      Not Recommended for Sony PMW-EX1/R

Comments about Litepanels RM-F Ringlite Mini System 5600K Daylight Balanced Flood:

I own a Sony PMW-EX1, which has a similar physical design as the Sony PMW-EX1R. Because the microphone on the camera extends forward in front of the lens, you cannot mount the Ringlite Mini close enough to the camera to avoid seeing the Ringlite Mini at full wide zoom. You will see the circular outline of the Ringlite Mini in your video unless you zoom in 20%.

This limitation may be fine if you don't plan on shooting wide, but it limits your options when shooting with the EX1/R.

The Sony PMW-200 microphone design doesn't protrude forward as much as it does on the EX1/R. Perhaps it is time to upgrade to the PMW-200 if you want to use this Ringlite and have full zoom range.

Litepanels could have increased the inside diameter of the Ringlite Mini to avoid this problem.

If you own a different camera, just be sure that you don't have any part of the camera preventing you from mounting the Ringlite flush with the front of your lens. Otherwise, you might run into the same problem.

I have been hesistaing to buy this product for a while, because we primarly using DSLR's and they have a great response in low light. However just because they are great in low light, it doesn't mean you don't need to use any light. I use this in conbination with the 2 Litepanel 1x1 Bi-Color. And the results are fantastic. The adjustable dimmer works so good to get the perfect light in any situation.

Comments about Litepanels RM-F Ringlite Mini System 5600K Daylight Balanced Flood:

I use it for backstage filming on a musical reality show. I shoot in very dark area and the ringlite gives a beautiful glow to all my subjects. It does an amazing jobs on older persons if I take a minute to be at the right distance/angle.

I like the dimmer, it really doesn't change the color temperature. I use the dimmer instead of my iris, since I'm almost wide open all the time.

The good things are the absence of color shift when dimming, the weight, the power consumption for what it is and the quality of the product.

Not so great are the color of the light is 5100°k on my meter, meaning I have to add a 1/8 blue all the time to reach 5600°k, not so flood, it should come with a variable color like the 1x1, the way the color corrector gels attach to the light is not going to last very long. It's very fragile for sub renting, not my business but just a tought for my fellow colleague and the worst is the case that comes with it. Don't count on it for nothing, I can't even fit the bracket in it.

I had to custom made a d-tap to anton-bauer cable because I couldn't find one.

Comments about Litepanels RM-F Ringlite Mini System 5600K Daylight Balanced Flood:

I use this on my HVX-200 for both fill and ENG/EFP work. The quality of the light is just beautiful, and you don't need to run it full, because you'll dry the eyeballs on your talent, especially if you're in close. Keep a close check on your monitor, or just watch for their constant blinking - adjust the dimmer accordingly and you should be good to go. You can also turn on and off, independently, the top, middle and bottom thirds of the light, giving unique effects as well as saving on battery power.

The gels and diffusion that come with it are very nice, and warm the light nicely. Since it's already daylight-balanced, you don't have to worry about them unless you're trying to match tungsten, and the carry pouch they come in is ballistic nylon, so they're very well protected.

I prefer to use it plugged in, since batteries for this much light can be heavy, but you'll still get a decent amount of time with one of the Cool-Lux models. Not enough to do a whole wedding, but with careful planning, you can get quite a lot of useful shots.

Would have given 5-stars, but the bracket that comes with it is a little difficult to use. Even after much practice, it still takes me a couple of minutes to strip off my matte box and apply this creature to the front. Of course, the light is gorgeous, so I wish I could only dock 1/2 a star. Another reviewer found a good workaround for it, by having a hole drilled for a quick-release mount; I'll be doing the same thing. Strange that LitePanels would miss this detail.

All in all, you get what you pay for, and this package delivers.

Oh, don't stand on the case, for crying out loud - it's definitely NOT of Pelican quality, but everything fits securely. If you need it to keep the dust and rain off of it, it's fine, but otherwise, treat it gently.

This is a beautiful light...so easy to control...I'm nitpicking on little details, but B&H customers deserve to know, especially at this price point.

Overall, if you can afford it, I'd say get it. You won't be sorry.

Comments about Litepanels RM-F Ringlite Mini System 5600K Daylight Balanced Flood:

I bought this ring light thinking it was the answers to my prayers for providing needed extra light in low light conditions and indoors filming close-ups. Unfortunately, I turned out very disappointed with the overall product quality. After plugging it in and running it for two minutes, I shut it off and it did not work again after I tried turning it on a second time. I will have to return it and get my money back.

Furthermore, the included bracket is indeed difficult to use as stated by a previous reviewer of this product and it does not allow enough adjustment for positioning the camera relative to the opening in the ring light.

Finally, I own three other on-camera lights for my video camera and none of them cost me more than $100. They all work just fine. This ring light cost over $1800 and does not work. I believe most people would see why I am not only disappointed but rather upset overall.

Comments about Litepanels RM-F Ringlite Mini System 5600K Daylight Balanced Flood:

I use the product on-camera and off-camera. As an on-camera keylight I would really prefer something larger but then you lose practicality. Off-camera its ok but its a spot not a flood, and using the diffusion gels included kill its output. Works best for fill applications.

But its still great for both those applications. What I do is use it on-camera with a diffusion gel and very low intensity so it acts as a fill and not a key, then you avoid the kind of weird shadows ring lights make. Off-camera I bounce it off a white/silver reflector and its awesome fill doing it that way. Or you can use it for nice rimming.

I purchased the studio rods bracket from litepanels and had them drill a hold for a tripod QR and use that for quick setups between on & off-camera. Forget the included bracket its a pain.

And I've mostly used the D-tap from the same battery I use with my EX-1 to power the light, you can get a couple hours.

Use it to fill in natural ambient daylight and you can't go wrong. Or for night-time ENG on-camera. Or for some nice rimming effects from behind. Its daylight balanced, portable, lightweight, dependable, flexible and has decent output. Good investment. Litepanels backs up their products too.

I almost gave it 4 stars but decided it is what it is and its pretty good for that.
