The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens (White Box) from Canon is a standard zoom lens that features the smaller size image circle, exclusively designed for Canon cameras using the APS-C size sensor. The focal length is equivalent to 29-88mm in the 35mm format. It is a versatile lens for everyday shooting and can focus as close as 9.8".

This lens features Canon's Optical Image Stabilization technology, which provides up to 4 stops of compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds. This ensures clear, crisp images, even in dim light.

One aspherical lens element minimizes aberrations and enables an overall high standard of performance and its circular aperture results in pleasing background blur.

Note! White Box merchandise comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's packaging. It is not a returned or refurbished item. It still includes all the manufacturer's accessories.

Uses optics designed to take full advantage of the small image circle and short back focus in EF-S lenses.
Optical image stabilization compensates for camera shake up to 4 stops for blur-free imaging even in low light situations.
Provides a constant minimum focus distance of 9.8" (25 cm).
Includes one aspherical lens element which minimizes aberrations and provides sharp imaging.
Circular aperture diaphragm produces a more attractive appearance to out-of-focus background areas in photos shot using the widest apertures.

I heard so many good things about this lens that I decided to give it a try, since the price is so cheap.
This lens was the biggest surprise to me of all lenses I have ever purchased. It is razor sharp even wide open at every focal length and in the corresponding focal length range it is as sharp as my 24-105L lens on the 5D MK II body.
It is a cheaply built plastic mount lens, but you can not expect a "L" lens built quality in a cheap lens like this one. I keep it on my 3rd body a Canon 50D all the time and it is with me in the car everywhere I go. Many times it came very handy and the picture quality is amazing.
The bottom line is that you can not loose on this lens and I highly recommend it if you need a small and light walk around lens for your crop field Canon body.

Using DSLR for Video function not stills.

    Good:
    Cheap for a DSLR lens
Image Stabilization with an on/off switch
Light weight, doesn't destabilize the camera

    Bad:
    Variable aperture challenging indoors
Focus ring is on the lip not the body
    Only for APS-C cameras

Its less than half the price of any decent Canon prime. Aside from this the 50mm 1.8 II (~$99) would be a good starting lens for experimenting which focal lengths are useful to you. When you've saved up your pennies you can buy the 'serious' lenses which go from hundreds to thousands. To put it in perspective, this lens is about the price of a good CPL filter on a 72/77mm lens. It works in daylight or in very good lighting with high ISO indoors. It gives you time to think about what you really want rather than sinking a lot of money immediately.

My old lens of this type lasted 15 years of traveling around the globe. It is light and did so well for so long. I'm glad to have another, but this time around I got a case for it and vow to use it religiously so the lens will last even longer and I will need to clean it less frequently.

Bought this lens for shooting closer up than my 28-135 USM lens could reach for car shows and cruise-in's where you want to be closer the your subject. Have had manual focus limitation problems, where it couldn't "reach" good focus. Do like having a lighweight lens for carrying around and less worry dollars wise, but will probably not buy another [*] Canon lens because of this example.

We use our EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Autofocus Lens (White Box) for a photo booth, attached to a Canon T3i. So far it works great. We've always trusted Canon products. The images are clear and sharp. We wish the lease focused faster; however, for the price we paided, we are not complaining.

For what you paid for it, this lens is not to bad. Some of my pictures are defiantly "soft" when I know that everything was in focus. The lens is cheaply made, with every thing made from plastic and a lot of slop in the barrel movement. Overall though for a sub [$] lens, it's pictures aren't that bad.

Comments about Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens (White Box):

I am fairly new to the world of photography and video and was looking for a good affordable lens to help aid me through the learning processes. After much research, I chose this lens because it provided the same great uses as a normal stock camera lens one would get when purchasing a camera set. However, the lens is even better providing a few better specs. I personally find the lens to be very useful for every day life. I find it to work very well for video as well. One reviewer stated that the auto-focus was loud, causing it to be terrible for video usage. However, I believe he is totally wrong. The auto-focus is basically silent and does not even come close to interfering with video recording.

Some have said the lens seems a little poorly put together, but I have found it to be very durable so far. Obviously if you avoid dropping it and mishandling it the lens should last for a very long time, if not a life time.

Overall I highly suggest this lens for beginners. It helps get your feet wet without shelling out a lot of cash. Of course, the lens is also great for any other different level of experienced photographers and video specialists.

But you don't have to take my word for it. (Levar Burton reading rainbow anybody?)

Comments about Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens (White Box):

I use this one as a basic lens and it's ok. I mean, for a beginner, it's a fun lens to have, but it doesn't do much to me.

I received this lens as part of a kit when I purchased my camera several years ago. I have had nothing but great service from the first one--that is--until I dropped it in the sand (enough said) I am a semi-pro photographer and have used these lenses hard. Rave reviews.

I purchased this lens to replace the one that came with my kit. This is a great lens especially for the price.
