Questions? Ask our experts:

Burn your video footage to DVD with just the touch of a button using Sony's DVDirect Express VRD-P1 DVD burner. Simply connect the burner to your compatible Handycam, via the USB, and press record. The burner gives you the option to record all the footage on your camera or only the video captured since the last time you burned. The unit also provides the option to create movie chapters.

There's no need for an external power source with the VRD-P1, because it runs off the camcorder's USB bus power. In addition, you can play your footage back on a TV, using the DVDirect Express, when the camera is connected. This easy to use unit is made specifically for 2009 standard definition flash memory and HDD Sony Handycams and records to DVD-R and DVD+R disks. It will also be compatible with all future Sony Handycams that feature a USB host function.

I use this product to easily make copies of video footage from my DCR-SX63 Handycam. My friend and associate also has an identical Handycam, and it's a great way to download the film work we do.

The product, once you figure out how it connects to your Handycam, couldn't be any easier to use. You just have to have the camera plugged in to a wall outlet, and then you have to figure out where to make the USB connection (hint: open the camera as if you were filming, and plug it in there). After that, you just load in a blank DVD, push one button, and the camera will display how much time left to finish burning the DVD.

If there are any disadvantages to this product, I guess the only one that comes to mind is that you can't make two copies of the same material from the camera to the DVDirect. (Technically, however, you can, if you use the features available on your Handycam.) But this is a minor issue, since it's very easy to make duplicates of your DVD on your home computer once you've created it using the DVDirect unit.

Comments about Sony DVDirect Express VRD-P1:

I use DVDirect Express mostly while on vacation. I shoot a lot of videos and photos and need a quick way to burn DVD's. I wish it had a few more options. I haven't figured out if or how I can edit video after I have burned it to DVD with the VRD-P1. I don't think you can.

Ok, there are faster DVD burners out there, with dual-leyers, Blue-Ray, x-ray....who cares,I needed the simplest way for my wife to backup her Sony SR47 hard-drive based camcorder, and the DVDirect Express VRD-P1 does it perfectly. No need to use a computer, fill-up it's disk, learn to run transfer programs etc.All I had to do is plug the DVDirect Express into the SR47 (draws power from the camcorder's AC connection), and follow the instructions on the camcorder's screen. It's truly a one-button operation. It even gave information like - Load a DVD, and how many DVDs it would take for the data on the camera. This is as seamless an integration as you can ask for.To top things off - [...]
