I have been designing, building and testing speakers for some time now, trying to get some "boxes" that cover the entire audio spectrum from the lowest lows - below hearing - to crystal clear highs - and all in between. I am a classical musician, and want to hear the sound reproduction as near to a live performance as possible.
I found there was nothing commercially available that lived up to that, as all speakers have their own characteristics. After much time and money, I have finally designed and built pretty much just those speakers.
What does that have to do with headphones?
Well, when listening to headphones, I tend to judge them against these speakers as to bass, mids and highs. It used to be that good headphones would beat good speakers hands down, but with this sound field a lot of today's light weight 'phones cannot live up to that. It has given me a new perspective on the sound quality I look for from headphones.
I own and have used a pair of Sony MDR-V600 'phones for years, and felt they were great for the money. I tried Sennheiser, and took them back. I have used Koss and others, but came back to the Sony's.
Now I have gotten the MDR-XB700, and find they outperform the MDR-V600. The "extra bass" doesn't seem to me as "extra", but rather, what other 'phones are missing - namely a deep bass that can be heard. I also find the mids pleasing, and certainly the highs are crisp and clear.

I think that when I ordered the XB700's I had my expectations set too high. I've never had a good headset so I didn't really know what I would be getting. I've listed to them through my laptop, iPod/iPhone, home stereo and my desktop pc. None of my equipment is high end, so I am thinking that maybe if I had a higher end sound card or receiver, that maybe the MDR-XB700's would be able to shine. For me personally, with the equipment that I have, I am far from blown away by the performance. On all of my sources, the low bass just falls off. At medium volume, the bass stops getting stronger all together. Those things make me assume that my source is not powerful enough to drive the headphones sufficiently, but I get similar, lackluster performance on all of my sources.

My last hope to validate these things will come after I get to visit my brother who has some higher quality home audio equipment. We'll see how they do when connected to a higher quality source.

I use this cans mainly for music listening. Its perfect for my preferred music genre like hiphop, trance, electronic, etc. Perfece deep sounding bass! This thing will really vibrate your brain!

the flat cord looks really cool, but the length of it gives me a bid of dissapointment.

    i highly recommed this cans!

Comments about Sony MDR-XB700 Extra Bass Stereo Headphones:

More treble than I expected and I expected more bass. Sound quality is good but sometimes the high frequencies make my ears ring. The bass is not weak but doesn't really satisfy me because its doesn't really have "extra" bass but it does have more bass that most headphones. If you want more bass you should use an equalizer because without an equalizer there the bass is kinda weak. If you can feed this thing bass then it will come out powerful. I wish it had a built in amplifier to boost the bass for music players without an equalizer. They are also bigger than I expected. I knew they were going to be huge and they were still bigger than I thought. The sound leaks alot too. The drivers do not look 50mm and I tried to measure it but failed because the cushion was too big. The bass is good only if you equalize your music to boost the bass

Comments about Sony MDR-XB700 Extra Bass Stereo Headphones:

First time I tried them, I thought the ground was really shaking. This is a special feeling coming from a pair of headphones. Man I love technology...

I'm really happy with the purchase. I used them mostly for gaming and movies (through my receiver EQ). The extra bass creates a great environment... really good for immersion. I've read comments about having trouble hearing dialogs over the bass but never experienced it yet (plugged in the amplifier).

As for music, I find them really good for music that is not too demanding on fast bass (Rap, Blues, Rock...). Fast bass plays ok but not enough to recommend them (ex. Metal). Still it's not THAT bad and I prefer having these to enhance the bass greatly on everything else than flat headphones.

Build quality is great. They're really, and I mean, REALLY comfortable. I've never used a more comfortable headset in my life. They cover the ears perfectly. They look... well... taste is personal.

Avoid them if you're looking for flat sounds or love extra bright highs.

I'd love to have the cord on one side only, and detachable, but I don't find this to be a deal breaker in my case.

Comments about Sony MDR-XB700 Extra Bass Stereo Headphones:

When I first got these, I was worried about the isolation to the outside world considering I used these primarily at work. However, I can listen loud enough to drown out ambient noise and conversations but still prevent my cube mates from hearing the music. I know this was a concern for me so I wanted to put that out there. I had previous purchased Sennheiser HD650s but due to open back design, I could not use them at work. So now onto the good stuff. I use these headphones in conjunction with my Bass Boost CMoy amplifier and they sound amazing. My amp can actually push these cans into saturation or so I think. I initially thought maybe the amp was clipping out but I raised the rail voltage to 18V and distortion started at the same volume. I don't have another amp to confirm but I believe this to be true. Nonetheless, you can run these headphones loud enough to damage your hearing before distortion sets in. Great cans for [$]. Good buy!

Can't go wrong with the XB700. Don't think you need to be listening to hip hop or have an afro to deserve these, they're good for anything, like Pink Floyd. Comfy, block out ambient noise quite well. Plug in and you're in your own world.

Wow, these headphones are great, sure the cord could be longer (I bought a longer cable) but the sound is great, not the big bass I was thinking (I thought doof doof) but the bass is awesome when played and does not distract from the music. On a train and plane these are simply great (via iPod) and via a stereo they are also come into their own.
Owned a lot of headphones in the past, but these are my new favourite ones. Awesome

Comments about Sony MDR-XB700 Extra Bass Stereo Headphones:

After much research, I bought these to replace a pair of Koss 4x's which finally died due to foam disintegration. They are everything I hoped they'd be. Bass you can feel, nice full mid-range and superb highs. All of this comes with excellent staging effect as well. They are also the most comfortable 'phones I've ever worn! As another reviewer pointed out earlier, to get the most from these you need to tweak your EQ settings. This is especially true when listening on a laptop or MP3 player. I am considering a cMoy amp for these situations. Yeah, they're big but so's the sound! The flat cord resists tangles but could stand to be twice as long however. I would highly recommend these to anyone seeking a pair of excellent sounding, comfortable and nicely priced headphones.

Handle them with care though, the padding seems a bit fragile. And the chord is a wee on the short side. But overall, it's an awesome pair of headphones.

Comments about Sony MDR-XB700 Extra Bass Stereo Headphones:

I had the MDR-XB300's and I loved them. I had them for about a year and half and I found that it was time for an upgrade. I did a lot of research and decided to stay within the same headphone family and just get the best that they offer and that's what I got. I take them to school with me, plug them into my mac and i can't hear anyone around me. I love the amount bass that it gives you, it sounds like you have high quality speakers wrapped around you head, it's awesome. I love these headphones.

Incredible clarity of sound. the diaphram is tight, doesn't wabble much and doesn't distort the sound.

These are very good for the price. But you really need to know that you do get the extra bass. It means that your music will sound differently, with this "hump" in the middle bass range. It's not the deep bass you would get from a good pair of floor speakers, but ruther a boom from an average subwoofer.
They are very good for MP3 players which have no eguilizers (like my Zune). They let you hear the bass guitar now.
Also, I expected a better sound isolation.

Comments about Sony MDR-XB700 Extra Bass Stereo Headphones:
