The black Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod is part of the 055CX series which was designed to meet the needs of demanding professionals and photography enthusiasts who want the best in terms of performance and quality. It has been improved with the use of carbon fiber tubing for its legs. Thanks to innovative production techniques - which allow for high quality 100% carbon tube structures - the 055CX series guarantees a higher load capacity and an increased height with a lighter overall weight (-20%) thanks to a completely new design, which allowed to lighten the components.

The 055CXPRO4 is a 4-leg section tripod, with a center column design that allows it to be used in either vertical or horizontal position. By extending the column to its highest vertical position, the column can be swung over to horizontal without removing the head or disassembling the column itself.

The 055CXPRO4 also features several other improvements, such as an improved leg locking system, redesigned angle adjustment levers, and a leveling bubble that is incorporated into the head plate.

Transverse center column can be easily swung 90 degrees for low angle shots
Padded grips on the top sections of 2 legs make for a firm grip in cold or inclement weather
Four leg angle settings - 23,47, 66, 89° compensate for uneven terrain

I do lots of hiking and I needed a reliable, lightweight, affordable, easy to use, tripod. I was looking at the Gitzo Basalt and CF but was unsure how well the twist locks would hold up to the dirt, snow, and ice we have here in Wisconsin. I also didn't like that if something hit the basalt then it would make a loud clang. I don't want the wildlife to know I'm there.

I wanted light weight design so carbon fiber was my only option. I couldn't afford the Gitzo models that compared to the 055cxpro 4. It is loaded with features that are practical and work. Manfrotto did an incredible job at making this tripod easy to use. The leg angles adjust easier that my previous model by leaps and bounds. I really like the quick horizontal feature, I have a similar feature on my 3001BPro but I never used it because it just took to long to do.

The only complaint I have is that it is a little jerky when adjusting the length of the legs. Not so much that I get irritated but I notice it once in a while. I would guess it comes from the carbon fiber friction. Really a small observation than a deciding factor.

For those who are unsure about the leg lock design. I had them covered in snow and ice and with gloves on, I could easily unlock it, break the ice and adjust it.

I get obsessive when researching something and I'm glad I did because this is one of the best purchases I've made. Together with the Acratech GV2 ballhead this is the perfect tripod for me. I asked a pro photographer what he uses and said I wouldn't be unhappy with the Manfrotto 055cxpro 4, he's used Manfrotto for years.

This tripod is definitely light weight, but some features could be improved. The leg release buttons are hard to press, and once pressed, the legs are not very easy to adjust. This should be a more fluid process, in my humble opinion. Also, the ability to make the center column swing out horizontally seems pointless. This is not proper substitution to ground level shots. [...] I returned this tripod for a better model.

    Love this Tripod

    By Whitwitt

Comments about Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This tripod is sturdy, light, and perfect for any occasion. I love the knobs on the side but it takes some getting used to so make sure you practice a couple times before going on assignment. One thing I don't like about the tripod is taking vertical shots. Let's say I'm up close to a large tree and I want the camera vertical, there's no knob to tilt the camera up. I have to shorten the legs of the tripod in the back in order to do that. Horizontally there is knob but not vertically.

Comments about Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

My Slik aluminium tripod of 20+ years broke so I had an excuse to upgrade to this one. Love it's flexibility for being able to fit into awkward positions doing landscape photography while keeping the tripod balanced and stable. I bought the Manfrotto 054 magnesium ball head to go with this and it makes a great combination. Combined they are a bit heavy (would like "lighter than air") but still lighter than the old Slik set up.

Comments about Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Already have the 055CXPRO3 with a ball head and Arca QR bracket. Picked up a Wimberley WH-200 and needed another Tripod so I didn't have to switch heads. Decided on the 055CXPRO4 because I've been very happy with the PRO3, but wanted a bit shorter package when collapsed du to the size of the Wimberley head. This set of legs has not disapointed. Very stiff and secure with a D4S and 80-200 lens. I would not hesitate to purchase again.

It may be marginally heavier than a Gitzo but the price is 1/2. For this height and sturdiness i believe this is a very reasonable price for this tripod.

