this particular lens, or if I'm just being unreasonably picky.

    So to sum up:
Gets attention (this could be good or bad)
High build quality (this is always good)
Heavy weight (a side effect of the build quality)
Sharp focus (at least below 300mm)
Questionable focus speed (or unreasonable expectations)

This lens feels heavy and may cause a lot of my images to go soft from slight movement. I handhold almost everything, so trying to decide if this is right for me. I bought it for Africa (wildlife and surfers), but wonder if my 70-200 f/2.8 plus teleconverter would be the better choice as it's brighter, lighter, and more shots are in focus! And then there's the price...!

Comments about Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G Alpha A-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I just recently purchased this lens & love it so far. I had rented it last fall to see if I would want to purchase it. You can't find this specific one anymore because they have replaced it with a newer more expensive version. The only complaint would be the weight of this lens, but it just reminds me that it's well built. I would recommend this to anyone who can still get their hands on one!

Comments about Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G Alpha A-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I'm using this lens to take outdoor wildlife pictures.

I'm loving the image quality from this lens paired with the A99.

Focus speed is pretty good but I understand that the G2 version of this lens has faster focus. I haven't tried that lens yet but using this lens I can see how they could have sped it up. It can be a tad slow to focus sometimes but overall the focus is pretty fast and it is accurate from what I've seen so far. Use of the A99 or lens focus limiters may help speed focus up when they can be used.

I really can't wait for spring to really hit and I can get out and try this lens out more extensively but so far I am really loving this lens.

Build quality seems really good. This is a heavy lens but not too bad to handle. Brace yourself while shooting and you should be able to get some great shots at somewhat slower shutter speeds when necessary of non-moving objects. The lens hood is pretty good, a little flimsy but seems sturdy enough.

I'd say if you are looking for a lens in this focal range, definitely get this one. If you have the extra money you may want to check out the G2 with the faster focus and newer lens coating.

Excellent color and sharpness. Only used it a few times so far, for birds at the long end and flower closeups at the short. If it holds up over time, I'd up the grade to 5 stars. Seems not as heavy or clumsy as competing lenses (I used to own the Canon 70-200 4.0 and 400 5.6).

Comments about Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G Alpha A-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I am an avid nature and wildlife photographer. In my time in the field I have used both a Sigma 120 -400 and a Nikon 80-400. I was completely unsatisfied with the Nikon product but generally was willing to settle for the results I got from the Sigma product. But while at a local camera club, I got to try the Sony 70-400 G lens and that lens immediately caught my eye. I have now owned the lens for over one year. During that time it has become my "go to" lens. Last month I dropped the lens onto a concrete floor from a height of about six feet. Don't do this test! The lens took some serious repair work from Sony, but it could be repaired and that speaks volumes for how well it is constructed. Once I shipped the lens for repair, I found the lens so important to my work that I bought a second lens instead of waiting for the repairs to be completed. Bottom line - I didn't feel I could be without this lens. The good news in all of this is I no longer have to share my favorite lens with my wife and B&H had my new lens to me by noon the day after I ordered it - Thank you B&H - your service is great!

This lens is one of the sharpest lenses I have even used especially when you consider its range of focal length. I have the Sony 300 f2.8 and I prefer to use the 70-400 mm lens except in low light situations. I definitely do not feel I loose any noticeable sharpness or contrast with the 70-400 even at its 400 mm focal length.

I find the lens focuses quickly and accurately without searching. I am also very impressed how quiet it is when it focuses. I would warn anyone not familiar with a lens of this focal length that focusing must be done very carefully making sure you are focusing on what you deem important. I would also recommend using a tripod although I have been surprisingly successful hand holding this lens even at the 400 mm range. I have heard people complaining about the weight of the lens but I do not find its weight to be a problem. But then, I expect a lens of this focal length and quality to be heavy.

The zoom on the lens is a little stiff but not a problem for me.

The lens is a little pricy, but I have to say it that if you can afford it, its performance justifies its price.

Am I totally satisfied with this lens? No! Let me list a few things that could be improved or changed.

            1. The Bokeh is distinctively different. This is especially true for shots with high lights or hot spots in the background. Before you get too excited though, let me say you can almost always work around difficult situation because of the versatility of this lens. My comment should also be measured against the fact that I do a lot of my work with the Sony 85 f1.4, the 70-200 f2.8 and the 300 f2.8 lenses, all of which have unbelievable Bokeh. I certainly would not let the Bokeh of this lens effect my decision to purchase this lens because all of its positives far out weigh any Bokeh problems you might perceive.

