Comments about Quantum Instruments QF9N Qflash Pilot For Nikon/Fujifilm DSLRs/Film Cameras:

Just like with the Qflash itself, the learning curve to figure out the settings is not easy, but once you take the time to use it, it will impress.

Comments about Quantum Instruments QF9N Qflash Pilot For Nikon/Fujifilm DSLRs/Film Cameras:

I use the Pilot to control my other QFlashes. It is easy to operate. The screen is big and easy to read. The only down side is that the unit is large and I cannot use it with my camera brackets. I will have to use the D-connector or find a bracket that has the clearance.

Comments about Quantum Instruments QF9N Qflash Pilot For Nikon/Fujifilm DSLRs/Film Cameras:

This is a very versitile and powerful controller; well made and reliable as other Quantum equipment. My only criticism is the overall form factor. I understand why they used the same type housing and circuit boards as the trio to save production costs but it seems that it could have been more compact. Otherwise a very nice controller and the Quantum strobes are hard to beat.

Comments about Quantum Instruments QF9N Qflash Pilot For Nikon/Fujifilm DSLRs/Film Cameras:

I am coming to love off-camera flash, and I have found this to be an excellent addition to my kit. Set up some units in a room and control them remotely. Segregate the flashes into groups and give them unique settings AND control them over long distances, through walls, and independently of other IR controllers in a room. You walk around and take pictures while the Pilot frees you up in so many ways.

I also started mixing TRIOs with TD-5s using CFLs (since they're similarly balanced) and the Pilot lets me plant extra lights right where I want them and make for extra contrast or hair lights.

My biggest complaint is that the tension dial that keeps the unit on the hot shoe broke internally. Fortunately the manufacturer is responsive and is taking care of it.

I've also felt that the QTTL logic isn't as good as it should be in low aperture settings (f/1.8 for example), but that's true of TRIOs and Pilots.

Oh and remember that this is RF technology, which is inherently an energy pig, so don't use cheap batteries. It won't die on you suddenly, but you will wear out cheap batteries a lot faster since this thing is regularly broadcasting and receiving.

Comments about Quantum Instruments QF9N Qflash Pilot For Nikon/Fujifilm DSLRs/Film Cameras:

The QF9N is an easy to use product. Just put the supplied 4 AA batteries in and place it on your camera shoe and it is ready to use. I remote linked my QFlash trio with turbo SC to the Qflash pilot QF9, and was able to use my silverdome softbox remotely.
