The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Lens is a standard lens with an ultra-bright f/1.4 aperture, which allows for fast, accurate shooting with available light. It is also the excellent choice for when a shallow depth of field is desired. An ideal portrait lens when used on a Nikon DX-format digital SLR, it approximates the angle of view similar to that of a 75mm lens on a Nikon FX-format digital SLR or a 35mm film camera.

The optical design of this lens minimizes flare and chromatic aberration. The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) feature ensures fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.

An ideal prime lens, perfect for full-length portraits, travel photography or any type of available-light shooting.

Note: G-type Nikkor lenses have no aperture control ring and are intended for use on Nikon D-SLRs that allow the lens aperture to be adjusted via the camera's command dial.

Note: AF-S feature is not supported by certain camera models. Please click here for a list of incompatible models.

I am a freelance portrait and event photographer. The Nikkor 50mm 1.4G is incredibly sharp throughout. Of course wide open at 1.4 you need to be very careful as your depth of field is so thin. I think many experience softness b/c of poor technique and not so much b/c of the lens itself. I'm a huge fan. I had the 50mm 1.8D and recently upgraded and I'm very glad that I did, even though the 50mm 1.8D was also great, especially for what it cost. Definitely recommend this lens.

I guess I got this from the very first batch received by B&H. I pre-ordered it and was really looking forward to spending the holidays taking portraits of the family and friends. From the first shots, it was clear (or not so clear) that something was not right. All of the shots seemed to have a soft focus and the colors were not at all saturated. I set up a shot with a test pattern and the camera (D80) mounted on a tripod. I took dozens of shots using both manual and auto focus. Manually, I was able to consistently get very sharp focus, even seeing the dust on the test pattern. As soon as I switched to auto-focus, it became obvious that something was out of calibration. Each shot was consistently significantly out of focus. I received a new Nikon 105mm f/2 dc lens at the same time as the 50mm. That lens is amazing in every way. I have taken about 1000 shots with it and it delivers striking performance. It passed the same tests I subjected the 50mm to with flying colors as did 2 other Nikon lenses.I will return this first 50mm to B&H and hope the replacement is better. It looks like I might need to wait a while, however, as they are out of stock again.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:

I shoot with a D810. This is my main lens for street photography and even use it for portraits and weddings. To me the price point is a no brainer for the quality. This lens is also AMAZING in low light.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:

I just bought this lense two days ago. I've been testing it with my dog. And so far I got beautiful photos with a beautiful blur. I liked the fact that I didn't have to edit the photos on photoshop. This is a beautiful blur. However sometimes the blur is too much. I noticed an excess of blur in the body of the dog. I will have to figure out how to shoot perfectly. About the autofocus I am not sure yet. Soemtimes is good, sometimes the images are not the best. I will also keep working on this. But definitely. I love the bokeh and light

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:

This lens was purchased to use as a portrait lens on the D7100. I was able to shoot some great photos and it is fast. The manual override is a nice feature. That said, it does feel cheaply made and it is disappointing that Nikon is having some of their lenses manufactured in China. Most of my lenses have been Sigma which I find high quality. Though this lens works fine, I do worry about the longevity.

The product is quite good, I have used the 50mm f/1.4D as well. similar performance so I think people who have got expensive body with focus motor , need not to buy the G lens. Still, It is a good one considering all the pros & cons.

Incredibly sharp lens, does great at night and in low light situations. Fabulous blur, with beautifully sharp focus. I'm currently learning with my first DSLR, which I've had for 16 months. In addition to the kit 18-55mm, I have purchased the Tamron 18-270mm, and the Tamron 90mm Macro lens. I feel the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G has rounded out my gear bag perfectly, and that I'm now set to really learn, and increase my skills, as well as my creativity.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:

I have a Nikon D7100 which is a wonderful camera. I read all the reviews discussing the pros & cons when compared to similar lenses. You can measure a lens in the lab all you want (which appeals to me as a scientist) but at the end of the day it's what it does when it is attached to your camera body taking photos in the real, 3D world. The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G prime is a fantastic portraiture lens on a DX body. The large apertures beautifully isolate the subject & the color rendition in natural light is amazing. Combined with the low-noise high ISO capability of the D7100, they also make a potent low-light-level rig. I started B&W photography over 45 years ago with a (full-framed) Nikon F & 50mm f/1.4 lens. I have many lenses but for these two, I reserve the word "magical".

Wow this is my first prime lens and first 1.4 fs lens. I really like being able to shoot in low light and shallow debt of field. It is easy to get images out of focus with such narrow debt of field. Example shooting child shoes, one shoe was two inches behind other show showed up as out of focus.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:

Using Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G for: Street photography. Portraits. Bokeh. Landscape. Makes me really THINK, COMPOSE before I shoot. I'm pleased with the results. Am learning how to use this 50mm with my Nikon1 v2 + ft1 mount adapter, as well.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:

This is my favorite lens by far. I also have 24 2.8, 35 2.0 and 105 Micro, but 50 1.4 is getting used about 90%.

Great optical quality, fast focus, ability to see in the dark and nice bokeh are what I like about it. Construction seems to be much better than my other 50mm 1.8.

My older 24 and 35 have metal hoods, but 50 has a plastic one. Well, I guess these are times of plastic.
