Designed for hunters by a company full of hunters, Bushnell's 8x42 Legend HD Binocular proves once again that Bushnell is never a company to sit upon their laurels.  The Legends have long been regarded as a great hunter or birder's value, and the 2009 updates offer serious advantages over the prior generations.  Bushnell has been able to greatly increase the field of view with just a tiny decrease in eye relief, and that extra field surrounds your peripheral vision within the binocular.

The objective lenses now feature extra-low dispersion glass, which aims to eliminate chromatic aberration.  Other improvements include a facelift to the housing armor, magnesium construction to shave precious amounts of weight, and new anti-reflective internal lens coatings to maximize overall color rendition.

The 8x42 model is a standard entry for enthusiastic birders, and makes for a great all-around hunting and sporting unit.  This roof prism design offers a streamlined shape for better handling for most average-to-smaller hand.

Profoundly-wide field of view together with good 17mm of eye relief
"ED Prime Glass" extra-low dispersion objective lens elements focus light from red, green, and blue color spectrums to a tighter point for minimized color aberration
"Ultra WB Coating" broadband anti-reflective coatings throughout binocular aim to increase transmission values across full 380-750nm visible color spectrum
Rainguard HD external oil-and-water-repellent lens coatings minimize condensation droplet size, prevent fogging from your own breath, and ease cleaning regimen
PC-3 phase-coated BaK-4 roof prisms
Hybrid magnesium chassis significantly reduces weight
Newly-designed ridged rubber armoring with a particularly soft touch
Ridged, twist-up eyecups
Large, knobby center focus dial is easy to grab even while wearing gloves
Locking diopter ring
Bushnell's deluxe binocular harness is included

Everything that I observed with my sample has already been discussed. In comparison to my Nikon Monarch ATB: The field of view is noticeably wider. the Legend Ultra HD has a slightly warmer tint (I prefer the Nikon). In terms of resolution, contrast and low light abilities the Bushnell has a very slight edge. Again the Legend Ultra HD and Nikon Monarch ATB (several years old) are very very close. The sweet spot is wide 70-80%. There is little distortion near the very edges but you won't notice it unless you use it to view architecture. The focusing knob is more solid on the Nikon, the Bushnell has a loose plastic part inside this knob that makes a little bit of nose. The rubber cover of the Legend Ultra HD is thick (Perhaps overly so). My biggest complaint is the eyecups - not enough extension and poor quality (Nikon is much better here). This is the reason it got 4 stars. Besides the optics, the biggest plus is the Rainguard HD. I haven't used the binoculars yet but have used the Bushnell rifle scopes and it works. During this year's hunt my Monarch ATB fogged up and was unusable for a while. Bottom line: This is an excellent hunting binoculars. If you can live with the eyecups and too much (not too little) eye relief, it has wide FOV, excellent optics and Rainguard. Perfect hunting/wet weather binoculars.

IN THE BOX: The binos came with a nice (but large) protective case. Inside the case were three straps for use with the case an binos. For travel purposes the case is too large for my liking, but the size is required to accommodate all the accessories.

OPTICAL QUALITY: This is my first pair of roof prism binos. I'm finding the optical quality of the Bushnells to be excellent. I'm using these for birding and am impressed with the sharpness of the image.

THE DOWNSIDE - I'm giving this two stars because:

    (1) The diopter adjustment ring broke after the first few adjustments. It's made of flimsy plastic and I can see it breaking if you use it just once in awhile. If you are not the only user of the binos, this may get used frequently.

    (2) There is not enough friction on the eye relief adjustments to keep them set in my preferred position. I find I need to adjust the relief every time I pick them up.

    (3) The retainers for the rear (IE, the large end) lens covers are inadequate. If you are intending to keep the covers attached to the binos, you will find these are constantly falling off. I'm sure I'm going to lose these before long.

If this wasn't a cross-border purchase, I'd probably return them and look for something of better build quality. Getting them repaired is also going to be a hassle.

