Product Highlights
  • Arca-Style Leveling Quick Release Clamp
  • Detent Pin (Requires Plate)
  • Supports 25 lb (11.3kg)
  • Same as Model 1150 but with Bubble Level

The Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head is a sturdy, heavy duty, yet compact ball head that is similar in design to most conventional ball heads (unlike the unique Ultimate head). However, the GV2 model has been improved so that it can be locked down when the head is in the 90° orientation, which effectively turns this ball head into a gimbal-style head. This will now allow the camera to pivot around its center-point, gimbal style.

The GV2 features a low profile design, and sports all-rubber knurled knobs that are more comfortable to use, especially in extreme weather.

The built-in industry-standard Arca-Swiss style quick release clamp makes it compatible with the many different plates available from Arca-Swiss, Kirk, Wimberly, Really Right Stuff, Foba, Novoflex, etc. The clamp also feature a spring-loaded detent pin that projects into the pockets or windows that are cut into the bottom of most manufactures (Acratech, Kirk, Really Right Stuff, etc.) quick release plates. This detent pin will prevent the plate from accidentally sliding out in the event that the knob is partially loosened.

In addition, this model uses a "leveling" QR clamp, which features a large 15mm bulls-eye bubble level that extends out of the side of the clamp.

      Light, solid, excellent

Comments about Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head:

This is good stuff. My choice came down to this or the arca p0. For a few reasons, I went with this, and I love it. Really well made, absolutely solid with my 5d and 70-200, the largest I'll probably be using for a while. Simple, positive, versatile, dirt proof. Nice clamp, works great with all my plates, quick knob release; I don't miss a lever. I also don't miss the pano ability because I don't do that a lot; if I want to, I can just level the tripod. Beautifully made gear, and US made to boot. Recommended!

Comments about Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head:

Purposely replaced RRS BH40 for this head because of so many favorable reviews by other users, quality machining, finish, lighter weight and Gimbal head feature for use with my Canon 400 f5.6L, and on occasion Canon 1.5 converter. Everything about it works as smooth as silk, the Gimbal head feature is excellent because it allows me to do all that I could ask for with the equipment I use. As others have said, it locks down rock solid, with no drift, when all knobs have been tightened.Looking for a ball head,…look no further, this could very easily be the one you need. But finally aside from how well a piece of gear works for you, is what kind of customer service can you expect if the need arises. First-hand experience makes it easy for me to say the folks at Acratech are 'down home' right friendly and more than willing to stand behind their products. If the need for anything they manufacture arises in the future they've got my business.

Mounted on a Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber Tripod for an exceptionally light and stable platform. Very impressed with the engineering and construction quality of the GV2. Primarily used with Canon 6D with battery grip and a variety of lenses including 70-200 f2.8 and 300 f4. Locks in tightly and provides the rigidity you would expect. Have only played with the gimbal feature but appears to work well.

Comments about Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head:

After reading an extensive coverage of reviews from all over the internet I confidently ordered this head from B&H. Fast shipping and delivery, as always. As soon as I had it in my hands I knew I'd made the right decision. Not only is it's overall aesthetics pleasing to the eye, but even more impressive is the design, craftsmanship, quality finish and light weight. Fairly priced, in my opinion, considering everything about it, including the unique Gimbal head feature and only weighing 15.2 oz. Keeping my photo/backpacking weight to a minimum while still retaining as much equipment flexibility is paramount. And although I own a RRS BH40 the GV2 suits my needs much better, and does everything, plus more, just as well,…even better when taking the Gimbal head feature into consideration. My heaviest load is the Canon 5DMKII, 400 f5.6L and1.4 converter. Together it all works flawlessly providing a wide range of positioning, up, down, and around, to the left or right. Once everything is tightening it's LOCKED DOWN and you're good to go. Now here's the 'frosting on the cake', so to speak, customer service from this manufacturer. By my own mishandling of this head when affixing it to the tripod's spider plate I cosmetically defaced the surface. Brand new, and in not paying more attention to what I was doing I 'messed up'. Wow, was I aggravated, and disappointed. Calling Acratech to see if I could buy a replacement part I was connected with Scott, owner of Acratech, who took the time to patiently, and courteously explain that there was no assurance in sending me the part that it would fit properly. Instead if I returned it to them he'd replace the part so that the fit was correct,…not to loose, nor to tight,…at N/C! I'm doubtful one could expect that sort of customer service from most, if not, all the other manufacturers out there. Here's another fact worth noting in considering an AcraTech product. Unlike many with a 1 or 5 year warranty AcraTech products come with a 10 year warranty. If you're reasonable, and nice to Scott maybe even longer. I most certainly would recommend this GV2 if it fits your shooting style/needs. It really is a first-class piece of photo gear that I'm sure will last a long time. P.S. Scott, if you happen to read this 'thank you', again, for your generous service and willingness to correct this customer's mistake.

