  • Manual Focusing Through Viewfinder
  • Precision Focusing in Low Light

This Eg series Super Precision Matte Eg-S Interchangeable Focusing Screen from Canon provides easier manual focusing through your viewfinder on subjects in low light when using lenses with a wide aperture between f/1.8 to f/2.8.

This "S" type focusing screen works by decreasing the focus of the slightly out-of-focus areas around your in-focus subject for a sharper contrast.

Compatible with Canon EOS 5D Mk II and 6D
Not recommended for ordinary zoom lenses with maximum aperture slower than f/2.8 as the screen will appear dark and grainy
Focusing screens are delicate and should only be handled using the included gripping tool for installation

When you really get into photography, it's the little things that really count. This is one of those little things. When you upgrade to a faster lens, and especially a manual focus (MF) lens, you will need this focusing screen to take advantage of the faster lenses' increased precision and focusing peculiarites.

Some background: the stock screen is meant to provide an image which is more or less in focus, which aids composition when using autofocus (AF). In contrast, the Eg-S does not refine the focus, therefore allowing the viewer to determine where the focal point is sans AF. Also this screen eliminates the sparkle/dazzle I've seen using the stock focusing screen in the 5dmkii when trying to focus manually. The Eg-S lets in slightly more light, which enables MF in challenging conditions, but if you don't use MF, you won't see much difference with this screen.

It does darken the viewfinder (quite a bit in some situations) for lenses slower than f4, so if you MF with those lenses you're better off getting to know the stock focusing screen.

It's not a split-screen or mesh focus system like on older SLR cameras. There are no focusing aids other than the improved viewfinder image, so if your eyes aren't focusing the shot will still be off. That said, if you really look through the viewfinder when taking a photo and take a second or two to compose, this focusing screen will help a lot.

Nobody gave me any money to write this rave review. Some things are what they are, and this is one of them. No kidding.

Canon only recomends that this focus screen be used with F2.8 or wider lens. I have to say listen to Canon. A signifcant reduction in light coming thru the view finder even with a 2.8 lens. Remeber to set the screen type in the camera setting or exposer will be off. I realy wish Canon would make a split prism screen like the ones from the old manule focus days. From Ziess web page I understant third parties are making split prism view screens. I will investigate not will to buy the 1D for this feature. At the end of the day I am not sure that it realy addes value.

Comments about Canon Super Precision Matte Eg-S Interchangeable Focusing Screen:

Almost like focusing your old 35mm again. You can see what's really going on. What you want in focus gets in focus. Way better than auto focus for still life landscapes and relaxed portrait sessions. I have an f3.5 18mm Zeiss and in good light even then this screen is helpful getting accurate focus, especially when you are working up close. For the money you can't go wrong especially if your lenses are f2 and wider. Watch a youtube video before you install this thing, but it really is easy and just do exactly as the directions tell you.

Used it with my Carl Zeiss 35mm Distagon F/2 - got it hoping it would make manual focusing easier and faster BUT I ended up returning the product because It didn't make it all that easy. I focus better with my default focusing screen better then with Eg-S. Maybe it's just me. Too bad Canon doesn't have split prism for 6D

Comments about Canon Super Precision Matte Eg-S Interchangeable Focusing Screen:

If you're trying to manual focus a wide aperture lens (f/2 and wider) at close to medium focusing distances, you need this screen. The standard screen will only show depth-of-field up to f/2.8, so beyond that you're essentially guessing. This brings the visible depth-of-field down to about 1.8, which is much better.

The trade off is the EG-S "super precision" screen will darken your viewfinder somewhat. This isn't really a problem with wide-aperture lenses, but if you have slower zooms you may have some trouble in darker shooting conditions. It's possible but not practical or advisable to switch screens on the fly (they damage very easily), so that's something to keep in mind.

In sum, if you have fast glass and you're shooting even relatively close, buy this and you'll be happier.

When using fast and/or manual focus lenses this is indespensible. Really makes a difference and is a great aid in manula focusing. My Zeiss lenses are much easier to focus now, especially in lower light.

Comments about Canon Super Precision Matte Eg-S Interchangeable Focusing Screen:

I bought this screen to focus my canon 85/1.2 and 50/1.0 manually wide open on canon 6D. Right from the beginning I found out that this screen does not make it easier to focus manually as compared to the standard screen. At least, this was my immediate and clear subjective impression. Then, I did a blind test by taking a large number of photos, half with manual focus and half of them taken with autofocus. Surprisingly, with autofocus on I have got sharper photos in 100% of cases. Unfortunately, my conclusion is that this screen is useless. I give it one star for the fact, that with the lenses I use regularly, I do not need to change back. The shipping was fast and careful.

Comments about Canon Super Precision Matte Eg-S Interchangeable Focusing Screen:

I do not know why I waited so long to pick one of these up. It makes a huge difference when using lenses that are faster then f2.8 and has greatly improved my hit rate when using my Canon 85mm f1.2, Canon 50mm f1.4 and Lensbaby 3G lenses. It does make the viewfinder using slower lenses (f4.0 etc..) a fair bit darker, but this is not an issue for me. If you have any lenses faster than 2.8 and not many slower lenses, then you need this screen.

I use this with some Mamiya 645 lenses on a Canon 6D. Since the lenses are f2.8 they are right at the aperture limit of the focus screen's usefulness and the gain in clarity is small but still useful. The view is pretty dark beyond f5.6.

Swapped out the screen for this on my 6D last night. Very quick and easy process. Very noticeable difference using my 85mm 1.2. Depth of field is much shallower and allowed me to get consistently accurate manual focus on still subjects. Will be helpful for 35mm 1.4 as well. The only negative is that viewfinder was much darker using my 40mm 2.8 granted it was in my dimly lit living room.

Am excited to use this since the 6D has a very good center focusing point but not so strong outer ones. Was getting tired of having to focus/recompose all the time and missing focus when shooting wide open.

Highly recommended only if you primarily use lenses f/2 and faster.

it does what it says it shows true depth of field however it cant replace a split prism and micro-prism collar.

images don't "snap" into focus as older mf screens do, but it is a improvement over the terrible stock screen for sure.

nothing beats Katz eye screens. i only wish they where available to the 5D II and 6D models.

I use this with a 1.6 viewfinder magnifier.

Great improvement in the ability to manual focus with the viewfinder. Images seem to snap into focus at the focusing point.

The light loss in the viewfinder is not as much as I feared either. I often shoot with the 24-105 (f4) and the 200 2.8 with 1.4 extender (f4 as well) and I don't really notice much difference from the stock viewfinder.

this is not a necessary accessory. the focusing screen that comes with your camera will do just as good. Canon needs to come out with a split focus if they want to make a difference.

The easiest install ever. Comes nicely boxed with the tool and you can safely store the old screen.
I can now focus manually with my 24-70/2.8L on a 6D body.
It's good enough that I can correct slight AF errors through the viewfinder.

I use it on a Canon EOS6D with a Hasselblad/Zeiss CB 80mm/f2.8 lens. Maybe my expectation was too high. I don't see much difference w.r.t. the stock screen to be honest, nothing to write home about anyways. Actually, at one point I wondered if somebody had stuffed the stock EG-A II focusing screen in the Eg-S packaging by mistake. I wish. If you are familiar with split screen or microprism focusing screen on good o'l film SLR cameras, this ain't it.

Manual focus is much more accurate. As a glasses wearer, manual focus was usually more difficult. This makes it a bit easier. Also it makes focusing in low light much easier.

If you ever focus manually, this screen makes it a lot easier than the standard Eg-A screen. Its matte finish looks "grainier" and helps the image "snap" into focus better than the fine grain Eg-A screen. However, in dim light its not as much of an advantage since it's darker. And if you've ever used a film camera, you'll wish for a split-image or microprisms.

It works great but there are two obvious black marks on the screen. I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle sending it back to exchange it.
