Traveling with a large lens (600 f/4) has always been a difficult task. On some of my shoots I would typically send the lens by conventional ground transportation at a cost of[$]each way. Over time this begins to add up, not to mention the inconvenience of having to send the lens several days before my planned trip. After researching several lens bags that according to the manufacture, fit into the overhead compartment of most major airlines I narrowed my selection to the Lowpro Lens Trekker 600 AW II. The Lens Trekker 600 has more padding, includes a full shoulder harness and waist belt, and safely protects my lens (with camera body); the decision was made. After removing the waist belt, the Trekker 600 fit nicely into the overhead compartment on all my recent trips. The newly designed Lens Trekker 600 AW II is also comfortable to carry on my back for long hikes into the field. I am also a wildlife researcher photographer and find the Lens Trekker to be a perfect choice when hiking to remote locations to photograph cougars, bears, or spotted owls. I made several calls to the airlines and to customer service at Lowepro to confirm the measurements of the case with the waist belt removed and everyone agreed it meets the carry-on restrictions (size). I don’t know why any serious photographer would go with another manufacture.

This pack provides very good protection for my 500mm lens and appears to be assembled to a high standard. However, the shoulder and waist padding is inadequate for more than short hikes even without a tripod strapped on. In particular, the waist "seat belt" pads do not wrap around very far, creating irritation around the belly and hips even over a jacket. I plan on taking the pack to an outdoor pro shop to see if the strap pads they sell would help. With the hot weather coming on, this pack will not be very useable as is.

Also, in places the cushions that close around the neck of the lens (or tele-extender) attach with velcro directly to the fabric that lines the case. I am concerned that the fabric will break down over time, and may glue velcro over it.

At this price, it is irritating to have to modify a product right off the bat.

Comments about Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 II AW Lens Case:

When it comes to packing a long telephoto lens in the field to a specific location or shoot, and you MUST have your hands free for the trek, there is simply no better choice than the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600! Period.
Add a couple SF type accessory bags to one side for smaller lenses, TC's or accessories, and strap your tripod and gimbal head to the other side, and you are ready to head out, fully equipped, and nothing to worry about.

Comments about Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 II AW Lens Case:

I bought this to carry my 600mm Canon lens, and it does that well. It is (barely) suitable as a carry-on, but it is a tight fit in the overhead storage on smaller planes. It is much easier to transport my lens than the original hardshell case provided by Canon. I can attach a body and be ready for that quick shot!

Comments about Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 II AW Lens Case:

It's a huge bag and may be that's why it can accomodate the 600mm with extender and body (battery grip) all rigged together.

Construction is great (as usual from LP) but the onyl complaint I have is the side mount for tripod. It's very flimsy and unstable for Gitzo/Gimbal's. I have the 3542XLS and it's hard to stabilize it with the provided bottom pouch and 2 straps.

I have to think of using cords to fix this issue but haven't tried it yet. Otherwise it's a good bag for hikes and stash in some extra puffy/food/small accessories.

I currently use this for high school football, to hold my D3S and 400mm fully extended lens. Love the fact that I can keep the lens fully extended (the main reason I purchased this product), ready to pull out and use, when I switch to another lens. Everything is securely stowed away, which makes it easy to get me gear to the field, and around the field on by back. Clips on the side allow me to connect my monopod and stool, for hands-free carrying of gear to the field.

You want to carry a super telephoto with body attached with room to spare? You want a bag of very high quality? With excellent harness? With quality, smooth zippers? Look no further.
But, if you want close to the above in a smaller package, look at the Tamrac 5793. I own both and each have their place.

I use this case for my Nikon 600mm f4 ED VR. With the hood(s) reversed I can leave the camera body on and be all set to go. Something you can't do with the trunk case that came with the lens. It's good protection for a big ticket item like the 600. If you are going to hike into a remote area with a big lens I can see real value here. I do feel a sense of security having the lens in this case while getting to where I will be shooting. I have not tried to fly with it yet so I don't know if the size is OK for carry on. I would certainly recommend this case to protect your valuable equipment and does appear really well made. Oh and the feature that allows you to carry a tripod…. well not my gitzo series 5, more like a mono-pod. just saying...

Purchased this to haul a Nikon 600mm with a 2x teleconverter and D3 body attached for an upcoming trip to urban areas in Europe. I have tested it out twice
on hikes in rough terrain and fairly uneven and steep trails in southern New Mexico. Hikes were about 2.5miles round trip. I carried the above plus a Gitzo tripod with Wimbley head, a 70-200mm and a 24-70mm. It felt good to this 60+ year old photog,so flat towns and cities should be no problem. I have not noticed any imbalance in these distances. Shoulder, waist and chest straps are generous and comfortable. If I were trying to use it as pack while technical climbing I would use some extra sheepskin slip-over pads on the straps. Interior padding seems very adequate. A keeper of a bag.

