Having used two x800 series printers for two years, the x900 series is a major improvement. The printing speed is excellent, but the best feature is not wasting half of my day running nozzle checks. It cleans itself about twice a day as necessary, and eliminates the need to print nozzle checks. The self maintaining aspect is wonderful for keeping productivity up. The colors are dead on accurate, any color difference is user error. All you need is a colorimeter for your monitor and the right paper profiles and you are good to go. It works perfectly right out of Lightroom using the Epson driver(included). The driver is so good that buying a RIP for this printer may be unnecessary for most users.

The print sharpness on this printer is the best I have ever seen. The built in "shelf" is a life saver when switching out heavy rolls of paper, and the spool design is a real break through for ease of use.

If you have an x800 series epson, or canon ipfx200, this is a real step up.

The driver has an issue that Epson is aware of for this printer and they have not fixed the issue. I have never seen a driver not able to make the proper size of print in the proper location before. It makes the printer almost useless to me. I have not had good experiences working with Epson customer service nor technical support.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Printer:

I'm a commercial and fine art photographer selling prints thru my website. I needed a printer that could handle 40x60" and this is the only printer I considered. I previously lived in Los Angeles and did digital image consulting for photographers and businesses that worked with photography. I actually setup a couple of these while I was there, so the choice for me was crystal clear. It doesn't clog like the older versions did, and it prints spectacular color with incredible detail. And it's fast. ....Since I knew the basics, it was an easy setup.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Printer:

I received this printer in February '13 after doing several months of research on both Epson and Canon printers. I previously used an Epson R2880 with an NEC 2090UXi display, various versions of Photoshop and was very satisfied with the prints I got from that set up (monitor calibration is critical). I wanted to have a larger format printer so after my research I selected the Epson 9900.

Being a semiprofessional landscape photographer (it's not my day job) I can only relate my experience and what I think about it.

With this I also purchased an NEC PA271W SV display and nVidia Quadro 2000 with a display port connector (I still can't get over the difference I see with 10 bit color). Again, calibrating the monitor is essential.

I watched several videos on YouTube about assembly and installation of the printer and found them useful. The instructions with the printer, to me, were also useful and unambiguous. I followed them in order and used the USB connection to my computer. Setup was easy and uneventful though it did take more than a minute of two! I forced myself to be patient.

After setup I did some test prints with some of my images and found the print set up in Photoshop to be very familiar Epson style with the addition of a few more options.

After a few days I tried a demo version of a very popular RIP designed for photographers and could not discern any difference between the prints from the RIP and those using Epson's driver and Epson's profiles. I used Epson's Ultra-Premium Luster roll and sheet, Velvet Fine Art, Hot Press and Cold Press and Exhibition Fiber papers. I also tested with various Hahnemuhle and Innova papers; I liked the Epson papers better. Changing paper rolls is simple and it handles 8.5x11 sheets very well.

To sum up, I use Photoshop CS 6, print directly from Photoshop using Epson's driver, Epson's profiles and get prints better than I've seen before and as close to what I see on monitor as I think is possible. Sunsets and sky blue are hard for any printer to duplicate and this printer seems dead on both. All I can say is it's a very good printer, meets all my expectations and I don't have any buyer's remorse. I still have my R2880 but haven't powered it on since February. Hundreds of prints later and more ink I really like this printer.

By the way I was able to print about 90 to 100 prints up to 23x36" from the set up ink tanks before I had to change one. And one comment to Epson: please start selling Velvet Fine Art on rolls.

      Setup instructions are defective

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Printer:

We've only had the printer a short time and are still getting to know it. We're having some troubles with banding, but we expected we'd have some shakedown issues so we're not upset about the banding -- so far. ;-)

Having said that, the setup instructions in the manual if followed exactly -- as I did -- omit a critical bit of information.

BEFORE you start the process of charging the ink cartridges, you MUST load some paper!

The instructions in my copy of the manual say that the printer may not display "Ready" until paper is loaded instead of saying that paper MUST be loaded.

I didn't load the paper seeing that there was a chapter about paper coming up in the manual and I knew that the charging process would take 15 minutes. So, I figured I'd use the time to read about paper and how to load it.

      That was a mistake.

When I "started" the ink charging process, the machine made noises and the head moved back and forth, but the display kept complaining about missing left and right ink maintenance tanks and the process never got to completion even after leaving the printer on overnight.

I called Epson tech support and gave them the description above. The tech thought that the system board was bad and overnighted one to me. He never asked me if I'd loaded paper into the machine.

A tech showed up a couple of days later and the first thing he noticed was the absence of paper in the printer. He took a single sheet of B size copy paper and placed it in portrait orientation with the right edge of the paper aligned with the vertical black stripe at the right side of the paper slot.

