Originally I bought the MicLink because I needed mobility. I have a good wireless lapel mic, the receiver connects to a Win 7 laptop, the audio is muxed with a live video feed from a capture unit, and the laptop splits the signal into a live RTMP broadcast and a local recording, both done by FMLE. I used to connect the receiver to the laptop with an unbalanced cabled, and wanted to improve the sound quality. However, although I had the budget for a "real" audio interface, it seemed to me too cumbersome to carry one around. After all, with gain control on the input and all the software you can get on the laptop, why would I need another "box"? So, when I saw the MicLink it looked almost too good to be true.

Well, after actually using it and reviewing the recording quality, I can recommend it for any 16bit use, not just on the road. This modestly looking "cable" is a true audio interface, that will do its thing without eating any real estate on the work space or the power strip. I plugged it in and it just worked. Its Windows driver has an AGC option so I didn't even have to play around with any extra software setup. I had no latency relative to the video and didn't need any ASIO driver. The recording came out crisp clean, and the content (mostly speech) had good loudness level, a professional presence, and studio-like body.

Looking into the Windows sound settings I discovered that the MicLink is also a sound device - that is, looks like you can also use the computer as the audio source. I didn't try this yet and would like to find out if others did.

Bottom line - one of the best cost/benefit ratios I've seen.

Word about B&H - I ordered the MicLink on Thursday and got it Sunday morning on the other side of the planet. Wow!

Comments about Alesis MicLink - XLR to USB Cable:

I used it for a mic on my PC. Plugged it right in and away it went. Hooked right into my record software without any software install or anything. Just what I was looking for.

        Very Noisy

Comments about Alesis MicLink - XLR to USB Cable:

It may just be the one I received (from the used dept at BH) but it was a very noisy cable. It introduced a fair bit of ground hum into my audio. That said, it did convert the signal from XLR to USB.

Comments about Alesis MicLink - XLR to USB Cable:

Bought for recording some voiceovers and podcasting using my existing Audio Technica 813 microphone. Works great, plugs straight into Win7 and autoconfigures.

Used it with Audacity to record a few samples which came out perfect and provides a much less expensive alternative to buying a newer microphone for now.

                Highly recommend it.

Only con is that the connector seems like it might get some wear with moderate to heavy use, so if you're using this on the road you may want to take that into consideration.

Easy to use. I use this for voice-overs connected to a Sony ECM44B lapel mic. The sound is great.
Use with a lapel mic eliminates the hollow sound & popping "p's" with other USB mics. Reasonable price.