If you're looking for a rugged, high quality bag to accomodate a DSLR camera with an attached 400mm+ supertelephoto lens, TC and hood, then look no further. The Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 AW is the best bag available. The bag has plenty of room to store a "ready-to-fire" camera system, some personal items and accessories. The padding is superb, camera access is fast and the interior padded bracing to hold the camera/lens in place, inside the bag, is excellent. I bought my first Lowepro waistpack in 1981. And I still use it when hiking with a small camera setup because I've never found anything better to replace it. Like the waistpack, the Lens Trekker 600 II AW works great for on-the-move photographers who need a quality bag to carry or store their ready-to-fire supertelephoto camera sytem. I'm a very petite 100-pound photographer, so handling a big lens setup and a big bag can be challenging. So, when walking on gravel or paved roads, I use a folding, lightweight hand truck to carry the large Lowepro bag. Works like a charm because the waistbelt on the Trekker 600 fits right around the back of the handtruck, keeping the bag firmly in place. This is another great product from Lowepro at a very affordable price. I highly recommend it!

My Canon 600mm, with camera body and 2X teleconverter all attached fit in the main compartment. I haven't tried yet to attach my tripod to the side, but it should work fine.

I will also be able to carry a 1.4X, spare battery, spare CF cards, flash and better beamer. Not much room beyond that.

This pack will get you from the car to your nearby location. It does not give the flexibility of carrying lunch AND an extra layer of clothing AND a different lens.

I use this pack to carry my Nikkor 400 f2.8 with teleconverter and camera body attached. This is a lot to carry and this pack makes it manageable. This pack would not be my choise for general use, but when you need to drag a big lens around, it does the job.

This pack does need a better way of attaching a heavy tripod. The method recommended does not provide for good balance when hiking.

I bought this pack to shoot wildlife in the back country and day hikes in National Forests etc. with a Canon 800mm mounted on a Pro Body. The Camera mounted on the 800 fits excellent and the pack offers ample protection. However, the undersize shoulder straps and waist strap render it useless for anything other then transport storage or very short trips into a stadium or something close to the car. The added weight of a tripod really makes this pack uncomfortable and awkward when strapped on the side mounted tripod holder included with the pack. The simple truth is this pack is just not designed to support the weight of what it is intended for.

I ordered this bag to help with an issue of dealing with bringing some of the long lenses without the large hardshell Canon lens cases. It is incredibly well built and designed. I'll have no problems fitting a Canon 500mm lens with a full size 1 Series body attached. Also great for the 200-400mm lens, the 600mm lens. Each time I pick up this bag and look it over, I discover more great features!

Comments about Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 II AW Lens Case:

Bought this case for carrying my new Canon 500mm f/4L lens attached to a 7D body and grip. The case has plenty of room even with a 1.4x teleconverter in the mix. I do not really use the upper "shelf" function because it seems to make inserting the camera/lens combination a bit more difficult, but this does leave a fair amount of open space above the camera.

The way the case holds the lens in place is really excellent. The padding is definitely first rate and the exterior pocket is large enough for the 1.4x converter and a few other small items (spare batteries, etc).

The case is quite comfortable to hike around with for extended periods of time. Once you get it set up correctly so the weight is primarily on your hips, the bag functions like a backpack and you hardly know it's there.

All in all, a really nice product.

Comments about Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 II AW Lens Case:

This is a great pack when the big lens is what you're packing. I also have the Lowepro Pro Trekker 600 AW that packs the big lens with plenty of space for other lenses, bodies, etc., but when I just want to pack my Canon 600L IS this is how I do it. Also great for packing all your gear in the vehicle and traveling. My other lenses and accessories go in the Pelican 1620 and the 600 with 1DIV attached ride in the Lens Trekker.

For space, this version II of the bag is a few inches taller to accommodate a 600mm lens with the body and extenders attached. Either the 1.4 or 2x extenders can be attached with the camera body and zip securely.

Plenty of external slip-lock attachment points if you use Lowepro's modular system. Also includes a tripod attachment to mount on either side of the bag. With a heavy tripod it does make the bag lopsided (unlike the Pro Trekker and others that mount the tripod centered on the outside), but there really isn't a way around this with the way this bag opens.

Overall its an excellent bag and built like a tank, comfortable, and well designed.

This is my second Lowepro camera bag and it's purchase was motivated because of the first. Well constructed and designed. Strapping can be adjusted to fit a big ape (I'm 6'-5", 230). Nice padding and blocking to safely contrain my Sigma 800mm telephoto. This is a big backpack to carry a heavy load, if your looking for something light and streamline, buy a smaller lens.
