The Leica 24mm f/3.8 Elmar M Aspherical Lens is a more compact and economical wide angle option to the 24mm f/2.8 Elmarit M lens. But even at its initial f-stop of 3.8, contrast and detail rendering are already excellent. This high-performance lens makes it possible to work efficiently in cramped quarters. It adds a more dynamic feeling to close-up pictures and it gives landscape photographs significantly more depth.

The lens is optimised for use with the digital M8 camera, and will hardly show any light falloff when set to wide open aperture. At the medium f-stops, the depth of field is so large that it can even reproduce entire scenes in sharp focus. But even when used with a 35mm system, light falloff at the image edges will be visibly reduced (1.4 stop) when stopping down to f/5.6.

This lens has been updated with the "6-bit" coding, which allows the digital M camera to read this information optically and to identify which lens is being used. The camera can then (optionally) apply a "final stage" software based vignetting correction (for RAW images the lens used is simply recorded, no change is made).

Includes "6-bit code" which allows the digital cameras (i.e. M8) to identify which lens is being used, and also to store this information in image metadata

Comments about Leica Wide Angle 24mm f/3.8 Elmar M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens - Black:

In my experience, this lens produces beautifully rich contrast and tack sharp images. Stopped down to 5.6 it's nearly perfect to the naked eye. No evidence of significant aberration or distortion at 5.6 or higher, even in high contrast sunlit environments. For my money, this little lens produces comparable (if not better) overall image quality than it's big brother, the faster, heavier, and more expensive 24mm Summilux.

I enjoy using this lens for random landscape hand-helds while traveling. It helps to have the shoe-mount 24mm optical viewfinder for composition.

It's a light, compact lens...perfect for traveling. Maxing out at f/3.8 somewhat limits its low-light usage, but that's a fair tradeoff for it's portability. Indoors? Bang up the ISO a little or drop a flash on and keep firing.

And, even though f/3.8 won't get you the paper thin DOF the Lux brings you...the bokeh produced by this lens is typical Leica gorgeous. Subjects get gently pulled out of that rich, smooth background. Vignetting wide open at 3.8 is nearly impossible to detect, and easily correctible in post.

I've used this lens mostly on the M240, and a little bit with the M-E. On both cameras its performance was predictable and stable. Simply put: This lens rewards the photographer who has a good eye.

        Can't Fault It

Comments about Leica Wide Angle 24mm f/3.8 Elmar M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens - Black:

Great size, nice even weight to it, wonderful build quality, edge to edge perfection, micro contrast top notch.

Unless you need speed for your photography at 24mm (not really as strong a pre-requisite at this focal length) this is an investment you won't regret. The 3.8f also makes you think more about your photography, in the sense of street and people. It'll make you think about the whole image rather than a fast lens which is all about isolating the subject or low light shooting.

Comments about Leica Wide Angle 24mm f/3.8 Elmar M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens - Black:

I´d rather have a small slow sharp lens than a big fast sharp one. This one is excellent, even wide open at 3.8. I use it mostly on the M Monochrom, also on the M9, and like it better than the 18mm Super Elmar because of its size. I also have the 21 Elmarit, 28 Elmarit and 35 Summilux. The only one that´s sharper is the 35 Summi, but all these lenses are so good that my main reason for preferring it is size and angle of view. Very good on the street.

I'd deduct 1/2 star for the cost of this lens with the Leica 24mm viewfinder. That said, I'm very happy I have it. Virtually perfect rendition; sharp, proper contrast, holds detail to the edges at 5.6 and higher.

The inconvenience of using an external finder is more than offset by absolutely stellar optical performance, edge to edge. This lens has a smooth, solid, compact build and an excellently designed metal lens hood. HIghly recommended.

Images captured with this lens are very sharp and the color rendition is very accurate. The lens construction is superb and the lens is shipped with a high quality lens shade.

Comments about Leica Wide Angle 24mm f/3.8 Elmar M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens - Black:

This is a wonderful lens with superb rendering characteristics and negligible geometric distortion. On a M8.2 the lens produces a FOV equivalent (1.33X) to 32mm on film cameras. I use a Leica 24mm Brightline Finder on the accessory shoe since framing when wearing glasses is a bit slow using the 24mm bright line frames in the far corners of the M8 viewfinder. The Leica Brightline Finder is expensive but has 24mm framing lines for both film and digital M-series cameras.
