The EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens from Canon lens is a wide-angle prime lens that provides sharp imaging and impressive performance at all settings. Its wide maximum aperture of f/1.4 allows for effective low-light photography and its circular aperture and narrow depth of field provide pleasing background blur. It is ideal for photojournalists, landscape and event photographers, and anyone who enjoys taking images from a wider perspective.

This version "II" improves greatly over its predecessor with the addition of two high-precision aspherical elements, which correct aberration including curvature of field and distortion. Chromatic aberration common in wide-angle shooting is also reduced by the inclusion of two UD lenses, which ensure optimum image quality and corner-to-corner detail. The lens elements have anti-reflective SWC (Sub-Wavelength Coating) that minimizes ghosting and flaring across the lens surface, regardless of the angle with which light enters.

The EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM lens features Canon's near-silent Ultra Sonic Motor (USM), which provides fast auto-focusing with full-time manual override. The floating internal focus system also helps maintain image quality throughout the focal range. As an L-series lens, it is designed to withstand the demands of professional usage and features Canon's advanced weather and dust sealing.

Fast f/1.4 Maximum Aperture
A wide f/1.4 maximum aperture allows this lens to be very effective in low light situations and provides shallow depth of field focusing.
Aspherical and UD Lens Elements
Two aspherical and two UD lens elements minimize chromatic aberrations.
SWC (Sub Wavelength Coating)
The anti-reflective SWC (Sub Wavelength Coating) differs from conventional coatings by using a much finer structure, which minimizes ghosting and flaring across the lens surface, regardless of the angle with which light enters or exits.
Ring-Type USM Autofocus Motor
Canon's very best autofocus mechanisms are in place, permitting full-time manual focusing override without requiring a switchover from AF to MF mode. The USM (Ultrasonic Motor) is fast and virtually silent which is ideal for discreet shooting and when using this lens to record video. The floating rear focusing system maintains performance across the entire focus range.
L-Series
Canon's "L-Series" designation indicates that this lens meets their highest quality standards with excellent color reproduction and edge to edge sharpness. Lens elements are made from lead-free glass and a tight seal structure ensures excellent dust and moisture-proof performance

If you do thorough research, you know what you're getting when you buy this lens. Like any professional tool, it has its strong and weak points. Aside from getting a faulty lens from the factory, anyone disappointed with this lens because it doesn't do what they need, should have bought a lens that does.As for performance: I use this primarily for astrophotography timelapse and it knocks the socks off anything else I've ever used. Open wide to 1.4 and you'll see some fairly strong vignetting at the edges (on a full frame sensor) at least a full stop if not a bit more. If you close down to 2.8, the vignetting is easily manageable in post. At 2.8 this is where the lens shines, definitely my favorite wide prime. As with every wide prime that I've used, the stars on outer edges of the frame go oval shaped, but it's not distracting. I also do some video documentary work. The day after I got it, I shot a surgical medevac to a military base from a local hospital that had lost power. I decided to try it out for interviews instead of the 50mm...I was blown away, the interview was gorgeous. The close distance to the camera can be a bit uncomfortable for some subjects, but if they don't mind, it's perfect. This lens will be in my bag for every interview that I shoot from now on. The focus ring is unusually tight, I wasn't expecting this, but it turned out to be perfect for fine-tuning the focus. It also makes harder to overshoot your focus point while shooting video. This is a lens worth getting, keeping and shooting on.The attached image was the first shot out of the box. Taken at an airfield with fairly heavy light pollution.

It's really hard to say how I'd rate this lens, as the copy that I got wouldn't focus correctly beyond about 9 inches - it'd always frontfocus beyond that. As a lens that I could use fine during manual focus (@f/1.4), though, it served its purpose, and pretty well, as a fast, wide weather-sealed prime. I'm not a huge fan of the bokeh, and much prefer the 50 L (my favorite Canon lens), but in terms of a wide prime (which I'm looking for) there's not much else that'll beat it.

Comments about Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens:

Purchased to replace a 16-35 2.8L II. Loved that lens, but traded it as I've wanted to use a prime set up with my 5D MkIII consisting of 24, 50, 135. It's been great combo for me so far. I've only had the 24 1.4L II for a week now but the sharpness is incredible and seems to be as sharp as my 135 2.0L! It is soft at 1.4 as many reviews have said, but excelled in close up portrait test shots and landscape.

        Super sharp lens

Comments about Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens:

This lens is great and the bokeh is smooth; additionally, the lens is quite sharp even when stopped down to f1.4 the only downside is that it may be just a little to wide, a 28mm would be prefered. However the Canon 28mm f1.8 Iis not as sharp as this lens until stopped down to f2.8. Great lens, just wish Iit was a bit wider

Comments about Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens:

I shoot with two 5D Camera bodies at weddings and this baby stays on one of the two bodies at all times.

If you've never shot wide at a low aperture, you don't know what you're missing. This is the absolute best storytelling lens for weddings and serves me throughout an entire wedding day.

I find it essential, particularly at the beginning of the day, as I so often find myself in a "bride getting ready" room where I can not situate myself to get good shots with a 50mm lens. Sometimes these rooms are so small that even with backing up against the wall, a 50mm just won't cut it.

This lens is also great for getting the big room and venue shots.

With the lens correction features in Lightroom, I could even shoot portraits with this lens. If I was a wedding photographer just starting out, this is the first lens I would purchase.

At first I didn't 24mm as a prime length, but as I got into photography more and more, I found out that 24mm is actually an ideal range for photography.
I've finally decided to purchase this lens over 35mm, I am absolutely in love with it!
f/1.4 at 24mm is very unique and outstanding!
                          Lens construction is very solid.

Comments about Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens:

I consider myself an avid photographer. I currently own a Canon Xti + Tamron 17mm-50mm f/2.8 lens. I also own a Canon PowerShot s95. I am extremely happy with both cameras. Because my wife and I recently had our first born child, I started searching for a low light camera + lens combo that is capable of autofocusing during video, which the s95 cannot.

My search brought me to the 70D + EF 24mm f/1.4 II USM lens combo. I'm not going to restate all the excellent attributes of the camera and lens. I took some amazing natural light / low light pictures and video of my daughter with the 70D + EF 24mm f/1.4.

However, I couldn't see myself lugging that thing around everywhere. I can put the s95 in my pocket; can't do that with the 70D + EF 24mm f/1.4. The more I thought about it, I realized that the hefty 70D + EF 24mm f/1.4 would get in the way of me taking the pictures and video I want to take. Simply put, I upgraded the wrong camera. I should've bought a replacement for the Canon PowerShot s95.

So I sent the 70D + EF 24mm f/1.4 back and purchased the Sony RX100 II. I've always been a Canon loyalist. But I decided to buy the Sony because of all the rave reviews I've read; it should meet my needs (hasn't arrived yet). But I haven't completely abandoned Canon; I also picked up a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM that I'll use on the Canon Xti body.

Bottom line: the EF 24mm f/1.4 II USM is a fantastic lens. But to justify the expense, make sure you're going to use it to its fullest potential. Something like a Canon EF 28 mm f/1.8 USM may be just what you need. Another lens that has caught my eye is the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM.

Comments about Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens:

Wonderful lens. Very sharp. Wide aperture enables low ISO shooting in low light. Very little distortion and a very handy size for architecture, landscape and scenery and close quarter street shooting. Very fast focus (it's in focus before you notice it). No IS but I found I could hand hold down to 1/20th and get sharp photos if I concentrated.

Comments about Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens:

Great glass right here. I picked this up because I needed the fast glass and it is the fastest wide that Canon offers. The great thing about this too, is that the minimum focus distance from the lens is 3 inches.

At f/1.4 and 3 inches from the lens, you get a sliver of DOF. The bokeh is smooth, round, and amazing! Since you can focus 3 inches from the lens and such shallow Depth of Field, that it can be used for Macro Photography [I know it is not a 1:1 magnification, but still the content into the camera has that Macro look]

I have noticed that because the DOF is so shallow, that Auto Focusing in low light is pretty difficult. I've had great luck using the live view and manually focusing.

This lens is so good, that I just wished I got this sooner. Good news too: This lens now ships with the center pinch style lens cap!!!! About time Canon!

Comments about Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens:

I bought this lens to add to my prime lens collection and to use for wedding receptions but am already using it for portrait/lifestyle sessions and everyday use. I was considering the 24-70 but after renting both to try, I thought the 24 was more clear and focused better and I wanted to stick with prime for quality and low light capability. Also considered the 35mm 1.4 but decided on the 24mm for my first wide angle.

Great wide angle on my Canon T4i, shows more of my subject in the photo. I was able to get some really nice photos of Rockefella Center Christmas Tree, and Angels. Just wish L series lenses where IS. If you don't hold camera as steady as possible, some photos can blurr.

This is the sharpest glass you can buy. I am a DSLR cinematographer. I use this with a Canon 5D Mark III and this I my primary lens for steady-cam tracking, establishing shots, and wide shots. This lens is also fantastic for photography. The sharpness is amazing.

As a canon shooter, I wanted to pick up a fast and wide prime for my FF. This lens is very sharp with only minimal distortion. (Which is in every wide lens.) I really love using this for evening shooting, landscapes, sky shots, and as an everyday walk around lens. The 24L II is the best wide lens I've used.

I was really up in the air between this and the 28 1.8 which is also a great lens but if your really looking to top quality this is the way to go. The bokeh on this lens is superb being that it is a wide angle it gives so much more depth to your shots and is very sharp at 1.4 . Some people talk about vignetting which I don't experience much personally but the lens is fantastic build quality is one of the best I own ! Will always have this lens with me