They are OK value for money, but some minor design tweaks and better quality control on Bushnell's side would make them a more competitive product. Other reviewers are reporting a better experience with this product so perhaps I just have a poor copy, don't know.

Comments about Bushnell 8x42 Legend Ultra HD Binocular:

The Bushnell 8x42 Legends are my first pair of decent binoculars, and while I've only had a few tries with them I've been very impressed with the optics. While I haven't had much experience with binoculars I do own some very high-end camera lenses, so have a fair idea what to look for.

At the price I've been amazed with the optics in these, really bright and clear with no major optical flaws. Focussing is quick and smooth. They've already travelled to New Zealand with me, and were easy to pack into my suitcase, and light and small enough to tuck into my camera bag to carry around all day. You can hang them around your neck and hardly notice they're there. I even took them along to the opera a few weeks ago just for a try from the balcony, and they were small enough to discreetly hold to my face, while putting me right into the middle of the action. They really made things pop; just lovely. Am pretty keen to try them out next time I attend a sporting event as well.

The kit they come in is also useful, with a bigger solid case and a small cloth bag for transportation, and a choice of straps depending on your needs. The binoculars themselves have a nice soft-touch feel. The main negative I've noticed, as others have identified, is to do with the flimsy attachment of the lens caps and their ostensibly being able to be left attached to the binoculars once they're off the lens - I can see these being relatively easy to lose and it may be better to just take them off completely as you would with a camera lens cap.

Before finding these on B&H I was going to pay more than double the price in our local market, so I feel like these are an absolute steal at the price here. They may not quite be perfect, but on a value for money basis from what I've seen so far I'm giving these a five.

Buy them and you will feel the same way, I am sure.

Use this binocular for birdwatching and I prefer 8x42 because it has a wider view and it's less shaky than a 10x42. I tried some other binoculars before this one, even more expensive ones. But this one has ED glass and therefor less chromatic aberration. Lightweight compared to many other binoculars with same built quality. The price here on B&H is very good and the service and shipment is excellent! You won't regret buying this binoculars.Cons: The lens protection cap is very loose, I don't use it in the field only when it is stored.

No barrel distortion, no aberrations worth noting. Great range, diopter adjustment worked slow but nice and steady except for a gap between the two directions, same for the focus. At the price, there's really nothing that one can complain about. Compares very well with the rest in the price range.

Comments about Bushnell 8x42 Legend Ultra HD Binocular:

I use the binoculars primarily for bird watching in all conditions. Before settling on the Bushnell 8X42, I did side-by-side comparison with comparably priced Nikon Monarch and Vortex binoculars. The Bushnell Legend had noticeably less color fringing and better close up focusing (6.5 ft). Brightness was equal to or better than the Nikon and Vortex. I also compared my Legend to a comparable Eagle Optics binoc. The Legend as equal to or better than the Eagle Optics unit and much lighter weight and better price. The only thing I found lacking was less eye relief than I would like. I also purchased a pair of eyeshields that allow me to hold the binoculars away from my eyes (more eye relief) with out increasing intrusive side glare. I strongly recommend eye shields for any serious birder.

Binos have really come a long way...

          By Xyrium

          from NJ

Comments about Bushnell 8x42 Legend Ultra HD Binocular:

It's difficult to do much better than the current crop of sub $300 binos out there from Vanguard, Nikon, Bushnell, and Vortex. Though none are made in the good ol' USA, and thus quality is hit or miss from pair to pair, when you get a good pair, they are really good.

My pair gathered light extremely well, and focus was slow and steady (preferred by me). Aberration at the edges was minimal, and the image quality was very high throughout the field of view. If you only want to stock one pair for hunting, birding, etc., this set of 8x42s are quite good. 5 stars for overall value.

