The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens is a large aperture standard zoom lens that is ideal for photojournalism and general pro photography. The lens covers focal lengths from 24mm wide angle to 70mm medium telephoto, with a bright viewfinder, and easy AF/MF all the way through. When used with Canon digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors, the focal length offered by this lens will be equivalent to 38-112mm, in 35mm SLR terms.

The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function as well as full-time manual focusing capability. This lens features Super Multi Layer Coating, which reduces flare and ghosting. DG is a designation Sigma uses on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. In addition, this lens has been redesigned and is now more compact and lighter than its predecessor.

DG Lens Design
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance while also cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor.
HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor)
Hyper Sonic Motor provides smooth, silent AF with fulltime manual focus override
ELD & SLD Elements
This lens uses three ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) elements and two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements for correction against chromatic aberrations
9-Blade Aperture
The rounded 9-blade diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural

I actually got this lens immediately after shooting a wedding on the Canon 24-70 2.8 and with another professional with this one. I liked both...With that, I feel that Canon may have a slight edge on the optic side BUT this lense is just as good for what it's for...24-70. This is my reception lens, so it's what I have on the camera while walking in crowds and such. Since it's shorter (and just as sturdy as the Canon one) I chose it.

I have struggled with the decision Canon 24-70 L or Sigma 24-70 HSM ex, I have read every single review, on every single site. I decided to go with the Sigma. My wife insists that if I read a good Sigma review , that it was secretly written by the Sigma company and the same if it's a strong Canon review..I don't work for either company.
I ordered the Sigma, my first impression was , very sturdy feeling, a bit shorter than my Canon 28-135, First problem was that the zoom ring is at the rear of the Sigma lens, right up against the camera body, it changed how I am used to holding the Canon 7D, I didn't like that part, also the zoom ring was very stiff, beyond firm, you had to squeeze it to turn it. I also discovered right away that I missed the IS on my regular Canon lens .

It is a very short lens , which I thought I was going to like but I didn't.
I started to shoot, pictures looked pretty good, Bokeh is beautiful on this lens, HSM focus motor is amazing, totally silent fast as anything I have ever seen, I could get used to the short feel if I had to.
The real test: I have read all about some of us trying this lens and having back or front focus issues, it seemed for the most part to be ok on my 7D, shots looked sharp.
My neighbor also has a 7D, with a Canon 70-200 non IS F2.8 lens. I decided to shoot side by side with him, both cameras set to the exact same settings, both at 70mm, 2.8. various shutter speeds, no flash, this is where the difference became obvious.
We shot images of his wife, face only, dead focus between the eyes, then zoomed in to full zoom first on the camera screen , then on my 27" imac, the Canon eyes were crystal clear, tack sharp..perfect, the Sigma lens was not, it was fuzzy, not horrible , but not in the league of the Canon.
I sent my Sigma back and I'm staying with the Canon lens for my Canon camera.
Even with that said, I'm not trashing the Sigma lens, for a lot of shooters the quality is going to be good and it's a good price for a really nice lens, but I saw it with my own eyes, the Canon lens was SO much sharper, which means the shots will look better when zoomed back to regular size.
I am also aware that I might find the sweet spot at a different zoom range on the Sigma, but I want to be able to shoot at any length on the lens and know it will be as clear as possible. In my opinion, the Canon does a better job, more expensive yes, but I am getting paid for my work and i want to show the best that I can. I hoped this helped someone else. Also it seems impossible to install the lens cap on the Sigma with the lens hood in place.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I use this lense with Canon 700D. I detected a slight front-focus and I think I may have to ask for front-focus correction. Besides that, there are other peculiarities. If you shoot with fully open aperture of f2,8 than only focal lengh 24-35mm preserves the desired sharpness in the focus area. If you want to shoot at focal lengh of 50mm - better to use aperture of f3.2 - 4.0, while with the focal lengh of 70mm - I would recommend aperture of f4.0 or smaller. The range of working aperture f-number at all focal lenghs is f4-14 (with f16 the sharpness is already not ideal). Another thing, the speed of auto-focus. It is not as fast as I wished it were, which makes it difficult to take dynamic pictures of kids and pets. In general it is not a bad lense for travelling, since it allows you to shoot decent landscapes and portraits, but you have to learn how to work with its peculiarities.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I've rented this lens a couple of times for events in which I cannot physically get closer to the action. Otherwise, I would use my Zeiss 50mm f1.4. I'm a big believer in primes but zooms definitely have their purpose. And the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 IF EX DG HSM is a lens that could lure a primes fanatic! There are two things that impress me most about this lens:* Sharpness* ContrastYou just can't beat a good prime for sharpness. But the Sigma is so amazing. I can't notice the difference. The detail in the smallest of items in an image is terrific. When you see the droplets of a splash in the frame, you can easily see the shape, texture and where the light is shining on the droplet. That's fantastic resolution. With many lenses, images look a bit washed out or too dark across the board. But if I get the exposure right, color all looks consistent and vibrant with this lens. It makes my job so much easier if I don't have to make color adjustments to an image after an event. Images can go right out as is!My 5D MKII has horrible AF. So judging it's AF performance. Even so, I think the lens focuses extremely fast. I usually prefer MF even with action events. In that respect, I wish the focus throw was a little longer. It makes it easier to tune sharpness. But I can't expect that when a lens is geared for AF.I was blown away the first time I rented this lens and the second time still got me excited. That it handles the megapixels of my Canon 5D MKII is a good thing. This is certainly on my short-list for lens to purchase. Especially since I make money with it. And on the subject of money.. It's a fantastic value! I can't imagine the Canon version being 2.5x better than the Sigma. Weather sealing is a good thing and if you're on the beach or in shady weather. But I'm not. From what I know, putting in a lens for maintenance would cost around $250. Which is still a bargain instead of paying for the Canon. The only shocker is the size and weight of the lens. I'm just not used to a zoom lens. My Zeiss 50mm is about a third of the size and weight. I usually have a wrist strap to my camera and with the 50mm, I can carry it all day. No problem. With the Sigma, my arm is definitely getting tired after 3 or 4 hours. But attached with a Black Rapid strap, you don't notice the weight. It feels durable even though it's made of plastic.I don't think I'll rent the lens again. It's a great performing, money-making lens and a great value. After three or four events, the lens will have already paid for itself.I love when a lens get's me really excited to shoot!

