The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Lens is a standard lens with an ultra-bright f/1.4 aperture, which allows for fast, accurate shooting with available light. It is also the excellent choice for when a shallow depth of field is desired. An ideal portrait lens when used on a Nikon DX-format digital SLR, it approximates the angle of view similar to that of a 75mm lens on a Nikon FX-format digital SLR or a 35mm film camera.
The optical design of this lens minimizes flare and chromatic aberration. The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) feature ensures fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.
An ideal prime lens, perfect for full-length portraits, travel photography or any type of available-light shooting.
Note: G-type Nikkor lenses have no aperture control ring and are intended for use on Nikon D-SLRs that allow the lens aperture to be adjusted via the camera's command dial.

I am a freelance portrait and event photographer. The Nikkor 50mm 1.4G is incredibly sharp throughout. Of course wide open at 1.4 you need to be very careful as your depth of field is so thin. I think many experience softness b/c of poor technique and not so much b/c of the lens itself. I'm a huge fan. I had the 50mm 1.8D and recently upgraded and I'm very glad that I did, even though the 50mm 1.8D was also great, especially for what it cost. Definitely recommend this lens.

I'm a full-time photographers of 9 years and this is my 3rd 50mm 1.4. The previous two were the Nikkor 1.4D model (which is still available on BH). The 50 has been a workhorse for me and has been used for pretty much every job I've been on. So, when the new 1.4G came out I got excited and sold off my other two 50s. I mean, cummon, Canon stepped up their game with the 1.2 and I assumed that this was Nikon's response.
I could not be more disappointed. The lens feels poorly made, it's lighter and most importantly... it is SLOOOOOOW. The image quality isn't any better than the previous lens. My 1.4 used to be my go-to lens for low light scenarios but this new lens doesn't respond well. I've stuck by Nikon for a long time and am really disappointed!!!
I'm about ready to put it up on CraigsList and buy a new 1.4D before they stop making it. I hope this review saves someone else from making the same mistake.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
The native bokeh is tremendous. The amount of light processed on low lit subjects is exceptional. Captures very high detail and sharpness in potraits. Very good walk around lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
This is the first 50mm lens that I have purchased and will admit that I was skeptical if it would fit my everyday needs. I typically use a zoom lens to capture my kids, landscapes and architecture, however since I received this lens it has been on my Nikon D600 ever since. It creates nice effects and is crystal clear. I would recommend this lens for sure!

I bought this as a step up from the 1.4 D. I got the image quality I was looking for but took a step down in focusing. It is slower than the 1.4D but not by much. It is nice and quiet.

I'm still getting used to this lens, but so far I l ove It. it doesn't focus as fast as I hoped so I find myself manually focusing to get the perfect focal point I'm looking for so that is why I have it a 4 star rating instead of 5.

Fine art images, portraiture, and lifestyle photography, landscapes, & animals.
Great in low light, and can be pretty sharp at higher fstops as well. Depending on what I'm shooting I can shoot nearly wide-open. Focus is soft at f1.4-which is just something that you prefer or you don't, but a tad more sharpness is found around f2-2.8 while keeping a beautiful DOF. I have also shot some sunset landscapes at around f6 and higher and was not expecting the sharpness I got! I was very happy! Such a versatile lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I had bought the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 version several years ago to use on D40x and later a D300s, but to be honest with the cropped sensor I tended to use a 35mm Nikkor instead. I bought a D800 last summer and started using the 50mm f/1.8 more and more for portraits and some nature shots. As much as I learned to love that lens I really wanted the advantage of f/1.4, finally took the plunge to buy it and really glad that I did. The lens is fast to focus, great bokeh, and seems very rugged.
I know many photographers prefer fast zooms, and I have some, but as an "experienced" (old) photographer I prefer prime glass in some situations. Primes like this are much lighter, easy to carry, and will force you to take better photos without standing in one spot to take photos. Your feet become your zoom, and that alone will make you a more focused photographer.
Not cheap, but well worth the cost!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
So far a great lens. Upgrade from my 1.8 and love it. As most reviews say about a f4 there is not a huge difference between the two lenses. Does offer a lot of light indoors. Strong bokeh and very sharp images.
Can't wait to get more practice with it and find its sweet spot.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
My review is based on my experience from previous use of 50mm 1.8d lens and recent purchase of thus 50mm 1.4g lens. Received this product from B&H as free shipping, on time. Excellent lens, good as all purpose/walkaround/candids as well as portraits especially with cropped sensors, indoors focal length is little bigger if you want to do group shots. I noted some vignetting wide open at 1.4 , no problem with bigger f no. Excellent glass, Fast focus, good bokeh, would recommend to buy it if you can it, If you don't have enough money you can still get very good results with 50mm 1.8. D or 50mm 1.8 g.

I bought this lens to be my go to lens for portraits. It creates the perfect bokeh background and really makes the subject in focus stand out. For the money this lens is fantastic!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I just received this about a week ago, and used it for the first time for a environmental portrait shoot. I shot nearly wide open in open shade, and the subject was sharp while the background was nicely out of focus. Used both auto-focus (it was so quiet I had to check to make sure it was working) and manual, and it was very easy to find focus. Very happy with this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I am a newbie to photography...watching a lot of videos and learning how to take the camera off of auto/green. I needed a lens that I could could use in the house where there is not much natural light. I am blown away by the brightness in the pictures. As I learn, I will comment more. Not much help at this point for those that know what they are doing. The lens does what it says it will do and to the eye of a novice, produces great results.

Lighter than previous, probably not as well made but who cares? Bummer that it's all from China now but performance is exceptional with fast focusing and sharp at f/2 (don't usually go below for fear of missing focus but who knows).