Comments about Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Just about everything has been covered in reviews of this excellent tripod, but little mention has been made about its maximum useable weight capability. I'm using mine with an Acratech LLH 1160 (long lens head), and the combination can easily handle my Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS II. I'm not adventurous enough to say that that capability extends to adding a 1.4x teleconverter as I've yet to try that combination. I have the feeling however, that the CX Pro3 might be the better choice if you're considering a lens in this weight range (2.3 kgs), as the three sections would tend to twist less (not that there's much twist anyway), but the compromise means a slightly longer tripod to pack or carry. A very good value for money tripod, but I have reservations about the advertised maximum weight capacity of 8 kgs.

Comments about Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Like many I first bought a cheap-o tripod ($[$]) and hoped it would be good enough. It wasn't. I choose the 055CXPRO4 over the 3-section version for its ability to easily fit in luggage. I feel the best tripod is the one that you have with you. It's so compact when folded that it is no trouble carrying around and makes you feel less conspicuous as a result. The 4-section is likely not as stable as the 3-section, but it's plenty stable for the light Nikon gear that I use. The Manfrotto 498RC2 head seems to be a good choice for this tripod and for what I use it for (landscape and macro).Macro use is another strong point as it can get very low to the ground.I highly recommend it, especially as it was only $15 more than the 3-section version (055CXPRO3).

I purchased this to complement my small travel-oriented Sirui carbon tripod, which is super-compact and weighs very little, but is not as stable as a "large" tripod.

This Manfrotto tripod on the other hand is rock-solid. Very well-designed. Reasonable weight but fairly bulky. Despite having purchased the 4-section legs, which makes it more compact, it remains an overall large piece of equipment to haul around.

But I could not be more pleased with the quality and solidity of the tripod.

I really like this tripod. It is light, easily adjustable, and provides a good solid platform. I gave it 4 stars because it feels like all of the pieces aren't solidly fitted together. It tightens up just fine and works great. It just makes me worry things are going to come loose over time. In all though I'm very happy with it and the great deal I got on it.

Comments about Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I bought this tripod to replace a Manfrotto / Bogen 3020 that is sturdy but heavy, and a Manfrotto 190CX3 that is lightweight but too unstable for my digiscoping gear. With 4 sections it will be compact enough to stow w luggage but tall and stable for critical long-lens technique necessary for digiscoping at focal lengths to 6000 mm. I recently hiked 8 miles thru knee-deep snow w this tripod/scope slung to my back and never felt any strain. Terrific product and perfect for my needs!

Comments about Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

The main feature we were looking for is the clamp style legs rather that twist. There are not so many carbon fiber choices like this. We tried two and this was by far the most rigid tripod. Our other tripods are Gitzo (completely rigid!) and Really Right Stuff (very rigid also). The Manfrotto doesn't have much flex with the camera mounted, is light, and compact. A lot of value and features for the price.

Well built tripod but big design flaw of center column prevents lowering of tripod without the column hitting the ground! How can they make such a bad mistake in anotherwise solid and light weight tripod? The best it can do is slide to the side and be horizontal, but that doesn't work. Come no Bogan, get with it.

Comments about Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I owned the 3 piece aluminum 055xprob for over 5 year and liked it and probably would have kept it, but my brother needed a good tripod and so I used the opportunity to to get something lighter for myself that would take less space so I got the 4 piece version of the Manfrotto Carbon Fiber.

I really expected to be blown away by it but the weight difference of about 2 pounds is barely noticeable when you put the heavy metal ball head in there. It's also a little shorter when extended which I don't like, but does take up less space when closed which helps with bags.

One thing I don't like about either tripods is that the center column does not come off so If you want to shoot low, you can't go lower than a foot and a half or so. Sure you can flip the column and make it be horizontal for macro shots, but that's of little help when you need to get low and shoot straight ahead or up. I knew this before I bought it but it still is enough to remove one star.

In conclusion, if this is your first real tripod, go for it. If you already own the aluminum version, you're not missing all that much. Unless you absolutely need to shed a couple of pounds, then it's not worth the extra money.

It's new so I haven't had a chance to get much use of it but it's super light. A lot easier to lug around than the aluminum legs I've used before. So far I'm pretty happy with it. It makes my gear a whole lot lighter!