Lightweight and compact yet incredibly stable and sturdy with my Canon 5dm3 and 24-70/f2.8 or 70-200/f2.8. Prefer it to my RRS BH 55 which I subsequently sold on @. Currently mounted on Manfrotto 055XPROB legs.

Works well. Quality construction. I use this to mount cameras with Kirk L brackets. Would be a little bit better if it used a quick release mechanism instead of a twist knob.

Comments about Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head:

I matched my Acratech GV2 head with the Feisol CT3442 legs (5 star legs also) and could not be happier. This combination is light as a feather, quick to use and can handle good sized loads. I shoot landscapes, nature and portraits. My largest set-up is my D800 with grip, 70-200 f/2.8 VRII and TC20III. It can easily hold them and more. It locks tight and the tension knob is very effective. I love the features on the GV2. The gimbal feature is not a gimmick. Although not a dedicated gimbal head it works very well. The open ball design is fantastic also. It is very easy to keep clean and very smooth to operate. This head is awesome. Highly recommended!

Comments about Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head:

I am a action sports / nature photographer. I just recently purchased the Acratech GV2 and couldn't be happier with it. Not only is it a fantastic looking piece of equipment, but the functionality is top notch. The action of the ball is silky smooth, and the knobs are all sturdy and tighten down with ease. I have yet yo experience any slippage of the clamp or ball even with my 70-200. The ball holds tight and strong. The weight of the ball is is great as well, and paired with a pair of carbon legs, I have not found it too heavy when trekking or riding with it on my camera pack. My only gripe is having to purchase the plate separately.

Comments about Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head:

An exceptionally stable ball design without any discernible walk-off during tightening. The tensioner can be adjusted to give a good feel without being sticky. All the knobs work smoothly without requiring excessive torque to lock down each adjustment. My only complaint is rather minor in that the available rotation from landscape to portrait is almost exactly 90 degrees. So your tripod has to be level or half the time you just will not be able to rotate far enough.

Comments about Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head:

I did much reading and talking to pro friends before deciding on a ball head. There are other good choices, but considering best value and performance for the dollar, I opted for the GV2. I am VERY happy. If I did not already have Acratech's leveling base (very handy) I would have gotten their GP head, which converts upside-down into a leveling head for panorama work.

This head supports my D800 and 70-200/2.8 and 300/4 easily at all angles— it's rated to 25lbs iirc. I use this for general use except video ... it's not a fluid/pan-tilt head. I think a ball head is more versatile than other types, though if you use very long lenses you might want to get a true gimbal head like the Wimberly or Acratech's long lens head. For video, they are introducing a hybrid video fluid/ball head in a few months, and the photos look very intriguing. I've spoken to Scott, the owner at Acratech, about it and I think he has a great design coming.

The construction, fit, and finish on the Acratech products is superb, and they are USA made. It is light, just under 1lb, and combined with my Induro CT213 it's less than 5lbs ... perfect for carrying everywhere. I couldn't be happier. B&H offers a range of Acratech heads and accessories, and their panorama accessories are worth getting too.

