The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Lens is a standard lens with an ultra-bright f/1.4 aperture, which allows for fast, accurate shooting with available light. It is also the excellent choice for when a shallow depth of field is desired. An ideal portrait lens when used on a Nikon DX-format digital SLR, it approximates the angle of view similar to that of a 75mm lens on a Nikon FX-format digital SLR or a 35mm film camera.
The optical design of this lens minimizes flare and chromatic aberration. The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) feature ensures fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.
An ideal prime lens, perfect for full-length portraits, travel photography or any type of available-light shooting.
Note: G-type Nikkor lenses have no aperture control ring and are intended for use on Nikon D-SLRs that allow the lens aperture to be adjusted via the camera's command dial.

This is going to be the primary lens I'll keep on my camera for portraits and street photography for numerous reasons
1. It's small and light, hence very easy to carry
2. The wide open aperture (as low as 1.4) makes it ideal for low light photography without needing a flash
3. The shallow depth of field makes it ideal for portraits and opens up a whole range of interesting bokeh and blurred background photographs
4. Sturdy construction and a great lens for the price

I'm a full-time photographers of 9 years and this is my 3rd 50mm 1.4. The previous two were the Nikkor 1.4D model (which is still available on BH). The 50 has been a workhorse for me and has been used for pretty much every job I've been on. So, when the new 1.4G came out I got excited and sold off my other two 50s. I mean, cummon, Canon stepped up their game with the 1.2 and I assumed that this was Nikon's response.
I could not be more disappointed. The lens feels poorly made, it's lighter and most importantly... it is SLOOOOOOW. The image quality isn't any better than the previous lens. My 1.4 used to be my go-to lens for low light scenarios but this new lens doesn't respond well. I've stuck by Nikon for a long time and am really disappointed!!!
I'm about ready to put it up on CraigsList and buy a new 1.4D before they stop making it. I hope this review saves someone else from making the same mistake.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
Great lens! Key lens for my growing bag. Very light, and durable at the same time. Feels good, smooth fast focus, and incredible in low light. I use this lens for portraits, landscapes, events, weddings, pretty much just a nice overall lens. I would definitely recommend it, whether a beginner or pro.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I bought it with my new D600. They make an excellent combo. I had Nikon 50mm 1.8D already but whishing to have this one!
1.4 aperture does make a difference when shooting in low light.
Focus speed is all right. Manual Focus override is nice!.
Photos taken with this lens look awesome (nice colours, nice bokeh, and very sharp!) You'll never get this pictures with a zoom lens!
The light weight makes my D600 so light to have all day shooting.
Whenever I need a little more zoom, I change to 1.5x crop and convert it to 75mm!
Hope this help!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
Waiting for the backorder was worth it. I own the 50mm 1.4D but opted to purchase the 50mm 1.4G because I like having the focus mechanism completely contained within the lens (on the 1.4D the front lens element moves in and out). Foregoing the aperture ring was also not a big deal. The photo quality is great with minimum distortion and the big aperture is fantastic! My only gripe is that the 1.4G takes a different filter size than the 1.4D so there was a bit of an additional cost to outfit with new filters.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
This lens can see in the dark and focus lightning fast. No complaints. Very impressed. Lovely wide open, but really sings between 2.8 and 5.6.
The little white dot you use to align the lens to attach to the body is a bit small and can be tricky to find locate in the dark.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
The new 50mm f/1.4 AF-S is a far better choice than any zoom for use in low light, and effectively quadruples your ISO, with no increase in noise, compared to any exotic f/2.8 zoom. The 50mm f/1.4 increases your ISO by ten times compared to any f/4.5 zoom, again with no change in noise.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I'm using this lens with a Nikon D600 and the results are stunning. Such a wonderful depth of field and bokeh. It makes pretty much every picture more beautiful. The autofocus is fast, precise and quiet and the lens itself is not too heavy so in combination with the relatively light body of the D600 it's not a burden to carry the camera around all day.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I have this lens almost always on my D600 as it is great for nearly all shots. I was borrowing an old nikkor 50mm 1.4 (not d) and decided it was finally time to get my own lens. I love the fact that I'm not acidentally hitting the aperature ring anymore and can take pictures without the camera blinking Aperature Error. The price is great as this is the cheapest of the 1.4 primes. I'd recommend starting out your lens collection with this must needed lens, or make it your only lens you need.
The only con I can think to this is that the focus seems slightly slow, but is about the same compared to the other f1.4 primes. It's accurate so there's no problem in getting good pictures if you're not impatient.
Make sure that you get a 58mm filter, as in the first week of having this lens, I had an accident and the filter broke, but the lens was perfectly fine.

Usually viewed as the most useless focal length, but I purchased this lens to fill the gap between my 16-35 and 70-200 and to have at least one fast lens. Secondly, the lens is so light weight, it can be easily carried all day on the D600. I've done quite a bit of testing, SHARP, SHARP, SHARP!

I bought this lens to use with my Nikon D7000, with the hope that I will someday upgrade to a full frame camera. I've only used it a few times, but am amazed by it's low-light capabilities. The bokeh is very nice and pictures are sharp. You can get the depth of field extremely shallow, which is really making me work to improve my technique. The feel is very solid and sturdy... more so than it's DX counterpart, the 35mm f1.8g. I look forward to trying it as a portrait lens on my DX camera.
