Impact Sandbags come in a variety of shapes and weights. They are used for securing the bases of light stands and set walls. This Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 5 lb (Orange Cordura) has two wings, to allow draping over light stand legs. Each side of the bag has a hand strap for easy handling and hanging on hooks.
This is an empty sandbag, with a double zippered closure. Fill it with sand or small rocks upon arrival at location, and empty it at the end of the shoot -- no heavy shlepping or high shipping expenses.

Over the last year I've pushed my photography up a notch, in both my personal projects and the photography I do for my employer. That has meant moving into off-camera lighting (Speedlites for now) and the light stands that they need to work properly. These bags are exactly what I need to firmly anchor my light stands and camera tripod. I load EACH SIDE of the bag with 5 pounds of #4 chilled lead shot and get a nicely compact 10 pound weight bag by doing so. These bags are MORE than robust enough to go 100% over their rated 5# load. 5 pounds of the relatively small diameter #4 shot pellets provides just the right amount of fill on each side, not too much, not too little. Yeah, yeah, I know that there are 'issues' with lead. After 5000 years or so the human race is just now waking up to the fact that lead isn't a good substitute for sugar candy. But these bag's compartments are double zippered and I haven't seen a stray pellet yet. Worth noting: I photograph a lot of 20 and 30 somethings and it's a sad fact of life that -at that age- they are very often distracted, careless and (occasionally) just plain stupid. (Maybe they've been lead-poisoned?) Choosing the bright orange coloration for these bags has helped me avoid numerous stumble-bum mishaps already, and if one single Speedlite was thusly spared the bags have paid for themselves!

This bag is sturdy and durable, but too small to be useful with clean sand. If you have bird shot or something else that is heavy, then these make good shot bags. Be sure to use a zip lock bag for the contents so that when the bags get wet, then contents will stay dry and won't mold.

Comments about Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 5 lb (Orange Cordura):
It's a sandbag! It's orange! It's an orange sandbag! It's job is to hold sand or other loose material. It holds the heck out of that loose material.
I use it as a sliding counterweight on a jib so I can rapidly trim the system without carrying small-value weight plates. The sandbag straddles the bar nicely and a velcro tie-wrap secures the whole thing.
The bag material seems sturdy enough. The handle feels solid. The zippers are a little flimsy, but not horrible by any means. I'm happy with my orange sandbag.

I have at least six sandbags ranging from 5 pounds to 25 pounds. Tripods, lightstands... who in their right mind would risk having their gear topple? Invest in some sandbags they're worth the money.

Comments about Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 5 lb (Orange Cordura):
Surprised that this lower cost option bag was sturdy and well stitched. The double zipper design is great and the mechanical operation of the zippers was smooth and easy. Handle is well designed. Put plastic bags inside this bag, then filled with sand. Expected lower price meant less quality. NOT so. Great bag. As good as they get.

Comments about Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 5 lb (Orange Cordura):
Works well with smaller stands for lighting or to hang for extra weight for a tripod. Product is made out of good sturdy material and well made zipper. I used zip-loc bags filled with kitty litter for the filler. Bag weighs in at 4.5 lbs filled with this material.

I have various sizes of this brand; these are the perfect compact sandbags. Double zipper, durable, don't trip over me orange color!
I use heavy chain instead of sand. It's perfect, no mess, dense and compact! The bags are currently loaded with 11 - 15 lbs. of chain and only half full!

Comments about Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 5 lb (Orange Cordura):
Got this to use with light-weight lightstands and a boom. I often use them outdoors and was tired of having every little gust of wind blow them over. The Impact Sandbag was about the cheapest option, but it works very well at adding stability to the stands. Two Sandbags would really be ideal, or maybe if this one held a bit more weight. But overall I've got no complaints - it does the job and looks like it should last.
