Everyone talks about D3X, especially about its price. Well, all I can say is this: if you really are a pro it will pay you back. I pair it with 24mm PC Nikkor, set it to 5:4 ratio and I get architecture shots that would satisfy many large format die-hards. Set it back to FX, pair it with a wide angle lens, and you have a serious work horse for low light photojournalism. Try it in portraiture and you will be amazed at the quality, detail and excellent skin tones. It also has a very pleasant film like grain at 1250-1600 ISO. D3X feels right in your hand, which also transforms into handheld 1/8 without any problems. White balance is decent, way over average in most cases. Jpegs are big enough for most uses and if you need more resolution, check out the detail in 14 bit RAW uncompressed - it's stunning. Generally a very rewarding all round camera with lots of pixel power, but let's make it clear, it's a pro body and is priced like one so if you think an $8000 camera is going to make your hoilday snaps better, think twice and buy a D700, put more RAM in your computer, and enjoy the same for less, because at the end of the next year D3X will be a history in this ever high paced race for pixel power. There's some drawbacks, like enlarge in preview, lack of sensor cleaning, no HD video, or...yeah, the price, [...]

I have just completed an overseas shoot in China and have shot about 6,000 images with both the d3x and d3 and can share some thoughts. Overall I found the d3 much more flexible and versatile mainly because its iso capability surpasses the d3x in every aspect even beggining at 1200 .I found the d3x useful only in about a dozen shots out of those thousands when both were in similiar circumstances and those shots were at 24 m pixels. I regret purchasing this camera for 8k and believe that a more correct price is about 2,800 -3,000 especially in view of the new canon 5d mkii.

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

To put it simply this thing rocks HDR. I have been wanting this thing for 4 years and it has lived up to all the hype. This thing has resolution for days! Not to mention the full 9 frame auto bracketing feature is so very nice. It is very rugged and extremely easy to use. The only real negative I can point out is the weight, but that should be expected with a body like this. I shoot mostly on a tripod anyways so it isn't a huge bother. If you are going to do a lot of hiking or carrying it around I would recommend a chest strap, especially if shooting with larger lenses. I have shot about 1,500 frames with it so far and am amazed at how well the AF works. I have only owned it about a month and am hoping they don't release the D4x too quickly so I am not sad I dropped the money on this. One other thing, if you are doing portrait work I would reccomend the D4 due to much better ISO performance, so much better in low light. Great camera, amazing photos, will instantly make everything you shoot look better. You get what you pay for!

I have just purchased this body and am currently shooting some small stones that will be printed very large format for commercial art. Let me just say that the 24 mp has blown all other images with my D3S away!!

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I am a nature/landscape pohotographer. This camera has phenomenal resolution and incredible low-light performance. The ergonomics are great. I can find no fault with it. Some would say it lacks video which is true. However, I have no need for that capability. I have been saving for this camera for a long time and it exceeds my expectations. Nikon has also reduced the weight as compared to the previous model (D2x).

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I was previously shooting a couple of D700's, a D3s, and a F100, and felt I needed something with a bit more resolution for large size print, without having to use the F100. So I looked at the D800, but I didnt manage to make friends with it. I missed the dedicated AF controls, and the files were simply too large to work with for my use (photo journalism, a lot of on-the-road editing). So what to do? The D600 is way too plastic for my use, and the D4 is hardly a step up form the D3s in pure image quality. So I picked this one, the D3X, and it was worth every penny. It just works, no backtalk, and if you are familiar with the Nikon layout, you already know that the ergonomics are perfect. The resolution is more than most people need for normal use, but if you need to print big, this is the ticket. I have used mine in deserts, salt flats, by the ocean, arctic cold and everything in between. Basically, I will give up long before the camera does. And the image quality is brilliant. Stick top quality optics on it, and off you go. The only drawback in my book is that it is not all that great at higher ISO:s, anything above ISO 400 , and I would rather pick up my D700 or D3s and get better results. I put my old 17-35 2,8 on it, and it was simply not up to par. Only the best will do. And this camera is definitely not forgiving...if you are just an average photographer posing as a pro with a big fancy pro camera, this puppy will call your bluff in a second. Unless you are prepared to put the best glass on it, and unless you already know how to use a cmera like this, save yourself a lot of money and buy something less demanding. With a camera like this, and a top of the line lens on it, you, my frind, are for sure the weakest link...

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I bought this body for wildlife photography to get the full benefits of the Nikon 200-400 f4 lens. My thinking was that the lens is so bulky and heavy that the additional size and weight of the D3X (compared to a D700) would hardly be noticeable. That all turned out to be true.

To my surprise, I find myself carrying this as my everyday body instead of the D700. It feels right in my hand. It's much easier to take vertical (portrait) shots. The shutter vibration seems less. It's built like a tank.

I can see the benefit of the increased resolution and the increase in post processing time from the larger file size is negligible.

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I am a freelance photographer and have used Nikon for over 40 years. I use a D2x a great camera and about a year ago I purchased a D3x . The quality and the resolution are hard to beat. This camera can just about anything with amazing results. I have used canon cameras, no comparison.

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

After a 6+ mo. wait I finally received my D3x. It's truly an amazing machine. I've only been shooting with a few weeks, but the differences between this body and my D700 are substantial. If you're a professional nature/landscape/commerical photographer, this is the camera body for you.

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

A Must have piece of equipment! Until I was regularly shooting with the D3X I didn't know what it was like to be able to do anything I want with a single camera. I've owned Canon's and still shoot with Leaf H-Aptus Systems but This camera is the only one I need. Spectacular Image detail, spot on color, fast, ergonomically brilliant, impressive resolution, 250th Flash sync, creative lighting system, shooting in all kinds of weather without cringing, ISO 1600 low light capability, ISO 100 incredible image detail, dual CF cards, simple tethered capability with PhaseOne & NIKON software...YIKKKKES I"m running out of space here! The only problem is once you have this camera you have no excuses for not getting the shot!

The most powerful machine in the world.... this delivers sharp, well focused images, there is no point to have 10fps if you are going to throw most of the images away because they a re blured as it happens with 5D Mark II, yes, cheap price, but cheap results. As for this, is worth the price you pay for what you get ! If you consider your self a professional, dont hesitate on gear !

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I purchased the D3x as a complementary camera to a D3s which I purchased about 4 months previously. I intend to use the D3x primarily for landscapes and use the D3s for sports, wildlife and or any situation that has challenging lighting conditions. The D3x produces stunning images with great dynamic range. I really cannot find anything negative to say about the D3x.

I use the camera for landscape shots. Images are fantastic and when you look at the image at 100 % you can see the detail. At first I was skeptical about this camera, when I took my first shot and saw the results I was sold . Great detail, camera fits your hand like a glove. Only thing I wish the price was lower but Iam glad a purchased this beauty!

I have brought the camera to have something more portable when I travel than the Arca Swiss 4x5 and the Hasselblad 205 TCC without losing resolution. I could not be more pleased with how good the images are and I am very fussy. It is bulky for an SLR but nothing like the other two cameras.

I am totally astounded by not only the truly emulsion like detail and dynamic range, but I was totally shocked by the magnificent color rendition and amazing accuracy, even in auto.
Overall the D3x produces image quality better than anything I have achieved even with 4x5 and laser scanning. It will be interesting to see if frame stitching can totally replace my view camera.

Hello D3x, farewell Velvia we shall miss ye, sorta.

Comments about Nikon D3x SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

For the past 6 years, I've been using the Fugi S2 Pro body with a few Nikkor lenses. It has served me well, but I've longed for a camera that could use the full capabilities of my lenses. Both the resolution and DX size have "constrained" their potential. How liberating it is now to use these on my new D3X. Although I still haven't reconcilled dipping into my life long savings account, I am quickly becoming addicted to the 24 megapixel capabilities. Sure, 99.9% of my photos will never reveal this degree of detail, but it's sorta like owning a vehicle with a huge engine. I will rarely use the "horse-power" of this resolution, but it's sure nice to know it's there in reserve. With the larger hard drives and storage media available to us, I see no problem is shooting regularly in the highest setting and then downsizing in Photoshop. This way, I can store my images in the highest resolution, and when it comes time to print them out, modify the file to fit the size, printer and end use of that photo. Although I seriously considered the D3s, I was cautious about a camera that took stills and video. Being also a woodworker, I've stayed away from those "all-in-one" tools. Here, I wanted the best still camera in the FX size and I believe this is the best for me. Although it will put one sizeable hole in my savings account... hey... you only live once, right???