Without making any other change to my setup, he then started the ink charging process and the machine made a COMPLETELY different and much louder sound like a blower coming on and the display changed to say that the ink charging process had begun.

The tech stayed until the machine was charged and he printed a test sheet from his laptop. He also told us about the machine, so we certainly benefited from his visit, but what a waste of everyone's time and resources over a missing sheet of paper!

According to the tech, most people pay somebody to install this printer, so the missing info in the manual isn't an issue since those folks set up the machine from experience rather than the manual. But, if you are going to set the machine up yourself, make sure that you load paper into the printer before you begin the ink charging process or you will disappear down the same rabbit hole that I did.

      One more unrelated comment:

If you are going to print on transparencies, be advised that there is another version of this printer which has white ink for use with transparencies. The 9900 cannot use the white ink.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Printer:

Absolutely incredible printer that reproduces colors perfectly. I rather easily synced the monitor to the printer and was delighted at the incredible detail of the prints. I primarily use this printer for photographs, so the concern was whether the sharpness and colors would accurately translate monitor to printer and was shocked to have it be dearly identical or better in most cases in print, the dynamic range of the printer itself very well is better than the monitor. Quite easy to use, maintains itself mostly.

I use this printer for large scale giclee canvas prints and it is truly amazing for a medium scale wholesale art business. Print quality is great. Setup is easy. I had heard negative things about the paper cutter but i have yet to have any problems with this feature. Highly recommend this printer.

This is the next step for me, previously had the 7900 24" printer. It is excellent, produces prints that are consistent, and good color. I am still learning to understand that the print will never look like what is on my screen, given that screen is back lite etc. But producing prints that I like and my customers like has become inspiring. It is precise, easy to use, just wish the ink didn't cost so much. The way I work is to do smaller proofs before going full size, so I eat up paper and ink perhaps more than a more experiences person does. Otherwise no complaints.

I have had this printer for over a year now, and could not be happier! I use it for fine art prints and canvas printing. I have the 221BW Nec monitor calibrated (very important!) and the color match from monitor to print just amazes me everytime. When you show somebody a print, my favorite paper is Epson Hot Press, you just watch their eye buggin, jaw dropping stare as they are in disbelief that just came out of the printer! I have had no issues whatsoever with problems or clogging. I really dont know how the print could get any better?

The biggest worry was getting the printer up a flight of stairs! Had to hire a separate squad of (beefy) movers to do so as the printer is dropped off curbside in an enormous box. Otherwise, the set-up and operational instructions are clear [...]. This won't be a workhorse printer; using it to make digital fine art. Already wish I'd ordered the 60+ inch! One thing you'll have to buy separately before set-up is a USB A/B cable (I got a 12' which works fine though 10' is suggested) -- to get connected to your computer. I've switched out 3 different roles of paper / canvas with little problem (yet one of the roll's cardboard tubes was a bit tight; won't sit properly in paper holder.) One more thing: if you've got this set up at home, curious pets will love to sleep in / claw / destroy the paper catcher bin below the machine; I removed it.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Printer:

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Printer:

Pros: Installation was seamless using their installation CD to my PC. Right out of the box it installed, and profiles were immediately available to CS4 (I use CS4 to control color). Printed on both sheet and roll paper without having to call a help line, or reinstall anything. Color quality is fantastic, but I haven't used anything other than Epson, so can't compare. Prints quickly, and the cutter and catch basin work well. Stand was very easy to construct, and the printer was very easy to bolt to the stand (but see cons below). Stand has wheels, so it is easy to move around if necessary. B&H was knowledgeable, took their time to talk to me on the phone as I was shopping for this, efficient, and well priced for their service and reliability. Incredibly exciting to see that first 44X60 print being printed. No Info: Haven't used the Matte or B&W components yet so no comment. Not long enough to be able to evaluate nozzle clogging, but I did shut off Auto Nozzle check immediately in order to save ink.[...]

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Printer:

225 lbs of sheer large-format madness. Hurts the wallet a bit, especially when a full 700ml refill runs a good $2.5k (make sure you get it when you buy the printer! Runs out of the initial setup cartridges real quick). That said, stunning colors, great for fine art, but heavy and tough to move. Honestly though, you should probably be expecting that for a such a killer manufacturing device.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Printer:

I've have not used this printer a lot yet because I've had a tough tie getting full in sets due to availability. When I finally (about a month) got a full inset (very little is included in the original cartridges) and was able to print. There seems to be issues with how the drivers work in relation to what the final print looks like. When talking with Epson Tech. Support it just seems to be the way things are. It just is not what I thought I was getting for sure.

There are other issues as well, but this is the one that's a deal breaker for me.
