Product Highlights

  • Di II Technology
  • Micro Motor for Auto Focusing (AF)
  • Lightweight and Compact
  • Aspherical Lens Elements

The Tamron SP AF10-24mm f/3.5 -4.5 Di II is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens. Di II means that is designed for exclusive use on digital SLR cameras with smaller-size imagers (APS-C/DX). Boasting a focal length range of 10 - 24mm, (the 35mm equivalent of 16mm to 37mm) this lens has a varied range of applications for creating dramatic images as it features both ultra-wide and semi-wide angle settings.

The close focusing capability of this lens enables image capture with an exaggerated perspective at the 10mm ultra wide-angle end or with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 at the 24mm semi-wide-angle. It has Micro Motor to ensure precise and smooth auto focusing.

Note: Tamron SP AF10-24mm f/3.5 -4.5 Di II is not designed for conventional cameras or digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm

Captures Ideal Range of Focal Lengths With D-SLRs
Since the size of 35mm film format is larger than the image sensor generally used in D-SLRs, a digital camera captures a narrower angle of view than a 35mm film camera even at the same focal length settings. This lens, made exclusively for digital SLR cameras, provides ideal focal lengths to cover the range desired by DSLR shooters.
Fits Smaller-Size Imagers
This lens is designed so the size of the lens' image circle matches that of smaller-size image sensors. In the compact design, it is almost comparable to a lens offering the same angles of view in 35mm film format. 1
Aspherical Lens Elements
The optical system within this zoom lens uses three large-aperture glass-molded aspherical lenses, as well as three hybrid aspherical lenses, which minimize spherical aberrations, coma, and distortion.
Minimum Focusing Distance Across Zoom Range
The close focusing capability of this lens enables the capturing images with an exaggerated perspective at the 10mm ultra wide-angle end or shoot with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 at the 24mm semi-wide-angle setting with the freedom to create close-ups at the minimum focusing distance of 0.24m throughout the zoom range.

I favor wide angle lens over other lens because of the types of shooting I do. And I use a crop sensor D3200. This wide angle zoom is great for indoors, landscapes, night, and walk around street photography. It covers one of the largest ranges of all wide angle zoom lens'. With a crop sensor camera the Tamron 10-24mm covers ranges, similar to a 14mm-35mm on a full frame. At 10mm zoom there is a lot of distortion; objects near the edges are stretch. However, it does not have the barrel effect like a fisheye. At 14mm zoom to 24mm zoom distortion is not noticeable. Also, auto focus is not that important if you shoot landscape or night, because of the huge depth of field and close distance infinity of this lens. I mostly use the manual focus, and turn the AF ring to the infinity stop. Also, from the reviews I see all over the net, this is known to be a good DSLR video lens.

Another great thing is the ZOOM ability. I can make fast adjustments to go super wide 10mm with distortion, to 16mm to 24mm angle without distortion, and not need to change lens. This zoom lens covers a large wide angle range.

On the down side, the gears for auto focus (AF) can be damaged if you're holding the lens on the focus ring and the camera starts trying to AF. The focus ring is fixed to gears in the lens. That is good if you do a lot of manual focusing: you use the infinity stop without looking through the viewfinder. But, it is bad if you do a lot of auto focusing at close range and put on-going resistance on the AF ring a lot.

Another down side it the huge distortion at 10mm to 13mm. But then again that is within fisheye range, and it is to be expected. But, post processing can fix a lot of the distortion. And, distortion can be beneficial if you have creative composition skills.

Overall, I like this lens a lot. I would have given it 5 stars, but the possibility of the AF breaking has me worried. As for sharpness and colors, it will never exceed or meet the ability of prime lenses. But for a wide angle zoom, it does a great job, not a superior job, but a great job for a lot less than other wide angle zoom. It's like having a wide angle and a 35mm all in one.

As every good consumer in this economy does, I did my homework and research to find the best wide angle lens that also incorporated reasonable pricing. The result was my purchase of the Tamron 10-24 DI II.
This lens is not touted specifically as a "pro" lens, and on the contrary some say it is geared more toward amateur, but all things being equal, I decided to try it. Taking it out on the NYC streets for a test run, focus seems to be a bit of an issue, and I noticed it does well focusing in daylight/ sunlight, while it tends to struggle in lower light situations. I found myself trying to compensate in low light by "tricking" it into focal submission wherever possible, and finally having to switch at times to manual. I noticed this same issue with my Tamron 18-270.
There is some softness at the edges and barreling when opened up to 10mm, but nothing that makes me discount it as a better than average wide-angle lens, which would be my overall analysis. The internal motor for the focus is quick, albeit somewhat inconsistant, but the lens accomplished the type of landscape-tall-building-long-street shots I wanted to get. And you can't beat the price.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

I started doing real estate photography. The outfit I work with requires that I be able to shoot with a 10mm focal length. Based on the available products and features, the choice came down to two, Nikkor or Tamron. I chose the Tamron mostly for price as the Nikkor was significantly more expensive. So far I have no regrets about my choice.

