It's difficult to master a quality driving game like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue unless you have a racing wheel such as this one. After hearing how terrible the Intec racing wheel is, I decided to give this one a try. My first impression was that it looks really professional and even has that new car smell. The wheel grip feels amazing and all the buttons are really nice.

Despite what you may read on the internet about the PS3 not having any force feedback racing wheels, this wheel DOES use force feedback, and it really enhances the driving experience. It allows you to feel the car interacting with the road and the other cars and brings the game to life.

The wheel is easy to install. It clamps to a table using two clamps in the wheel base. The pedal board really neat retractable panel with spikes on it to dig into carpet and keep it from sliding. If you have hardwood floor, you might have issues with keeping the pedals in place.

This wheel will definitely improve your ability to control your car and make the racing experience way better. There's no replacement for the feel of the wheel and the force feedback giving you the resistance of the road. So, if you can afford it, this is a great wheel. Logitech does make another wheel that is supposedly even better but is MUCH more expensive, so may be for really hardcore racers.

    Takes Some Getting Used To

I purchased a PS3 and Gran Turismo 5 a couple months ago, and after winning almost all of the A-Spec races and half the B-Spec, I started racing the Seasonal Events. Those are much harder, because they start you in 12th place on all of them, and the requirements of each race are more stringent than the A-Spec races. I noticed that I had a hard time steering the vehicle in a very fine manner, which was causing me slower lap times as I didn't stay perfectly in the correct line when cornering. Also, the gas is either pressed all the way down or not pressed at all with the regular controller. In real driving, you can press the gas and brake pedals down only slightly for less effect, giving you greater control of the vehicle, so I decided to bite the bullet and buy a racing wheel that came with pedals. My background with GT is GT2 and GT4 on PS1 and PS2. Completed both games with regular controllers; have never used a wheel for any game before.

I decided on the Driving Force GT Racing Wheel by Logitech because it got pretty good reviews all around and wouldn't break the bank. But it also didn't look like a cheapee version that would just break in a few weeks. The bonus is that this can be used on the PC.

Setup was easy. I have a coffee table which has a top that lifts up and to chest level and towards anyone sitting on the couch. The wheel just clamped to that. One USB cord plugs into the PS3 and a power cord runs to the wall outlet. Done in about 3 minutes.

There are 2 main issues I have with this wheel:

    1) First, the wheel is very small, as some other reviews stated. It is nowhere near as big as a real steering wheel, which takes away from the "reality factor." It makes you feel like you're driving one of those plastic bus toys for 5 year olds. Not a huge deal, but enough to notice. You get used to this rather quickly though.

    2) Second, and much more of an issue for me at least, is that it gives WAY too much feedback back to the driver. When I read the reviews I thought the "feedback" everyone kept lauding meant that if you drove over a bump or a crease in the road, that would cause the wheel to move slightly, as it does in a real car, say, when going over train tracks or the like. Or if you ran into the wall it would jerk the wheel in some other direction regardless of what you wanted it to do, because hitting a wall or another car uses a lot more force. But no - it turns the wheel on its own, jerking it out of your hands regardless of how hard you're holding it. It is almost impossible to keep the wheel centered, because the more force you use to turn the wheel, the more it pushes back in the opposite direction with the same bit of force. This makes precision driving very, very difficult. Even when you get on a straightaway going 150-200 MPH, if you just turn it ever so slightly as with a real car, it pushes back the same amount, making it almost impossible to just let it go straight.

This also means that for tighter turns, the feedback is much, MUCH more excessive, preventing you from making the turn correctly. That was extremely disappointing to me because that's exactly what I bought it for. I am not exaggerating when I say it pushes back with the same amount of force that you are using to steer it. The first couple days I used it, I found my fingers going numb because I was gripping the wheel so hard in order to control it because the feedback is so intense. I consider myself a pretty good Gran Turismo driver, but I don't understand other reviews stating the feedback is "awesome." I disagree. The feedback is TERRIBLE. It renders the wheel pretty useless, except as a second controller for arcade mode. Between two drivers, we give it to the better driver while a guest/friend/visitor gets the d-pad for better control, to even up the odds a little.

If you have had wheels in the past and you LIKE feedback, or want more than you've had on previous wheels, then this is the wheel for you. Otherwise, I suspect it is going to take me a great deal of time to get used to and get to the point where I can race as well or better with it than I can with a regular controller.

I gave it 3 stars because it still works; it's usable, just not for really difficult races you're having a lot of trouble winning. For that I use the controller, learn the track and play with the tuning. Also, I am hoping I will get used to it enough in the future, which is why I gave it a 3 instead of a 2.

I bought this because the price was really good. When it arrived it said on the box for a PS2/3. I freaked because I thought it wouldn't work on my PC. But it not only works, it works great ! Makes these driving sims I had worth their cost. I highly recomend this wheel for any driving sim.

Comments about Logitech Driving Force GT Racing Wheel:

Played only a few hours so far. That said, it's very precise & realistic. Works as advertised. All buttons assign & work well. Motor feedback is great, but it adds a tad bit of "grind" feel if you're struggling against the motor. It's not distracting to the play, & seems probably "normal" for a motorized feedback feature, though this is my first experience with it. Played on PC (Windows 8.1), and iMac with Bootcamp (Windows 7). Does not work with NFSW (need for speed -world) unless you change the name of the wheel in the registry. Retractable carpet cleat bar on the foot pedal attachment - nice touch.