            2. The lens hood works but it certainly is not of the quality I would expect to find on this lens. It is prone to fall off and it is very flimsy. Don't misunderstand me, it is functional and the little door which allows you to adjust a polarizing filter with the hood attached is a good and useful idea. I would just like something more sturdy as I have broken one and replacements are quite expensive.

            3. The tripod collar should be more robust. Yes, it performs its function, but again, I expected something better.

            4. The focus lock buttons can be a problem. At least they are for me. I tend to hold the lens where they are located and this locks up the focus at some of the most critical times. I have learned to grasp the lens differently but it was a learning process that has cost me some shots.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this lens. Needless to say I would buy it again as I have already done that. Why? Because I don't think any of the lens' negatives are game changers. And frankly, I have not seen anything better out there. Actually, I haven't seen anything out there that can even match the images it produces.

Comments about Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G Alpha A-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I bought this lens based on professional, objective reviews of its performance--including the conclusions that it is better than its Nikon and Canon equivalents. I have used this lens extensively with Sony A900 and A99 cameras to shoot active wildlife and rodeo action. It is light enough to easily hand-hold, which is a big advantage when roaming wildlife habitat and rodeo arenas. It focuses very fast and is quick to capture action. The results are very sharp, as sharp as I get with my prime 300mm and 600mm lenses. In a number of years of use in the field, I have not had any problems with this lens, which is much better than my friends' experiences with their Canon 100-400 zooms. In the retracted 70mm position it is very compact for a telephoto, making it easy to pack and transport.

My Zeiss 24-70 and this lens are my most used lenses.

I spent several months researching and reading reviews on this lens before I ordered it. I am a wildlife photographer specializing in birds and I could not be more please with this lens. It lets in lots of light at high shutter speeds. More so than the 100-400 Cannon I had considered and tested. I would hightly recommend this to all wildlife/action photograpers.

I have a Sony a900, and was using an in-expensive 100-300mm lens that produced a lot of chromatic fringing. After doing lots of research and reviews I settled on the SAL-70400G 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM Autofocus lens and I am very impressed. I have yet to see any fringing through the whole zoom range. A very sharp lens. It is a little heavy, but I'm sure I'll get used to that.

Comments about Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G Alpha A-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I use this lens for nature photography with my Sony A55V camera. I bought it for hummingbirds in particular and other birds and wildlife in general, including butterflies, some of which are very tiny. This lens lets me get close-ups of tiny or distant subjects.

The powerful zoom is great for close-ups and distant subjects. Auto-focus is fast and silent and I am very happy with the picture quality. Construction quality is excellent. I have no complaints, except it is heavy, but I understand that is the trade off for the high quality.

I bought a monopod to use with this lens because of it's weight, but I still find it difficult to hold it steady, and not that easy to follow moving subjects.

I will be buying a tripod with a gimbal head because I think it will support the weight and also provide stability while allowing a wide range of movement to follow rapidly moving subjects.

This lens is exceptional in build, quality and function. I use it on my new Sony Alpha 65 and haven't been happier or as excited since I started in photography decades ago. Thank you B&H!

I was suprised opening the box just how large in diameter the lens was. It's heavy, sort of, but I have no trouble cradling it when hiking and using it is suprisingly easy. Seems well balanced and not a chore to hold while composing and focusing. Results have been spectacular! Circling hawks...no problem...great detail.Very sharp lens...actually quite amazing. While purchased for "the long shot", I love it for shooting flowers, insects and other semi-macro uses. I can stand off at quite a distance and get great images of bees, hornets, butterflies etc without getting so close as to scare them off. Nice bokeh and diffused backgrounds.I'm not a professional photographer, but have many great lenses. This one is really special. The only downside is that when attached to my camera, the unit will not fit into any of my camera bags. Considering it's performance level, I can get the new bag. And, oh yes, it does draw a lot of attention...not unlike bringing Tiger Woods to a miniature Golf game.

Comments about Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G Alpha A-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I used this lens on a recent wildlife trip to Laos and Thailand. It was a very nice lens to use; not too heavy, sturdy and took some very sharp photos. I did not have a chance to try the lens out before leaving on the trip and my negatives might be my novice status with it.

The camera would sometimes start to zoom out while I was hiking with it on my black rapid strap. I don't know if there is a locking mechanism, but it was a little annoying when you are in some harsh terrain.

The twist zoom. This is a little bit difficult to deal with when the lens is under a rain hood 90% of the time

Color. Nothing to do with performance, but the finish is fairly delicate seeming.

Case. Really, that is the case provided with an expensive lens? Sheesh.