The lens is small and light. It also passes my most important test, it does what it is supposed to! My regular go to lens is a Nikkor 28-300. I thought how much more can I get with the extra 14mm? The simple answer A LOT! At 10 mm, the Tamron's field of view is a full thirty five degrees greater. How much of a difference it makes became very clear the first time i used the lens.

I took a photo walk around a nearby town. Yes it took a few shots to start getting used to the characteristics of this lens. What blew me away was where I needed to be relative to my subject in order to capture the image I wanted. As an example, I decided to take a few shots of the county courthouse building. Normally I would have needed to be well out in the street in front of the building to get it all. With this lens, I had to keep moving closer to get only the courthouse I wanted (see attached photo 1).

The images I'm getting are clear and sharp. The lens works beautifully with my D7000.

The other interesting characteristic of this lens at 10mm is distortion. Having that wide a field of view definitely causes distortions. There isn't much I can do to avoid the problem as that's how the optics/physics of these lenses work. In some cases the effect creates very interesting images (see attached photo 2). In others there is a need to flatten and straighten images. Lightroom and Photoshop have plenty of tools that simplify that task.

10mm is about the shortest focal length available without going fish eye. This is clearly an ultra wide angle lens. I can't wait to use it in some big outdoor/nature shots.

Another nice thing is that this lens has a 77mm filter thread. I'm not planning on needing to use a lot of filters with it, but should I need to my existing filters are the same size.

The bottom line on this lens is that it has so far definitely been worth the money. It works well and is reliable and easy to use. I can't talk about how rugged and durable it is but expect that it will hold up for years to come.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

Having grown tired of the "standard 18mm" width, I had to break out. I was missing way too much. I really weighed the Sigma 10-20 against this Tamron and I am so glad I went Tamron 10-24. It is like falling in love with photography all over again. The hard part is taking it off and using a normal lens from time to time. Now I know what I have been missing in my quest for creative photography. Bang for the buck, this lens is clean, responsive and true! Not to mention, just plain fun. Check the pricing on the "Big Names" for this lens, for $[$]I have no cons to give you. I love it. Just watch where that sun is... it will flare by its nature.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

I got this lens primarily to open up my landscape photography field of view. I received the lens during one of the worst (weather-wise)winters I can remember and haven't ventured outside for long enough to try this lens out with landscapes yet. I have, however, found that playing with perspective shots is a whole lot of fun! This lens is well-built and feels very sturdy and operates very smoothly. Focus is nice and fast and accurate. I really like the range of this lens. It is very versatile!

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

This lens is what I keep on my camera most of the time. I find that this lens is very useful for events. I have used this lens on numerous assignments in tight places and find that I can get the shots my customers like. The 10-24mm zoom range is excellent for the type of shooting I do.
I also enjoy using this lens outdoors in landscapes, exaggerated perspective at close in 10mm is a lot of fun to experiment with. I have used this lens on thousands of images since 2009, and have had to send it in to Tamron once when the aperture mechanism failed. Tamron fixed it at no charge in less than a 5 day turn-around.
Service from Tamron, and the value this lens presents, you cannot find a better value.
Cons: The autofocus is outdated a USM would be fantastic improvement.
In manual focus, the focus ring is imprecise and not entirely smooth.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

This is an update for my past review. After shooting several thousand shots with this lens in various situations/conditions, and doing more research on it I found this lens has some of the lowest barrel distortion (2.0 percent) compared to other wide angle zooms. Also, the TTL metering is accurate in all exposure modes (Point, Matrix, Wide, Auto). And the focus ring concerns I had are now dismissed. I accidently turned it a few times while in AF mode, and no issues. Thus, I give this lens a 5 star.As for the bad: the images are soft on the wide 10mm side up to 14mm, at f/3.5 to f/5. But I fix post processing with singe file HDR. This is my favorite most used lens. 5 stars.

Not as much distortion at its widest as I expected. This lens is a great way to get introduced into the world of wide angles without breaking the bank!

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

I found on a recent trip that I wanted to photograph the interior of a ship I was on. Using only available light and the close quarters I came away with amazing shots. It will be a great lens in museums and narrow streets.
