I bought from B&H, the Letus 35mm depth of field adapter and now I was looking for a solution to take all that weight off my hands. All of you who own a Letus know that the cameras's front gets ridiculously heavy!!! This stabilizer doesn't really stabilize, especially when you walk because of your chest will make it bounce. The device sits right on your shoulder and the weight lands on your chest. For additional security, it comes with a nice belt that goes around your cheat and shoulder which comes off instantly when you want it off. Trust me, your camera won't fall even if you take both hands off and walk (just don't do something stupid) and my setup is quite heavy. I can even drink a cup of coffee at the same time having my entire rig on me. The CS-1 was just what I was looking for. If gives me the feel as if my camera was in a tripod, allowing me to control everything as the CS-1 holds the camera for me. This is the only stabilizer out there at this price range that is absolutely perfect for using you camera with a Letus. Of course without it too.

The CS-1 comes with extra camera mounts (see item's extra pics) which you WON"T need at all. CS-1 is made of very strong plastic. Feels almost like metal. WARNING: If you got the Letus on, do NOT attempt to mount your camera's heavy front on the CS-1 with the mount extensions! These are for light and little camcorders that need to be adjusted somehow. DO NOT use any extenders because it might brake, since you will be projecting the camera forward from the CS-1's CG.

I must admit that my primary use of this product is probably not for what it was specifically designed. I bought it for use with my Canon 5Dmk11 and my Canon 7D when used for HD filming. My secondary use was with the Panasonic HVX 200 camcorder.
The main problem with the unit is its lack of adjustment for the size of the operator. I'm 6'2" and 240lbs and the CS-1 is quite snug on me. However, with the Panasonic it worked quite well giving me quite steady shots and making extended filming less tiring. One catch is that when you tilt the camera you must tilt your whole body. With a balanced shoulder rig, without the chest brace, you can rock the rig on you shoulder to tilt the camera.
My second problem with the CS-1 is the lack of any way to mount the camera lower. With the Canons I prefer to use a monitor rather than a magnifier for the rear LCD. To keep the rig balanced, the monitor needs to be close to the camera - usually just above it. When this is attempted on the CS-1 the monitor is too high.
I will, however, probably find a way of modifying the unit to my
    satisfaction.

Comments about Smith-Victor CS-1 Stabilizer for Camcorder:

I'm a professional still photographer, not a video expert, so I'm still learning video-handling skills using a Canon 5D Mark II. One obvious problem with using a DSLR camera in video mode is stabilizing the beast. Hand-holding is pretty shaky. Fluid-head tripods are great, but not very portable.

The Smith Victor CS-1 Camcorder Stabilizer is a great device for both holding and stabilizing the camera while moving freely. For my first test, I decided to attach a massive load: the 5DII with a 70-200 f/2.8 and a Zacuto viewfinder!

The 70-200 fit securely using an adapter arm included in the shipment, and the SV Stabilizer supported the load easily. My biggest problem was controlling my breathing--the chest rest transferred the rise and fall of my breathing, and the over-sized load dug a bit on my back, shoulder and chest after ten minutes.

On the other hand, I had no problem focusing, zooming and moving with the hefty rig. I was even able to go hands-free, though I did keep the camera strap safely around my neck! Later I attached a smaller lens with a different extension arm (also included in the shipment) and found the rig much more comfortable.

Despite being modular and plastic, construction of the SV Stabilizer seems rugged and reliable. It comes with the spring-loaded main section, two adapter arms, a security strap (that I never took out of the bag) and a black cinch-top storage sack. There are absolutely no instructions, but the rig is pretty self-explanatory. Unless you want to cough up $500 or more, you're not going to find a better rig than the SV Stabilizer.

UPDATE: This week I shot stills and video all day long of a huge sculpture being moved across town. I was shooting with a 16-35, 85 and 70-200. The video is surprisingly steady; it almost looks like I shot on a tripod though it was strictly run and gun. The CS-1 is very comfortable and lightweight, even with a Zacuto viewfinder and mike attached to my camera. The rugged construction worked great despite some rough handling.

Bought this for my Canon C300 and wasn't expecting a whole lot considering the price. I wss susprised by what a nice job this stabilizer does. It's not perfect (you can't breathe hard or the stabilizer will move) but it solves a lot of issues for a very reasonable price.