Comments about Logitech Driving Force GT Racing Wheel:

I've been using this racing wheel for 2 weeks now with Gran Turismo 5 on my Playstation 3. Paired with a big screen HDTV and the in-game "bumper" view, this wheel provides a really exhilarating experience. It's so convincing your brain needs some adjusting to compensate for the fact that you're not really moving. The force feedback is adjustable in-game and provides a realistic sensation of how much your tires are either gripping the track or spinning out of control. Bumps and rumbles also match perfectly the on-screen action. I'll never go back to playing with a thumb stick controller ever again. This is just the way racing games are meant to be played. The materials of the wheel are all rugged and high-quality. The foot pedal platform features flip-down spikes that keep it perfectly in place on a carpeted floor. The only real challenge with this wheel isn't about the wheel itself, but finding a suitable table to clamp it to. Look closely at the side pictures to be aware of the space you'll need for the clamps. You'll want a table that is low and sturdy. Light fold-out tables probably won't work well here. If you've got the right table, you can't go wrong with this wheel. The Driving Force GT racing wheel transforms Gran Turismo 5 from a game into a true racing simulator.

The wheel is reasonably large and can turn 450 degrees each way. Force feedback is strong but can be tuned down in game or using the Logitech driver software. The only drawback is that the clamp (that fixes the wheel to a table, etc.) can open to only a small distance, and I have to move my laptop to a table not too thick to use it.

Works great with Dirt 3, Need for speed Hot Pursuit and Need for Speed Shift2 Unleashed. Feedback is awesome. Gas peddle is a little light. Brake is ok. It is a worth while investment. Don't own PS3 so can't talk about how that works. For PC excellent entry to mid level option. Paddle shifters are a bit stiff but other than that its perfect. No issues after over 80 hours of game play.

Simply plugged and playing great with PS3. This wheel rocks with DIRT, DIRT2,DIRT3,GranTourismo5...excellent feel and linearity and the force feedback is not overpowering like my previous wheel.

I once had a Thrustmaster wheel but due to OS changes in todays computers, it no longer works, but the GT wheel and games I purchased are great. Having a blast and only wish I would have purchased it sooner. Arrived as stated, easy to hookup and runs great on my PC windows 7 format. Totally satisfied with purchase.

This was my first wheel that I have bought or used and I can say it is a very good one. It takes a bit to get used to it compared to a controller but once you do it really makes it feel like you are in the game.

Comments about Logitech Driving Force GT Racing Wheel:

I purchased this item for usage with my PC. I've tried several different games ranging from simulators to more fast-paced racing games. The wheel has excelled in each situation. It's great!

                              Pros of the wheel:
-Great force feedback. You really have to fight it.

-So many configuration options! You can change how the wheel performs down to resistance and force feedback power, and set up control schemes for individual games.

-Sturdy! I have yet to have it fall off of my desk. It must be properly tightened however.

-900 degree total rotation! That's a full turn and a quarter in each direction. It's plenty. It's also very, very nice to have.

                              Cons:
-You can feel the holes on the back of the wheel where the screws are.

-Wheel is 11 inches in diameter - most car wheels are closer to 14 inches. Might not be a big deal to you, but it's a little disorienting at first.

-Pedals are plastic. This isn't so bad, but longevity might be an issue. They also slide on hard surfaces, and you can't simply just put it up against a wall because the pedals go over the edge of the whole unit. It has a nifty "grip pad" for carpet, however, which works wonderfully.

All in all - if you are in the market for a racing wheel, but can't afford the higher end models like the G27, this is an *amazing* compromise. Don't settle for less!

Comments about Logitech Driving Force GT Racing Wheel:

I purchased this product for use with Gran Turismo 5 on the PS3. After two weeks of ownership I can write that it is excellent. Logitech is known for good peripherals and this is no exception. Playing the game with the wheel is more precise, provides a more accurate 'feel' for the road, and is just plain more fun. The only thing that is a challenge is the setup. You need a sturdy surface to mount the wheel to and also leaves room for the pedals on the floor (much tougher to accomplish with a console game than a PC game). Please note, this set does not include a clutch pedal (nor is the 'shifter' free moving) so the hard core driving sim fan will want the upgraded version.

Not the best wheel on the market but unbeatable at the price.

Using this for GT5. I really needed something just to compete in the nascar races because the ds3 controller just wasnt cutting it. Now after a little time I got the gold in the jeff gordon nascar school and getting better and better times all around in the online challenges. Ive heard that the G27 wheel is a bit more sensitive but if ut is then wow the driving force gt wheel is a great bargain.

Was trying to play Need for Speed with my son and could not drive the cars with the ps3 controller. This is a great wheel/pedal. Gives feedback with resistance and changes resistance when car is sliding. I was impressed with it, especially for the money. Pedals do slide a little especially if you brake hard (understandably)

USB cord must be used - at least it is long. Also has power adapter to plug in.
