The Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Lens is exclusively designed for use with SLR cameras that use the smaller APS-C size sensor. This lens provides a super wide-angle zoom range, ideal for the tightest of interiors, as well as for dramatic landscape photography.

This updated "II" version benefits from improved multi-coating technology, which helps to reduce reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The Focus Clutch Mechanism feature - a signature of Tokina PRO series lenses - provides a faster, smoother autofocus operation, with a smooth manual focus action not normally found in autofocus lenses.

Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design, to correct for spherical aberrations. It also incorporates internal focusing to prevent deterioration of the optical quality at close distances and to eliminate rotation of the front barrel during focusing.

Equivalent focal length in 35mm terms when used on a digital camera is 19-38mm.

Note: NOT recommended for 35mm film or digital "full-frame" SLR cameras

Fast, ultra-wide angle zoom lens with a constant f/4 aperture
Two aspherical lens elements minimize distortion, especially at the periphery, for superior optical performance
Fast internal focusing with the one-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
Long focus travel for easy, accurate manual focusing
The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural

My review consists of heavy use since purchase on my Canon Rebel T3/1100D.

I was looking for a lens that would both give me the super wide look, but could also pair with my Canon 50mm f/1.4 to completely replace my kit lens. The desire to want a bit more zoom led me towards this lens - the 12-24, instead of Tokina's 11-16.

I rented the Canon 10-22mm first before purchasing this lens to test it out - and I just wasn't impressed. The results were fine and I was happy with the photos, but for the price, there wasn't a "wow" factor. If you haven't used it, it feels pretty much like a bigger version of the kit lens - and unfortunately just as plasticky. I though they results were fine but nothing that blew me away. After testing this 12-24mm lens from Tokina, I can easily say the glass is right on par with the Canon offering, for quite a bit less money.

This was my first 3rd party lens after using nothing but Canon lenses to date, and I'm extremely happy with the results.

A note to my Canon friends - this lens is made by former Nikon guys - so the zoom is "wrong and backwards" to what you will be used to. Not ideal but you get used to it.

Construction of the 12-24 is extremely durable - it feels like a tank and has some serious heft. Like I could use it for a weapon instead of a trusty rock. Obviously I wouldn't do that but you get the point.

Comes with a petal shaped hood that you should definitely use (and that accessory isn't included in the Canon 10-22). The hood has a velvety inside texture wrap that I'm not a fan of, after some early use it's already started to come off in places.

After using the 12-24 a number of times - and extensively on a recent vacation - It's super sharp and has minimal distortion. I'm using LR3 and they don't have a lens adjustment for it (unfortunately) but I actually haven't found the need for it.

There are no buttons or switches on the lens - Jumping between AF/MF is achieved via a snap ring on the end of the barrel. Takes a bit getting used to at first, but now I prefer it - you can easily switch from manual to auto focus and back without removing your eye from the viewfinder.

AF is slower and louder than other Canon Ultrasonic lenses I own (75-300 & 50 f/1.4). I will note at times, in low light and low contrasy scenes it can "hunt" a bit for the right focus. That's really the only negative I can come up with. A quick pull of the MF ring gets it right every time.

Great all arond lens - the 12mm is plenty wide for amazing shots - and the 24mm end keeps things non-distorted enough to shoot people if needed. Would definitely recommend to any crop sensor users.

I determined too late that this lens had a problem which caused pictures to be overexposed even when the meter said photos would be properly exposed. It wasn't due to operator error or difficult exposure situations. I initially thought the problem was due to operator error but I did some controlled testing and determined that it was not.

The other issue I had with this lens is extreme softness at the edges.

Tokina admitted to the problem and fixed it under warranty.

I had to pay shipping and I wasn't impressed with Tokina service.

They did not respond to e-mail.

They didn't give me any information about what they did to resolve the problems other than they fixed the lens.

I was using the lens with a Nikon D80. I purchased the lens in May 2009.

If you buy this lens, get it checked out before the deadline for a full refund has passed.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:

First of all I would like to state a few facts:
+B&H had the best price, shipped so fast, even for us Canadians!

+The 12-24 is just a bit shy of the 11-16 for width, so it mainly depends on your use! I use it for interior pictures mainly! Most realtors should be ashamed with pictures they take on a 10 year camera!

+There is no visible deformation vs the stock lens, BUT you can take more of every room, this is why I purchased it and it works great for that!

+It feels, looks like it is a serious upgrade from the Canon stock lens.

-The autofocus works one time out of 50, it is a pain, I use manual focus everytime with this lens, there is something bugged it keeps zooming, very annoying, that's why it lost a star here, could have lost 2.

Would I buy it again knowing all I know now?
The answer friends is yes, it was affordable, it serves all purposes and I almost forgot, yes it takes great pictures ;)

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:

I purchased this lens when my Tokina 12-24 wide angle lens quit working. That's right. I bought the first version seven years ago and about six months ago it stopped talking to my Canon camera bodies (10D, 40D and 7D). I really like the fit/finish/quality of the lens and the clarity of the images, and I couldn't find another lens that had the same specifications at this price point, so I bought another. Am I disappointed the first lens ONLY lasted seven years? A bit but nothing lasts forever. Obviously I'm pleased with this product.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:

The optics in this (relatively) inexpensive lens are remarkably good. Edge focus at f/4 is good to excellent with my 7D. That's probably because of the old-school heavy glass, which some have noticed makes the lens a bit heavy. My use of the lens has been pretty heavy for the past 3 years I"ve owned it, on location at least a couple times a week. So when I got the inevitable error message (discussed all over the web) "Communication with the lens blah blah clean the contacts" I wasn't surprised (the problem isn't the contacts). Sent it to Tokina and in about 2 weeks it was repaired and cleaned, for $150. What always happens is, after a lot of use a tiny internal wire or contact that sends the message from the camera to change aperture breaks. Still a VERY good lens for the money -- in reviews the Canon EF comparable lens is, if anything, less sharp for twice the $$ (so for this price you can buy a second as a backup).

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:

I purchased my first Tokina 12-24 F/4 lens in late 2005. I used it quite a bit over the years for group shots, landscapes and real estate photography. It was a perfect lens for my application so I was really upset when it quit talking to my Canon 7D a few months ago. I would get an "Err 01" error indicating "Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts." I cleaned the contacts on the camera and the lens and it seemed things were better for a frame or two. Then I'd get the same failure and error message. I also tried a second 7D body with the same results so I figured the lens was the problem.

When I priced a replacement I was pleasantly surprised to see the current price is less than I paid in 2005. That makes it an even better return on my investment. I just hope the next one works at least as long, and as well, as my first one.

I'm not a fan of the push/pull autofocus focus switch but the auto focus works well enough that I didn't use manual focus that often. If the first lens hadn't quit working I'd give this item a definite 5-star rating. Since I got almost 8 years of service I think a 4.5 would be reasonable.

ery good lens. I was always hesitate between this one and the 10-22mm from Canon.
After checking many test on internet, i decide to buy the Tokina (mainly because of the price, and not too much difference in term of quality, with the Canon)
I used it immediately and... I'm really NOT disappointed. It is a great lens, and for am amateur like me, it is far sufficient
Apparently there is some issues with chromatic aberration, well i didn't pay attention and now, if you are using a software like Lightroom, well there is powerful tools now who compensate that and correct this issues
The lens feel quality (weight, touch) and look like very robust (but i'll not test for that !!)

In conclusion, i'm very happy with this lens, it is working perfectly with my 7D and i took great photo during my trip in NY

After a lot of research into various wide-angle zooms, we settled on the 12-24mm Tokina. For our application (RED Digital Cinema 4K/5K and Canon HDSLR) some of the issues such as fringing were less of a concern, while sharpness, manual focus, and consistent aperture across the zoom were critical.

All in all, we're quite happy with this choice. Good build quality, sharp image, video-friendly features.

I bought this lens for a trip to the Grand Canyon, knowing that I couldn't possibly get enough landscape in a photo either with or without it. I thought it took beautiful, crisp shots and was perfectly happy with the autofocus, wide-angle and everything else. It feels really substantial, not at all cheap. Despite the added weight, I like that feel when I've spent some money!

I got this lens as an alternative to the canon 10-22 because of price. In saying that; this is a real nice lens for the money and even includes a lens hood. Lens seems very well built and solid. Focus is reasonably fast. My only con with it seems to be with the colors? For some reason the colors on this lens seem to have a grayish cast to them.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:

Color looks good. Focus does a good job just as good as the last Tokina I purchased. The only negative I can think of is the price dropped $ about 2 months after my purchase. Which is a tough pill to swallow.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:

Used the lens to photography my neice's wedding. This was definitely handy as I shot some photos in a tight stairwell where my 28-135 and 70-200 canon lens were just too tight. This is my first Tokina product and I would definitely buy again.

Note, I have not compared the output side by side to my other lens but the photos seem sharp and in focus.

Also fully satisfied with B&H. They delivered exactly on time.

Bottomline - I am a fully satisfied customer.

Great lens! Super fast and sharp. Its about as nice as my canon L's. I got this rather than the canon 10-20 zoom because price and constant F/4. I use it on my canon 7d as well as a 5d! The colors the lens gets are amazing!!!!

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:

This lens is on my camera almost all the time. The wide angle and the zoom to 24 makes it useful in almost every situation and i don't think i would like the tokina 11-16 2.8 more even though you can open it up more because of the wide angle I rarely need to open mine up to f4.0

Can't say enought great things about this lens! Sharp right from f/4. Fast, accurate focusing. Focus noise is hardly noticable on my 7D. Minor CA wide open but not even close to being as bad as I have read in reviews. Besides, CA is a common wide angle issue regardless of brand name and is easly fixed in Photoshop or any other software. Better built that many name brand lenses that cost far more. You really won't regret buying this lens.