Comments about Smith-Victor CS-1 Stabilizer for Camcorder:

Might be a good design, but does not work for larger than average people. I adjusted it all the way out, yet it was not enough. The only way it would fit would make the camera point up at a 45 degree angle.
My wife has a large frame, and it would not work for her either.

Have been in those un-expected tight spots. Well, improvise, adapt and over come, is my motto. This is a devise for the tool kit the photographer/videographer is gets that shot when all others have failed. Steady at hand and anything helps; it's different, but that's what you want when trying to get the best shot...Just think if you were exhausted and hands were not steady, this would be a great asset.

Comments about Smith-Victor CS-1 Stabilizer for Camcorder:

I had to shoot a wedding using this stabilizer with my video camera because my tripod broke. It definately beats having to carry the camera with your hands, keeps the weight off, keeps the camera from falling off accidently, and provides a steadier picture. The only negative was the camcorder extention plate was useless because the mounting screw was too long and I could not mount my pro mini dv camera on it, the height of the screw was not adjustable. I had to use the standard still camera plate which placed the video camera too close to my body and made it difficult to see the LCD. All the other mounting screws were adjustable height EXCEPT the camcorder plate, which was the sole reason I reason I brought the stabilizer. Highly dissappointed with this oversight on the part of the manufacturer.

I'm using this product with my Nikon D300 DSLR Camera, and I can't say enough good things about it. Already several of my friends are interested and have asked for the link to the site where the product is featured.
It gives the maneuverable freedom that a tripod or monopod don't give when shooting pictures, and still it gives support for sharper images.
It also gives you the possibility of free hands, for example to be used holding binoculars, and not leaving the camera hanging heavily around your neck, causing neck and back pain.
In addition, it's light and does not add much weight to the full equipment.
I only have good things to say about this product and can recommend it strongly.

I recently purchased this from B&H to replace a remarkably similar item by Opteka (from another site). In fact, the superb design, velvet bag, accessories and clear plastic are EXACTLY the same. The only thing different is the logo and price, leaving little doubt that both are from the same manufacturer. So what's the problem? The Opteka fell apart like it was made of play-doh. The mounting platform extender broke off, and the base mounting screw literally crumbled when I overtightened. Granted I have a heavier Sony EX1, but I have never seen anything like it. I refuse to give up on this wonderful concept but I would urge caution to anyone who owns one to be careful, and I would advise that people who have not yet invested to hold off for more reviews. PS-- I'd buy an all-metal one for $250 in a heartbeat.

I use it with a Sony FX7. I have a smashed wrist and the CS-1 has enabled me to meet some of my commercial obligations. A life-saver!

Where I live, I don't have the chance to try out all the competing shoulder mounts for my Sony EX-1R. Looking at the design, I thought it might be the best solution for the way I operate. I guessed right. It is light-weight and adjustable for using both the LCD and the viewfinder. It is easy to set up to do waist level shots and high angle shots. I love the fact the weight is off the top of the shoulder and distributed front and back. The one weakness is the front pad will sense your breathing. Two other friends have borrowed it already and have given it positive reviews. Hard to beat for the price.

I use this to stabilize m Sony FX1000. Overall, it is very comfortable and gets the job done. I discovered that you don't need to use the attachments it comes with. It winds up slipping if you do. I was skeptical about its plastic construction but it seems to be sturdy enough. Just don't ticheten anything too much or put too much weight on it.

I have to open it up as far as it goes to fit comfortably and have it parallel to the ground. Also, for me, it tends to lean the camera to the right so you really need to keep your arm involved with the balancing.

Comments about Smith-Victor CS-1 Stabilizer for Camcorder:

Unlike many more expensive braces that only sit on top of the shoulder, this camera brace reaches the back of the shoulder and the chest. It effectively rests all the weight of the camera on your body. Therefore arms do not become fatigued from holding the camera and they are free to work controls.
It easily carries my Panasonic HVX 200A.
Extra brackets enable me to position the camera to use the eyepiece or flip out screen. However the mount screw is a little too long so I need a rubber pad as a spacer.
Although it's mostly plastic, it's very strong and solid.
                                It works great!

Comments about Smith-Victor CS-1 Stabilizer for Camcorder:
