Comments about Smith-Victor CF5 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

OK, if you're like me, you clicked on tripods, then filtered for carbon fiber, then sorted by price low to high and looked for the first one that could support more than 10 lbs. Viola: the CF5. I use it mostly for shots with my Hasselblads, which only have a max shutter speed of 1/500. With filters on, or stopped down, my shutter speeds are LONG, so a stable tripod is a necessity.

The CF5 is rock solid and very light compared with my old metal tripod. It has some nice features, like a spirit level, extra (short) center column, reversible center column, weight hook and shoulder bag and strap. I was disappointed that the carry bag, while plenty long enough to accommodate a head mounted on the sticks, wasn't wide enough for my smallish Manfrotto 460MG which is fairly compact for a non-ballhead.

Operating the tripod is fairly straightforward. Twist to open, extend, twist to lock. To widen the stance, you pull out the non-spring-loaded tab at the top of each leg and swing the leg out, then push the tab back in. Not as slick as the top of the line tripods, but it works.

The center column, ridged to prevent spinning, is controlled by a single circular wing nut. Loosen the nut and the column slides. A very thin o-ring is there to protect your expensive gear if you fail to hold your camera while loosening the center-nut. With the height of this tripod, I doubt I'd raise the center column much, if at all, but be careful - especially if you weight the center column.

As someone pointed out, it's highly unlikely these are made in the USA. The instructions are comically bad. No company would manufacture products in the US and outsource the writing of the instructions to China. A failing fourth grader could write better prose. Of course, you won't need the instructions if you've ever used a tripod, but I point this out in case you're concerned about where things are made.

Comments about Smith-Victor CF5 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Perfect match for my MFT system.
Extends high enough for tall photographers.
Collapses small enough to pack into a suitcase for travel.
Light enough to backpack with all day.
A good tripod for the price.
        Nothing negative about the CF5.

Comments about Smith-Victor CF5 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Light, compact, and comes with accessories usually other manufacturers have as options you pay for.

Sturdy enough to easily support my 400 f/2.8 Nikon lens.

The centre column could move a touch easier, but this is common with most manufacturers.

Legs adjust easily and tighten securely.

One of three tripods ... I can really tell the difference in stablity especially when used in the more unstable settings ... did I mention it looks as solid as it feels. The only thing I didn't like was I had to figure out how to attach the shoulder strap ...

Comments about Smith-Victor CF5 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Bought it and it's suprisingly good and light. I've put more than 11 lbs and less than 15 lbs on it and it has delivered what it offers. The only downside is that, because of its design, spreading the legs is not so fast let alone acommodating them once spread and, in my case, the legs tend to get stuck sometimes and don't let you fold and unfold quickly. But over all, great product for the price.

Comments about Smith-Victor CF5 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Its not a gitzo but then again you're not paying a gitzo price. This tripod is perfectly steady for regular lenses. Ya not gonna put a 600mm F4 on this puppy!! Its light, reasonably sturdy and pretty easy to open and close. I'd say good value for a budget priced carbon tripod. Its not gonna get 5 stars simply because it's not for the really big stuff out there.

Use for portraits, landscapes, etc. Incredibly light for its size and strength. Nice and tall to avoid having to bend over to look through the lens. Overall, its the best value for carbon fiber tripod legs on the market today.

Comments about Smith-Victor CF5 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I am actually surprised at the build quality of this tripod, pretty sturdy and feels solid. Operationally, the knobs and leg locking mechanisms feel smooth and consistent. The reason I gave four stars is because the instructions/manual is so unclear and the language is so grammatically incorrect that I thought this wasn't US-made. It made me check the website to see where Smith-Victor's factory is, but it said they are located in Illinois. Overall, it is still a good buy, and very competitively priced. It definitely can't compete with a Gitzo, but very competitive against Giottos, Slik, Benbo,or Manfrotto.
