Comments about Zacuto ZM-3 Zicromount III:

It would get 5 stars, except for the usual Zacuto price. They make solid gear, but they're generally selling to low budget/indie filmmakers, not the latest $100M epic, so I don't think it's right that a lot of their gear is priced closer to Arri. Also, as an American company, I don't expect to pay imported prices like for European equipment. It's a buick, not a Benz.

That being said, this is awesome and solid. Okay, it's sort of a Benz. I wish I bought this a long time ago (along with a Zamerican arm) instead of buying a cheapie Israeli arm (that broke after a year).

I hate twisting monitors to put them on and off (and I do this fairly often, using a daylight bright monitor instead of a viewfinder for almost all digital shoots now -- a habit I picked up from doing steadicam)...so since I have to attach/detach monitors fairly often, even shot to shot going between sticks and steadi, it's very nice to do it quickly, not awkwardly (like twisting an expensive daylight bright monitor around a little quarter twenty connection!), and repeatably. (I feel like 1/4-20 threads are a little small for repeated and continuous twisting---they are small enough that I have cross threaded them sometimes in a hurry---or it just gets tedious to do carefully and safely.) WIth this, I do it once for whatever monitor I'm using, and then don't have to mess with it again no matter how many times I reconfigure things.

Comments about Zacuto ZM-3 Zicromount III:

We use this to attach our 7" LCD monitor to the zamerican arm from Zacuto. Where the original frequently spun free on the 1/4-20 bolt under torque, the vinyl "teeth" on the ZM-3 hold it in place much more securely.

Only four stars because it would be perfect if the teeth were adjustable to accommodate a broader range of bezel depths. The 1/4-20 bolt is in a channel allowing some tweaking. If the teeth were separately adjustable (i.e. mini pressure plate with hex bolt) the mount would keep the form factor small, but accommodate even larger frames to wrap the teeth around.

Also, the 1/4-20 pin is flat head, while the red locking wing nut is hex. It would be nice if both were the same head type to avoid requiring two types of tools.

Comments about Zacuto ZM-3 Zicromount III:

I bought the Zicromount along with the Zamerica arm so I could mount my field monitor to my HDSLR rig. I'm assuming most people are using it this way.

I was kind of psyched to get this, despite it being just a fiddly little connecting bit of gear. Zacuto seem good at marketing and have really done a great job of positioning themselves as the quality company for HDSLR accessories. They make expensive products that enjoy a great reputation, so I was expecting total perfection. That's not quite what I found, although it's close.

The tynes, the two fork-like projections that are meant to steady your monitor and prevent it from swiveling, are not exactly even. Maybe it's just my copy, but with the one I got it's impossible to adjust them to be perfectly even with each other when they're also both upright (as they're supposed to be; the tynes are adjusted by screwing/unscrewing them, which means you adjust them in increments of 360 degree rotation). The result of this is, the Zicromount mounts to my monitor just a hair crooked, on an admittedly slight angle. I want to stress that this doesn't effect the way it works in the least, but I'm 'retentive' as they say and it bothers me just a little bit.

My other gripe concerns cosmetics: I hate the logo badges. There's a bulbous badge on either side of this tiny little thing. Totally unnecessary, and very distracting. Of course Zacuto aren't the only ones guilty of this kind of crazy logo-plastering; when I set up my HD rig there are so many bloody logos popping out at me I'm not sure if I'm a photographer, or a NASCAR driver. Anyway-- lose the logos, please.

Despite my rather insignificant complaints this piece works just as it should. The design is super, it feels solid, and I love having my monitor on a quick release; if I had to screw/unscrew it from the noga arm every time I think I'd start to get cranky. If the tynes were even, I'd give it five stars; and if they took off the badges I'd look for a way to give it six.

Designed to mount underneath a monitor and then onto an articulating arm. Extremely well made. Not cheap but you'll have this forever..it's that durable.
