Batteries are required but not included with this item. Please be sure to purchase batteries for this item.
The Canon Battery Grip BG-E6 is an optional battery grip designed specifically for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. It allows users to load a choice of one or two LP-E6 battery packs. With two packs, the already-impressive battery life is doubled, compared to using a single LP-E6 pack in-camera. This is especially useful when taking advantage of the camera's movie mode or Live View mode - operating modes that use more power. In addition, with the included BGM-E6 Battery Magazine, you can alternatively also run the camera off six AA batteries.
Furthermore the BG-E6 provides full vertical shooting controls, which can be independently turned on or off as the photographer needs to enhance camera handling, especially for shooting vertical pictures.
Note: The battery grip BG-E4 for the previous EOS 5D is not compatible with the EOS 5D Mark II camera

This battery grip is a must have if you do studio work, portraits, sports, or travel with your camera. Not only does it allow you to easily use your camera in portrait orientation by giving you all the buttons you need on the grip, but it also doubles your battery life be holding 2 batteries.
The grip fits nice and tight on the camera and you'll forget it's a separate piece. It makes it so easy to turn your camera sideways and shoot pictures giving you easy access to all of the buttons that are normally at the top right of the camera so you don't have to have your hands in a funky position reaching over the camera.
One other nice thing about the grip is that if you are out and your batteries die, the grip will allow you to use AA batteries instead of the Canon LP-E6 batteries. This can be a saver.

Okay, so I think it goes without saying (especially given the below reviews) that a battery grip is extremely helpful. I love grips; I've installed them on every one of my cameras and I never regret it. But what about *THIS* battery grip?Bottom line: Not worth it! It feels cheaply made. It's broken twice in the six months I've owned it. First off, the thumb wheel to screw the grip onto the tripod mount of the camera uses a complex system of inner gears, and they're ALL MADE OF PLASTIC. Which means if you crank down too hard on the grip to put it on or take it off, the gears shatter and your grip is stuck on your camera. You then get to pay for the privilege of shipping your camera to Canon and getting it repaired ($50 repair for my particular case). In my case, the gears broke halfway through taking the grip off, breaking the electrical connection, yet not far enough that I could work tools in there to fully remove the grip. Result: a few plastic gears in the grip rendered the entire camera completely unusable."I'll just put it on and leave it on!" declares you. Unfortunately, that won't work either, because the thing loosens over time. So much for the complex gear-driven system that's supposed to... be better than the direct-drive system used on all the other grips out there? For comparison, the cheap knockoff grip I had for my Rebel XT is six years, two rainstorms, a dunking in the river, and countless rock-smashings in, and still going strong (I will admit there might be some gaff tape involved in that).Secondly, the shutter button on the camera has two very satisfying 'levels' of feel to it -- the half-press to expose and the full press to fire the shutter. The button on the grip doesn't have that same feedback, and it makes it hard to work with. Off, Half-on, and full-on are just three arbitrary places in how hard you squeeze the shutter. This would all be okay if the thing were maybe half the price that it is. But at this pricing level, go with a cheap knockoff. You're not getting any extra quality here.I would then take that money you save and buy the Canon brand batteries. Tried other brands, and after a year of use, *the combined run time of all five of my third-party batteries was half the run-time of my one Canon-brand battery.* So I decided to do it right this time and go brand-name. Batteries did not disappoint. Grip did.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
This accessory comes in handy for longer shoots and portraits. The ability to use two batteries helps me rest easy when there's no time to stop and charge a battery. You can easily get all the shooting done that you need wihtout having to think twice about your battery charge. On top of that, it makes portrait shooting extremely comfortable. Before I used this the wrist of my right hand would always feel a little tweeked at the end of a portrait shoot but this grip definitely helps me avoid that altogether.
The grip is built well, being made out of magnesium alloy like the 5D Mark II body. I appreciate that Canon didn't skimp on build quality with this accessory.
With that being said, this puppy does add some extra weight to my camera and especially considering it holds two batteries. The added weight doesn't bother me, although it could be a consideration for others.
I believe the price could be better, considering third-party grips offered by B&H cost less. In the end, I'm sure the build quality and reliability will justify having the Canon branded version over third-party versions.
If you need more battery life or a more comfortable vertical shooting position for your hands, get this today.

I purchased the BG-E6 for my Canon 5d 2. My 5D gear was stolen so this is a replacement. The hand grip is handy if you shoot a lot of vertical shots but also as battery back up. I did a lot of wedding and the extra battery I the grip came in handy extending my shoot time and made the camera look bigger and more professional. I have not used an off brand grip but would consider it if price is an issue.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
I have used Canon gear for literally decades. I have a grip on my old A2 and it makes it easy to get shots vertically and horizontally. I have a Mark 5D II and added the grip this week. What a difference it makes. Not only does it allow vertical and horizontal shots to be made easier, it provides additional gripping surface and control, especially with longer-heavier lenses. On a lesser note, it looks cool, makes getting the camera out of the bag easier, draws admiring comments from friends and provides a place for a second battery, extending the length of shooting without recharging. I have done three photo shoots and hardly had a draw on the battery. Great Job Canon!!!

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
I simply can't get comfortable shooting with a camera that doesn't have the full size body or body grip. I've been shooting for a couple of years with a 7D with a grip attached. I bought the 5D as a second camera to carry and decided to try shooting for awhile without the grip. I really struggled, especially with big lenses. Among the problems I encountered, one was simply holding the camera level.
I ordered the grip, put it on the camera and am adapting to it very well. Swapping rapidly between the 7D and 5D on a hike has some challenges, but at least both cameras fit securely in my hand and that helps lessen the variability.
If a camera feels too small to you, I strongly endorse the grip. If you get used to shooting with a camera that size, I suspect you will have trouble going back to a smaller body.

Perfect addition for any Canon body. Vertical shooting with controls. Two battery capacity. Shoot thousands of images all day long. Mounts solidly to my 5D MKII. Wouldn't do without a Battery Grip for my camera body; and neither should you. One day I'll spring for 1D with an integral grip, but in the meantime I'll always add a battery grip. Besides, it's makes you camera look big, like 1D. :)

"Fitament" was perfect and the product was just what I expected. Prefer to stay with Canon products - have had trouble in the past with other brands fiting and working properly. Controls are well-placed and easy to use - very similar to my 1D. Haven't noticed any of the breakage trouble reported by other users - maybe because my installation is permanent. I won't be taking it on/off constantly.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
I am on scene during every type of weather conditions to document incident scenes as they happen. The Canon Battery grip gives me that extra secure handle to hang on to even in the coldest or wettest weather. The ability to get the picture using the built in release on the battery grip allows me more multiple angles and also various situations to get that shot. The fact that the Battery grip has a secure sealed attachment is also nice when the smoke is thick, the snow is blowing, or rain is falling, and nothing is getting into the battery area. The Battery grip is also a perfect size allowing it to fit into my equipment box without requiring extra height. It was also a hugh help to be able to secure the cameras built in battery door right on the battery grip. There is nothing worse than trying to remember where you put that little camera battery door when you want to re attach it to the camera. Finally, it is light weight, you can hold the camera in postion without felling like your holding a weight in your hand.