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I rented this lens over the weekend for an event I was photographing. I was a second shooter for it and the main photographer thought a 24-70mm lens would be a good zoom for me to use. I would be photographing mostly individuals, small groups and 'atmosphere'. So yes, a 24-70mm would be a good choice. However I didn't have a lens in this range. I heard lots of good things about this lens so I thought I would give it a try.

The first thing that got me was the size of the lens! It's big and heavy! Well, for what it is. It's a good 2x bigger than my Zeiss 50mm f1.4. And by the end of the day, my wrist was a little tired from the weight of the lens. But this is 4 hours walking around with it. I'd say it's equal in weight to a good 100mm...

If you can get past the weight and size, this is an amazing lens! It's not as sharp as my Zeiss (and most lenses at f4 or smaller are not) but it's incredibly close. The bokeh and IQ of the lens are an amazing combination. The more colors in your image, the better! When I did some flower photography the day before the event, I was quite blown-away by the lens. For the event, I was able to crop some images taken with my Canon 5D MKII quite a bit and still got great detail.

I can see why wedding photographers have this lens in their arsenal. The wide end is great for big group shots and if you want lots of background in the shot. The long end is great for portraits, small groups and decent distance from action work.

The only way to improve this lens is by making it lighter. Maybe increase the amount of throw when zooming in and out. Though I'm spoiled by Zeiss having a very long throw. I think it's easier and faster to get the right composition. Quality, versatility and cost makes this lens hard to beat.

This lens is now on my wish list!

        Great everyday lens

        By Aaron

        from Texas

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

While I'm not a professional photographer, having a professional lens is not what I'm looking for. However, that is what I feel whenever I use this lens. The open aperture of f/2.8 makes the DOF shallow and gives amazing portraits. Its autofocus is a tad slow but nothing too serious. It is a lot heavier than I expected but the quality of glass is that of which you can only get from a Sigma lens. Overall, it's a great everyday, multipurpose lens. Definitely a huge upgrade from the standard 18-55mm that came with the Canon T3i.

I've been needing a higher quality lens for shooting portraits and videos. This one was recommended by a fellow photographer. Totally worth the price, it is a good quality lens. I have taken some portraits with it already and I can notice the difference. I use it with my Canon 60D, also recently purchased. Previously I was using my Canon T3i with the kit lens. Big difference there, I definitely recommend spending money on a good lens.

Be sure to take your time with setting up your shot or take multiple shots to reduce noise or blurring that you may see later. This definitely a great option for a hobbyist or semiprofessional photographer.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I have used this lens for portraits and large group shots. I have taken some scenery type shots as well with it. So far, I love it. After reading all the reviews I was a little nervous about the clarity of the lens but the price was right for the product. For large group shots I found myself adjusting the people on the ends to get the clarity I wanted. The focus range seems to change slightly on the edges, but not a big deal. All in all I'm very happy with the lens.

I need quick replace for my 2 lenses ( in same time 2 lenses have problem and I have to send for repair ). B&H very quickly sent the lens. I was surprise, because I had before same lens from Sigma BUT this one is new design and 3 step up.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 is a great lens. It has definitely become my workhorse lens. I have use it for video and photos and both have consistent outputs.

The only thing I was a little disappointed about was the focus ring. Could be a bit smoother I thought.

                      Overall, great lens.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

So far I have used this lens for a wedding (the main reason I decided to buy it). I was asked from a friend to shoot his wedding like I did in an emergency for another friend. For the other friend I used my all purpose 18-250mm lens and the pictures were ok but in my mind not wedding quality so when asked to do this wedding it gave me the reason to buy this lens. I have not been disappointed. I am by no means professional but looking at those pictures, the clarity, bokeh and general quality I am very happy. I now use this lens as my general walk around lens for pictures of the kids and pretty much everything. I now am looking at selling my 18-250 and buying a 70-200 f2.8 just because I can see such a difference in the quality of the pictures. Side note: I use a cannon T2i looking forward to upgrading that also.
