The Joby Gorillapod Focus is an ultra-versatile mini-tripod (or grip) that was designed for use with large pro SLR cameras with large zoom lens attached, or with prosumer level camcorders (max. load capacity of 11 lbs/5kg). The Gorillapod Focus allows you to achieve the stability of a standard tripod, but at a fraction of the size and weight. The three multi-segmented flexible legs can be formed to grip almost any protrusion, be it a branch, doorknob, rock, or uneven surface.
Its sockets are machined from sturdy aluminum, with anodized gunmetal finish. Each of the joints can bend and rotate 360°, to wrap around objects. The bottom rubber segment on the legs is larger to allow it to be used in the traditional way.

I bought this along with the ballhead mount and attempted to wrap it around a bicycle frame to support my 5D Markii with 24-70mm zoom (well within the gorillapod's weight range). One of the pod's legs broke in half as I was attaching it- and I swear I wasn't being too rough! Then, when I was tightening the ballhead to the pod the screw snapped in half. I returned this junk for a full refund immediately.

Great Tool to change your perspective. Fun to use in sports events with Live View feature on cameras, wireless triggers and CamRanger.
I did not purchase the Gorillapod head as I prefer the Monfrotto RC-2 plate for Quick Release . Word of caution take you time to set up in a stable manner. It is not "bulletin-proof" but it can be used safely.
Endless possibilities. Today I shoot an NFL kids mini camp and plan to use to make the kids appear larger than life. The larger the lens and camera weight, the more of concern. I have used at 6-7 lbs. of weight.
Cons: Can be difficult to aim the camera or setup legs to support camera and lens. Especially if unusual angle, Hanging on pipes, fence, or large lens at steep angles.

I use a tripod a lot and having this just makes my life easier. I shoot in a lot of low light situations and having Gorillapod Focus where I can have a tripod everywhere I go is priceless.

This is a great piece of gear for a photographer. Easy to carry, reasonably priced, and great for stabilization. I use it with my Canon 5D mk 3. It even works with the heavier lenses like the 24-70.

Even if you have a really good tripod, your kit should have one of these. It's the best, small tripod out there that's small enough to take when you just don't feel like taking your "real" one. That said I still make sure the thing is very secure if I'm wrapping it around something with my expensive gear on it. I also highly recommend getting the one with the ball head if you don't have a removable one you can take from your other tripod.

I fly a lot and this tripod works perfectly because I often get stuck in a conference room for my shoots with little room to set up a standard tripod. The biggest plus though, is its size. It's one less bag I have to carry and check through the airport. You do have to fiddle with it a bit to get it balanced before your shoot, and make sure the legs are arched out rather than bowed in, otherwise (and this happened) your tripod could start slowly leaning over under the weight of your camera. (and my camera didn't exceed the weight requirements) All in all, and good price for an easy fix.

I was originally going to get a lighter version to use with my speedlight's. However I went with this one because I could also use it with a Dslr and a fairly heavy lens.
I must say I'm impressed.
So far it does everything I'd expect it too. It was well worth the money.

Could be a little stiffer. Slips a little when the legs are splayed way out. Most of the time it's pretty solid tho. Unlike my real sticks, it's small so It's always in my bag now.

I use this tripod with my nikno d4 and nikkor 24-70mm lens without any issues. It is stable and sturdy. I didn't buy the head that came with it I chose the gitzo head instead plus it was cheaper with the current rebate going on.

I love this little tripod! I bought it for my trip to Las Vegas - I wanted to take some landscape and night photos out at Valley of Fire and didn't want to lug my big old Manfrotto with me. I bought this based on the fact that it could hold up to 11lbs, which I knew was enough for my Canon 5DIII and 70-200mm zoom lens. It worked fabulously! I used the top of the car as my flat surface and bent the legs around so that I could take night shots and had no problems whatsoever. This is definitely my 'go to' tripod for traveling from now on!

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus - Flexible Mini-Tripod:
I had a smaller Gorillapod that I used for my point & shoot cameras, which will not hold the weight of my Nikon. I do have a full sized tripod that I rarely take out because it takes up so much more room. If you're going to a party, but wanted to bring a DSLR, this would be a nice solution. It is strong enough to hold my 70-200 f/2.8 lens with my D300 + battery grip. Depending on how wide the legs' angles are, it is still possible to make it collapse. But, a quick adjustment and you'll be able to use this with the 70-200mm and lighter lens. I cannot comment on any heavier combo since the D300 + MBD10 + 70-200 is my heaviest combo.I got the Manfrotto 494 Mini Ball Head w/RC2 QR Plate over the Joby's X Ballhead because the quick release system is easier to use, despite a lighter weight capacity.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus - Flexible Mini-Tripod:
On my recent trip to New York, I stopped in to B&H and bought a Gorillapod Hybrid for my Canon Powershot G1 X.For the G1 X, it works like a champ. For my EOS 5D with 24-70 f/2.8 zoom lens attached, not so much. The mass of camera gear that the 5D presents to the smaller Gorillapod is just too much for it, and so I can't use the Hybrid with my DSLR setup.Thing is, I was (and am) sufficiently enamored of the Gorillapod Hybrid and what it could do for my G1 X that I felt I needed a solution for my 5D with its greater mass. I was, therefore, happy to discover that Gorillapod made a model suited to the task, that being the focus. So I ordered one (with a Vanguard ball head). How does it work?In a nutshell, it's great. The construction is solid, and it does a very good job of holding the ball head, camera, and attached lens, all securely in place. I've not noted any sagging over time, and the rubber grips and feet contribute to a very solid feel for the tripod. It's rated to hold up to 5 kg (11 lbs), but since I don't currently have any camera gear that adds up to that mass, I haven't tested it. What I DO put on it feels solidly and securely held, though.Of course this tripod, with its much beefier construction, is not as light as the Gorillapod Hybrid, and the legs are not as thin, but it's still small enough that it fits easily and unobtrusively into a backpack. You'll notice it's there, but it's definitely not a bother. So by now I guess it should be clear that I really like the thing. It's not a telescoping Gitzo or anything like that, but it was never meant to be either. I recommend it highly.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus - Flexible Mini-Tripod:
I really like the durable design. I have been using it with my AF100 and G2 for video and photography. It is a little harder to use it on severely awkward surfaces with the AF100 because the camera is heavier than a DSL, but I was pretty surprised at how well it actually holds up. I bought the 492LCD Micro Ball Head to use with this and it is a great combination, just make sure you buy an adapter as well like the Pearstone 1/4-20 F to SHOE MOUNT F ADAPTER - PEAFF1420. The only complaint that I have is that when using with an adapter to mount the little Manfrotto tripod head, the screw doesn't screw in very far to the 1/4" adapter. This worries me a little bit because I have an expensive camera sitting on top of it. But if you're screwing it directly into a camera, it screws in plenty far enough and seems to be durable.

Handy little tripod for those hard to reach places. The build is very solid and the legs are very versatile. The item shipped without the 3/8 adapter but the manufacturer sent me the piece in the mail free of charge!

I boutght because a normal size tripod or a monopod is too big for me to carry all day long visiting museums, buildings ...
But this gorillapod focus is perfect, it fits into my camera bag or a normal backpad perfectly. And it isn`t too heavy. Is possible to buy the gorillapod ballhead but if you are used to oder brand is a the perfect choice too. And in BH is no so expensive than in other countries.

I have only used this as a tabletop tripod on a handful of ocassions so far. I am glad I finally purchased a tripod of some sort. It has helped a great deal to be able to include myself in the pictures with others without having to ask someone else to take them for me.
This is extremely sturdy, I have no fear that it will handle my gear (Nikon D90 + 18-200mm) and future larger lenses without any problems. The only con to it is that it is so sturdy that it is a little difficult to manipulate the legs when trying to wrap it around anything. I understand that for the weight it will need to handle that's a good thing, however I will need to workout to strengthen my hands in order to contort the legs. Other than that I have enjoyed the purchase.
