Questions? Ask our experts:

The Vanguard 8x42 Spirit ED Binocular is their lightest roof prism model with ED glass lenses and full multicoating; the rubber armored housing comes in at an impressive ~1.3 lbs (600g), but doesn't skimp at all upon the optics.  This is the choice for someone who values low weight and high optical quality over a more metal-based housing which weighs more but can be knocked around a bit.

Unlike a hunter's binocular, Vanguard has given the Spirit multicoatings which target the green color spectrum, for enhanced nature observation.  The waterproof and fogproof Spirit has moisture-dispersing external coatings which help to shed precipitation quickly.

The 8x42 configuration is the most popular 'classic' choice for those wanting to own a single full size binocular.  Most people can comfortably hold an 8x power unit for extended periods without fatigue; many cannot easily keep a 10x binocular steady.  The 8x42 also provides a wider field of view than 10x42s, allowing an easier time of keeping fast-moving subjects in your vision.

Fully multicoated ED glass lenses with Emerald coatings to render full spectrum of color within green tones (essential for nature observation)
HydroGuard external hydrophobic coating upon objectives allows easier cleaning, dust/dirt resistance, and better observation in wet weather conditions
V-Max Silver coating upon P2 phase-coated BaK4 prisms for high reflectivity
Twist-up eyecups simplify sharing unit
Rubber-armored light weight housing
Discreet dark green finish won't startle wildlife

The Spirit ED glasses had features that more expensive ones had and with some they did not. Very pleased with the quality!

Got them for my wife for bird watching. Not to heavy but good feel. Easy for to pick-up on how to operate. Do be aware the eyepiece cover is not completely captive and could be lost.
          Good value.

Comments about Vanguard 8x42 Spirit ED Binocular:

I intend to use these for safari and birding. I read multiple reviews and visited many binocular websites to understand the pros and cons of various binoculars. For the price ($50 rebate currently in effect) these are a very good value, and I couldn't find any other binoculars with other ED glass in this price range. They are toward the low end in terms of weight for 8x42 binoculars. They are easy to focus and the eyecups are easy to use with or without glasses. There are other products out there with wider field of view, which is nice, but the combination of price, features, and optics is what brought me to buy these. So far, I'm not disappointed. If I had to nitpick, the lens caps are very cheap feeling and likely to get lost.

This is a very sturdy binocular with great optics and light weight. The focusing is precise and quick. The unit comes with two straps which can double as binocular straps. The case is well built as well. The use of ED glass and the price makes this a no-brainer purchase.

Comments about Vanguard 8x42 Spirit ED Binocular:

Plan to use for birding and safari
Excellent optics for the price -- it is almost impossible to find ED glass at this price point!
Good compromise between weight and brightness/field of view. These are among the lightest 8x42 binoculars available. More compact binocs (e.g. 8x28) will be much lighter, but not as bright and will have a narrower field of view.
The focusing is very aggressive (only 3/4 turn possible), which in theory could be a problem for fine focusing, but I've not found that to be the case.
Only negative is that the lens caps are flimsy and could easily be lost.

i got these for closer focus and easier handling than my porro-prism 10X50s, without giving up brightness. they aren't much lighter but handle much better. very sharp and just as bright. the roll-up eyecups and tight folding work well for my narrow-and-deep set eyes.
very well-built; smooth and firm in all movements,
green coating seems useless but is not distracting when using
