Product Highlights
  • Wide Angle-Telephoto

The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens is a large aperture standard zoom lens that covers a range from wide angle to short telephoto. It is ideal for general photography such as snapshots, portraiture and landscapes. When used on digital SLR cameras which use the APS-C (Nikon DX) sensor, this lens will provide a focal length equivalent to 36-105mm in 35mm terms.

DG is a designation that Sigma uses on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. The Super Multi Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the use of ELD and SLD glass provides excellent correction of all types of aberrations. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function as well as full-time manual focusing capability.

Note! HSM lenses, while able to manually focus with all Nikon F-mount cameras, will not autofocus with certain older film AF cameras. This is the same limitation as with Nikon's own AF-S lenses. Incompatible models are: N60, N55, N8008/s, N6006, N5005, N4004 & N2020.

DG Lens Design
The DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. The lens is specially coated to achieve the best color balance, while also cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor.
HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor)
Hyper Sonic Motor provides smooth, silent AF with fulltime manual focus override
ELD & SLD Elements
This lens uses 1 ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) element, 2 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements, and 3 aspherical elements for excellent correction of all types of aberrations
EX Series
The EX series denotes excellence of engineering and technology
9-Blade Aperture
The rounded 9-blade diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural

I wanted a 24-70 mm f/2.8 for my Nikon. The Nikkor version is too expensive for my "hobby". I checked out reviews and felt comfortable with the Sigma. I have no regrets with my choice.

The lens performs well. I did test for back focus at various focal lengths and judged the lens accurate.

    THE GOOD:
    - A GREAT price
    - No noticeable Chromatic Aberration
    - No noticeable Vignetting
    - Good focus speed
    - Performs well in low light
    - Good Bokeh (I think you have to TRY to get the exaggerated onion effect some have complained about)

    THE BAD:
    - It isn't as sharp as I had hoped. It's not really "bad", but it's almost noticeable
    - OK, the sharpness issue is noticeable; which prompted my back focus test.
    - The lens cap falls off (Sigma needs to make a better cap)- I replaced the original with a Tamron 82mm which works great.

    THE UGLY (or IDIOSYNCRATIC):
    - The zoom ring is closest to the camera, which is kind of weird... and the ring is a little stiff...
    - An 82mm filter size, seriously?

To be fair this lens rates a full 4 stars for me. If it were as sharp as I had hoped for, then there would be no justification for the Nikkor's price. This lens fits my needs perfectly.

I used this lens in illuminated and low-light conditions. As someone who comes from a cinema background with experience with quality cinema-grade glass, I'm fairly picky. That said, for a zoom of this range, the lens offers good versatility for your average use. I would not use this lens at 2.8 at all... it's just too soft. There can be a considerable amount of AF searching in low-light conditions, and even when the lens seemed to "lock-on" its focus without hesitation, I found that it had a great tendency of AF focusing (with flash AF assist) to close to infinity in those conditions (backgrounds were more in-focus than subjects). I compared this to an inexpensive prime (Nikkor 50mm 1.8) as I didn't have access to another zoom. At the same settings and an f/4.5, the Sigma seemed so much darker (almost too much, even for a zoom)with an apparent 1/3 stop difference in mid/sub-gray tone brightness. Contrast is nothing to be excited about as I felt the images lack as much "pop" and gray and dark-gray tones looked more "muddied-up," even with the brightness compensation... Another interesting thing I found is that when set to 50mm (actually 52mm as I couldn't get it to 50...) this lens had much more depth of field (object @ 3 ft.) than the 50mm Nikon. Also, Sigma claims the 9-blade aperture's benefits, but the bokeh is nowhere near as smooth and creamy as the 50mm prime (again, I am not sure if the nikkor zoom handles this much better). Sharpness is OK, but nothing to write home about. I'm considering the Nikon at this time as I'm pretty demanding from my images. For a good point and shoot, non-money making lens on the budget, it's a good deal.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

I tried to be happy with my 50mm prime but it just wasn't flexible enough and frustrated the heck out of me. After reading numerous reviews and doing my research I decided to buy the Sigma 24-70. Used it at a wedding last weekend and am very happy with the results and so is everyone who looked at the pictures.
Its got a quality feel to it. On the heavy side but well worth the price.
Great service as always from B&H.

As a 'Prosumer' as B&H would call me, I did not want to spend the money for the Nikon version of this lens yet I wanted to have the same features in a good lens. I am growing a p/t business doing portraiture work and needed some quality without taking out a second mortgage ;-)
This lens meets all my needs and the picture quality is fantastic...in fact, I don't see why anyone would buy the Nikon when lenses like this are available. Now....I have not used the Nikon version but for what I do I am totally happy and very pleased!

I have received many compliments on images taken with the lens, clarity is great. My only issue is that the lens seems to struggle finding focal point in low light. I photograph weddings, and have felt slightly frustrated when witnessing a great shot but the lens cannot adjust to focus and misses. Price was significantly lower than Nikon brand lens. Overall satisfied.

the only feature which is taking some getting used to is the zoom operates like a Canon zoom. I keep turning it in the Nikon direction.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

I read all the negative reviews about this lens and decided to try it for myself. I read it had a cheap hood and lens cap and this is simly NOT TRUE! The build quality is superb! And to be quite frank it's more solid than the Nikon. It's better than the Nikon in shape size and it's more compact. The Nikon is huge once you put the hood on and it can be combersome (I own a NIKKOR 24-70 lens at present but needed another one for our growing company and renting was becoming to expensive). I decided on the SIGMA 24-70mm instead another Nikon for cost reasons. I love this lens and it is on par with the Nikon in everyway. Save yoursely 1K. Seriously.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

Shot a wedding last weekend and this lens was on my camera most of the day and it worked great! If you are in the same boat as I am in right now and cannot get the Nikon which is near &2000, this sigma is a great lens. I did notice though that it can pop out of auto focus and into manual when putting the camera into a tight bag. The switch must have gotten caught on something a couple of times. So, watch that to avoid out of focus pics! But yes, get it....

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

I use this product for general photography alongside my 50mm, which I use for, you guessed it, portraiture. I was between this lens and the Tamron 24-70. At the store when I held both lenses, and did test drives with them, I noticed both lenses were extremely similar in terms of image quality. However, the Sigma feels like it is built much better than the Tamron; the Tamron has a more of a plastic feel to it while the Sigma has a sturdier metal feel. Although this lens doesn't have the image stabilization that the Tamron has, it has a higher resolution (according to DXO Mark). All in all, I think this is a great lens and I am happy that I chose it. Not only is it a phenomenal lens that beats the Tamron in many categories, but I also saved[$] If you are in the same boat that I was in, I would highly recommend you consider this lens.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

The 24-70 is a great range for everyday photo assignments. I wanted to buy the Nikon 24-70 2.8 but $ is just too much money. This lens does the job very nicely. The Sigma isn't quite as sharp as the Nikon, but it's still very good. For $ you get a really great lens for your money.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

This is a good quality lens. I would not say it is on par with the Nikon equivalent, but it is also about half the price. One thing that I like about this lens compared to the nikon is the how much shorter it is. Makes it easy to have around with you more often.
