Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Canon DSLR Cameras

Product Highlights
  • Di II Technology
  • Micro Motor for Auto Focusing (AF)
  • Lightweight and Compact
  • Aspherical Lens Elements

The Tamron SP AF10-24mm f/3.5 -4.5 Di II is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens. Di II means that is designed for exclusive use on digital SLR cameras with smaller-size imagers (APS-C/DX). Boasting a focal length range of 10 - 24mm, (the 35mm equivalent of 16mm to 37mm) this lens has a varied range of applications for creating dramatic images as it features both ultra-wide and semi-wide angle settings.

The close focusing capability of this lens enables image capture with an exaggerated perspective at the 10mm ultra wide-angle end or with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 at the 24mm semi-wide-angle. It has Micro Motor to ensure precise and smooth auto focusing.

Note! Tamron SP AF10-24mm f/3.5 -4.5 Di II is not designed for conventional cameras or digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm

Captures Ideal Range of Focal Lengths With D-SLRs
Since the size of 35mm film format is larger than the image sensor generally used in D-SLRs, a digital camera captures a narrower angle of view than a 35mm film camera even at the same focal length settings. This lens, made exclusively for digital SLR cameras, provides ideal focal lengths to cover the range desired by DSLR shooters.
Fits Smaller-Size Imagers
This lens is designed so the size of the lens' image circle matches that of smaller-size image sensors. In the compact design, it is almost comparable to a lens offering the same angles of view in 35mm film format. 1
Aspherical Lens Elements
The optical system within this zoom lens uses three large-aperture glass-molded aspherical lenses, as well as three hybrid aspherical lenses, which minimize spherical aberrations, coma, and distortion.
Minimum Focusing Distance Across Zoom Range
The close focusing capability of this lens enables the capturing images with an exaggerated perspective at the 10mm ultra wide-angle end or shoot with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 at the 24mm semi-wide-angle setting with the freedom to create close-ups at the minimum focusing distance of 0.24m throughout the zoom range.

I've recieved and have been testing this lens for over a week now and eventhough these are my first impressions I'm pretty sure it will help anyone make a decision whether or not to buy it.

I own a Canon7D and even having a 17mm-55mm lens (which is pretty wide already), the 10mm just pushes the possibilities even further. I know that the main doubt on this lens is choosing among brands and I made up my mind because of the overall specs and the price! Over the Sigma, which I had a better brand impressions, main issue was the extra f-stop on the aperture. When comparing to Canon's 10-22, the much higher price didn't seem to make a difference in practice (same aperture limitations, no lens hood and 2mm less on the long end). But if money wasn't an issue I'd definately go for the Canon because I own another 3 different canon lenses and am very pleased with them all, so if it wasn't for price I wouldn't change brands.

Well, that everyone knows cause it's written on the lenses descriptions. Now let's talk about what really matters, the lens itself!

    Construction
It's well built and feels very solid. It's lighter than I thought. Focus is precise, reasonably fast and silent. Only downside is that focus ring rotates while focusing (but not front elements so you won't have problems when using a circular polarizing filter). After practicing a little and getting the right grip, the rotating ring won't bother as much, still a small issue though...

    Picture quality
It's excellent! I really hate some reviews that are done by scientists/optics engineers and show CA and distortion graphs that make this lens look "bad". Everything on this lens is very well controlled and is as much as you may expect on a mid range price lens, it will never be a L series (which aren't perfect neither).

All the issues regarding quality (distortion, CA, vigneting, etc...) is well controlled and acceptable. With the correct settings on camera and sometimes a little post editing you will never have any problems in getting outstanding results and professional looking pictures, afterall photography has never been about perfection, it's about language and expression and with this lens you can sure achieve that!

Hope to have helped anyone in trouble deciding.

best wishes and good clicks to you all!

I am a real estate photographer, so I need to have the ultra wide range. About a month after getting this lens, my Canon Rebel XSi started to display an error 001 message saying that the lens and camera were not communicating and suggested I clean the lens contacts. I used this as a dedicated lens on my camera body and I do not shoot in extreme conditions, so I knew they were clean. However, I cleaned them anyway, with the same result. I contacted Tamron and they seemed to almost finish my sentences when describing the issue. They said it was something simple and I could send it to them to be repaired.

The lens itself is of decent quality. The glass in mine was fairly sharp, even out to the edges. I found the auto focus motor sounded very whiney and the Af/MF switch a bit cheap feeling.

I had jobs to fulfill however, and so I ordered the Canon 10-22 as I would not have my Tamron back for a few weeks. Let me say WOW! If I thought the Tamron was good, this Canon lens has me speechless. The build quality of the lens is excellent. The auto focus speed is great. Even in auto focus mode, you can manually make fine adjustments just by turning the focus ring. Nice. And the glass...WOW! This is tack sharp...right out to the edges! As in all ultra-wides there is some pincushion distortion and vignetting at the extreme corners, which is easily corrected in Photoshop. That is not a flaw as ALL ultra wides have these characteristics.

I know it is hard to choke down the additional $ for the Canon lens, but you get a much better lens for the extra $. That being said, the Tamron is still a very good lens, but I will be using it as a backup in case something happens to my Canon.

I took off 2 stars because of the problem I had with my lens failing so soon, and I took an additional star off when I got my Canon 10-22 and relized that the Tamron was not in the same class.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Canon DSLR Cameras:

I recently purchased this 10-24mm Tamron lens from B&H to complement my 18-270mm Tamron. My first use was on a 4-day visit to San Antonio, TX. I was very pleased with the sharpness both indoors and outdoors. It was a great lens for shooting the interiors and exteriors of the Spanish missions in San Antonio as well as other sites. It performed well in low light situations, including some exquisite shots from the top of the Tower of the Americas at sunset. I consider the 10-24mm Tamron to be a really great buy for the advanced amateur photographer.

Bought this wideangle lens for my Canon 7D. It produces sharp images and super-wide angle shots that I am unable to get with my other lenses. Perfect for indoors in tight areas as well as outdoors for landscapes. Very happy with the sharpness and colors. Definitely would recommend this lens to anyone looking for an inexpensive addition to their collection. It's my new favorite!

This is a great lens for indoor shots like parties where a 24 is just not quite wide enough. It works well for night shots like star trails/Milky Way too. At 10, it is wide with little fish eye effect. This is a fun lens to use. Focus is quiet and seems fast. If you're wanting an economical wide lens, you won't be disappointed in this lens at all. You certainly won't regret purchasing it.

I did not buy this lens hastily. I talked with friends more knowledgeable than myself on lenses, plus I did a fair amount of independent study. Other than the Canon lens, this one seemed to be the best quality wide angle lens to fit my needs. Also, I found the B&H price and service to be the best route for my purchase. I have only been able to use the lens one time (took approx. 150 photos) and it performed very well. Thumbs up on both Tamron and B&H

I am by no means a photog, but I wanted some versatility in my camera equipment as the stock lens that came with my Canon SLR just does not quite give me the capability I want in tight spaces, as happens quite a bit here in Europe where I am stationed. Case in point being in a town square in Bruges Belgium and not being able to get far enough back to get the whole cathedral in the shot. I did some research and I came across this lens which for the price seems to be a bit more capable then some of its higher price competitors. Since receiving the lens it take pretty good pictures as according to me, but sometimes the color seems to be a bit off, but then that may just a fix for some type of filter. I would have rated this lens higher but even after researching this lens; upon receiving it I discovered it was Chinese made. I didn't recall seeing this on the website for Tamron, a Japanese company or B&H's website. I could have missed it though.

This lens is nice for the price. If you need a reasonably priced wide angle lens then this is for you. However, if you need studio quality the this is not the lens to buy.

My wife & I recently went to Smokey Mountains on 39th wedding anniversity. Lense is exceptionally clear. light weight, and great for those wide angle shots of nature and sceenery from the tops of old smokie. I used it extensively in Cades Cove and it really caught the grand splender of that lost valley. I saw nothing that I was not pleased with. It performed flawlessly giving me some of the greatest shots of our trip.

Great lens. use it for shooting stills and videos around our church campus. only downside to the lens is the apperture, its not a constant. its a very wide lens, but not to fish eyed. noisy if you use it with on camera audio, you can hear the stops for zoom and focus. overall, great fun lens.

I put this lens through all the tests I could. Low light, bright light, starry skies, moving targets, video, 2" macro, and a self-portrait at 10mm, from 3", that made my head look like a sausage. The pictures were sharp and color very good. It is a fun lens to play with and will produce great portraits with the proper light and camera settings. You can play with the ISO, aperture, and shutter speed to get the picture you want. When shooting in low light a tri-pod or very steady hand are needed. When set at 10mm, camera stability is essential if you want to enlarge your pictures over 100%. Close up focusing through the LCD screen, in low light, seems to give you a sharper picture and better color than using the viewfinder. This is most likely due to the fact that there is a central focal point as opposed to the nine you get through the viewfinder. On some close ups, turning off the auto-focus, will allow you to get closer to your subject; otherwise, the camera won't take the picture.

I liked this lens right out of the box. It fit smoothly onto my camera, felt solid to the touch and the first photos were amazing. This is a very worthwhile investment for someone looking for wide tele on a c camera body at a reasonble price. I read reviews and ythen made my own judgement. I like the photos with this lens. I do earn some of my living with my camerasm and this will extend the range of my photo=taking possibilities,
