Comments about Moab General Sampler (8.27 x 11.69", 24 Sheets):

As part of my journey deeper into digital photography, I have found my enjoyment of fine art printing as exciting as I once did working in the darkroom. To find the art print paper that would best complement my photography, I had to research and evaluate various standard and fine art "inkjet" papers by purchasing sample packs from different manufacturers. This enables direct side-by-side comparisons and experimentation with different paper qualities and properties, including weights, fibers and finishes. I had previously tried a sheet pack of Moab Colorado Fiber Gloss paper with great results, so I added a Moab's General Sample package to my evaluation project. My first impression is that Moab takes their sample package very seriously. It included a variety of papers that provided a broad set of contrasting, distinct papers, ranging from cotton rag to metallic. There were 11 sample types, two sheets of each that were labeled on the backside with the name, fiber, weight and finish. The sample paper arrives in a box with additional technical information via a flyer brochure. The sampler included:Entrada Rag Bright 190 & 300 and Rag Natural 190 & 300Lasel Photo Matte 235 and Exhibition Luster 300Somerset Museum Rag 300Moenkopi Kozo 110 and Unryu 55Slickrock Metallic Pearl 260 and Silver 300All my samples were put to the test using Epson's UltraChrome K3® pigment inks. The four Entrada Rags samples are cotton fiber, archival acid-free and lignin-free papers. They all have a very smooth surface texture compared to other rag papers and do print beautifully with that "artistic" look and feel. Very nice results, excellent color gamut, creating a museum look to each of the prints, especially using the neutral tone rag. The Lasel Exhibition Luster 300 is targeted at Epson's renowned Exhibition Fiber Paper. However, in my opinion, the Moab is notably superior. It has a richer feel and a finer looking 'lusterly' surface that printed sharp, uniform and accurate---especially in B/W. The Lasel Photo Matte had a typical weight and feel, but with a slightly shiner surface than other matte papers. The matte paper along with the Museum Rag 300 is useful for general work---school art projects, colorful diagrams, display boards. However, I'm not sure about the functional benefit or intended use between of the muslim and cotton rag papers. One favorable surprise was the inclusion of two Moenkopi papers, each with different surface finishes: Kozo and Unryu. These Moenkopi papers are made from mulberry and hemp fibers using traditional Japanese Washi techniques, which are then coated for use with inkjet printer inks. The Unryu paper was my favorite; it is a classic looking Japanese paper. It is delicate but formal with an ancient texture, a very refined touch and a deep neutral tone. I admit I treasure this paper, and the results using pigment inks from the Epson R3000 were remarkable, but I am still looking to find the right application for this paper other than my first inclination of wedding invitations. The final two papers to mention are the Slickrock Metallics: Silver 300 and Pearl 260. These papers are not just shiny, but reflective, bringing a true metallic look and feel to an inkjet paper. Black and white photos were the obvious trial application. The results of the Pearl 260 were stunning. Sample prints of Alaskan landscapes were extremely sharp with a very high level of contrast…or, as the professionals say, tonal separation. The Silver 300 was again very different, providing a much cooler blue-grey tone with great depth and black level contrast. I plan to continue working with the Metallic Sliver as it is an impressive paper; my comfort curve on the Pearl is yet a work in progress. After working with the papers supplied in the sample pack and reviewing the website and blogs, I believe Moab's approach to its fine art papers is very unique. Even the product names symbolize creative marketing and product innovation. Moab places considerable effort in the targeted application of their papers; some which are broad while others have very distinctive uses. The fine art products are of the highest quality, with emphasis placed on surfaces and coatings to enhance your best photos. The sample pack was fun to experiment with and brought awareness as it presented papers that I may never have considered for digital photo printing. Two or three of the papers became immediate favorites that I will purchase and continue working with. The Moab Sample Pack is worth the investment of time and money, and you may find one or two fine art papers that really enhance you work.

Comments about Moab General Sampler (8.27 x 11.69", 24 Sheets):

Used the sampler to try in a new Epson 4900. Moab papers are excellent quality, and this gave a good selection of their offerings. Interesting to compare brightness and tonality of papers in similar types. The Somerset Museum Rag 300 is a standout, a good balance of white and depth. Takes color printing very well, pleasing not too bright tone. Smoothness is appropriate for fine art prints without looking flat or textured. Entrada Rag White is bright white, Natural is on the yellow side. Both have good d-max and have their appropriate uses. Still working with the Semigloss and Luster.
Certainly a good way to try a mix of offerings. Wish it included Colorado Fiber samples too. With their reputation I am not dissatisfied with what I have seen.

Great way to see the capabilities and qualities of a variety of papers. ICC profiles, from their website, were easy to download and dead on accurate. Sure, I know it is a good marketing ploy to get you to try their paper, but it worked. Happy with what I found and I'll buy more.

What paper should I use for my fine art prints? Sample packs are a great way to answer that question. Try different textures and brightnesses to see what you like.