I use these for bird watching, replacing older inferior binocs. When I researched on-line for recommendations from serious birders, these received very good reviews for their size, class and price range. I can confirm that they have a clear, bright image, easy to focus while tracking flying birds; they fit in my hands well and are excellent used with my glasses. Some reviews I've read of this particular binoc had a problem with the eye rings--no problem here. Yes, lens cap covers aren't the tightest, but a minor complaint. While they aren't waterproof, their special coating has worked well against fogging. Over all excellent binoculars at an excellent price--best price on the internet when I hunted, with free shipping.

The site mentioned that binoculars provided on a safari are not always of good quality. We rarely use binoculars but when we received these we fell in love with them. WOW! Light weight, small, easy to use and to pack. Perfection. We would like to purchase another pair but will share. Thank you!

Comments about Bushnell 8x42 Legend Ultra HD Binocular:

Use=Bird Watching, Hunting, watching Sporting Events. I studied the specs of many glasses for months and I am picky. When comparing binoculars, I value Field of View very highly. These glasses are superior in FOV and IP Distance for my eyes - clarity and image quality is amazing. I bought and returned the Nikon Monarch because I couldn't live with their more narrow field of view. I wear glasses and the eye relief is excellent. The ED glass is a bonus in the under $[$] price point. They're bright, ergonomically feel good in the hand and the armoring material has the right "grippy" feel to it. I am beyond satisfied with Legend Ultra HDs - extremely happy with them.

I got these to use with my daughter for birding. The image is super sharp, they feel well made and I think they will last a lifetime. The lens caps do fall off very easily. Also, it appears that they are made in the USA, but upon closer inspection they are actually made in China which was pretty disappointing for me.

Comments about Bushnell 8x42 Legend Ultra HD Binocular:

I absolutely love these binoculars. Wish I had bought them years ago. They are one of my best all-time purchases. Instant satisfaction. Because I can not handle anything around my neck, my big concern was whether I could handle the weight. This has turned out to be a non-issue. Much to my surpise, the Legend Ultra HD Binoculars are a breeze to carry around with the back harnass strap that they come with, which wearing makes them readily available for use at a instant's notice. I had trouble holding my old pair of binoculars steady enough to focus well when birdwatching. This also is no longer an issue. It is easy to track birds in flight with the 8x42 Legend Ultra HD Binoculars. Other pluses for me include: 1.) Not having to take my glasses off when using these binoculars. Likewise, the eyecups are a cinch to adjust when my husband who does not wear glasses uses them; 2.) Focus is incredibly easy and quick to adjust; 3.) Up close focus at 6.5' feet. It is wonderful to be able to see things, especially birds up close from afar so clearly and to not have my breath fog up the lens which happened with my old pair. The Legend Ultra HD Binoculars have given me a new set of eyes and extraordinary vision. Priceless.

Comments about Bushnell 8x42 Legend Ultra HD Binocular:

I have bought these for my last vacation and had some minor astro use in mind.

where I think 8x42 was a reasonable decission for exactly that purpose (weighting size, hand-hold-ability & aperture/exit pupil), the optics definetly are more than worth the price - but I cannot realy compare it, as I am rather new to the binocular world.

I was somewhat disapointed by bushnell - with my first shipment - the diopter adjustment ring was broken.
But B&H solved that issue in no time, very flexible and to me totallycost neutral - which is a real achievment (overseas order with customs TAX involved).

BIG compliment to the support team of B&H.

As for the product itself - I would by them again.
I would love to have a pair of Zeiss though - but I am not willing to pay the premium - I am an amateur - and the Legend HD is waaaay better than my occasionaly using them.

I will be using these binoculars daily at my home in Brazil to bird watch. However I will be traveling to Kruger national park and bought them so I would be better able to view the wildlife in the park. After using them at home , I can see clearly why they received such high reviews.

I used to sell optics - everything from 50-1500$. I was very impressed with the qulity for the price. This would have easily compared to 500-800$ optics not that long ago, Very sharp, good colour transmission, good close focus, good eye relief. Very enjoyable to use. Even with the fairly wide field of view there is little fall off atthe edge of the image.lower lens caps look like they will get lost easily, but I have lost almost every pair on any bino I have known.