The main thing I love about this head is the open design of the ball, which keeps it clean. Users report dropping the head right into the dirt and sand, and cleaning it out is easy. This is much better than the enclosed ball designs if you work outdoors, imho. The other thing I like is the gimbal feature this head has, and it really works with anything up to about a 400/5.6... it's wonderful, and I don't know another head that does this. You have to watch the videos at Acratech's website to see the features in action.

Oh, a word on clamps. Acratech offers both a lever QR clamp with safety catch (something their competition often doesn't) and a knob clamp. This means you can generally carry your camera on the tripod safely. Their lever clamp adjusts for slight variations in camera/lens plate width, which is wonderful. I opted for the knob clamp, and while it may be a few secs slower, it's very secure and tightens down on any other brand lens/camera plates securely. It's personal preference ... if you read online both type clamps have their fans. I don't think there is a speed advantage with the lever, and I like the security of the knob. I'd feel fine with the lever clamp too; it's a tossup! The knob clamp with level does have the advantage that you can adjust the level without taking the camera off the head, whereas the lever clamp has a bubble level that is underneath the camera plate.

The estimable gear guru Thom Hogan uses this head on his lighter tripod. I am very happy to recommend the Acratech without reservation.

In looking for a great ballhead for my new Gitzo legs, I wanted something high-quality and simple, Arca-compatible, and capable of comfortably holding a big body with 24-70 f/2.8 lens hanging off the front (no lens collar). The GV2 delivers. All adjustments are quick, easy, and precise. Everything about this ballhead screams quality and simplicity. Acratech is delivering something that no other company can touch at this price point, and it's pretty comparable to ballheads costing quite a bit more. The photos online seem to make this ballhead look like it's cheaper quality than it really is. The minute you open the box, you'll know you're holding a quality piece of equipment that won't need to be replaced anytime soon. You won't regret this purchase.

I did a lot of research before I purchased this ballhead. The design looked the most functional to me, and I read a great number of reviews on this and other ballheads. It is a fair amount of money to spend and I didn't want to regret it. Being a pro photographer, I knew it would get a lot of use and I needed it to function well, re-adjust quickly & easily, and last. I have now shot over 100 sessions and I am very pleased. I made the right choice. I only wish I had also purchased the Acratech Quick-Release Locking Lever Clamp. I'm sure I will be getting one in the near future.

In my opinion, if you are considering this ballhead, go ahead and pull the trigger. I am very happy with its performance in every way.

I was using a Novaflex mini ball head for along time.
but this Acratech Gv2 ballhead, by far, is great and the best . the gimbal portion is what sold me. the only thing i dislike is the separate camera plate (cost, very expensive) for this ballhead. other than that its great.. no issues.

I compared high quality heads from Kirk, Really Right Stuff, Markins, and Arca-Swiss. For what this made-in-USA unit can do I couldn't see any reason to spend more money, especially if I end up with compromises.

It is a pleasure to use. Rubber knobs, smooth operation, portrait feature, panning ability with degree markings, bubble level and very strong construction. Put this at the top of your list when going head hunting.

I bought this head after debating for weeks between this and a RRS ball head. I am so glad I bought this. I use this head with a Mamiya RZ67 Pro IID medium format camera and this thing is secure at any angle. It is so lightweight and well made it should cost twice as much based on what RRS and arca swiss charge. By far the most bang for your buck but in now way a subpar or ameteur head. Used with a RRS arca plate with no issues and firm grip.

This brand was recommended to me by one of my photography instructors after my camera took a tumble while attached to a cheap, lightweight, bargain(?) tripod set-up (with my brand new Canon L-series 24-105 mm lens attached). Everything emerged mostly unscathed (minor dings on the lens hood). I've paired this ball head with a set of Manfrotto aluminum tripod legs (15.4 lb. load capacity). The whole set-up is rock steady with no lens drift. I'm fairly certain my camera will be taking no more tumbles.

First off I am an engineer and I love the design- it is so open and simple. Nothing to catch, clog or contain dirt. If it gets dirty, just blow it off as the open design makes it very easy to clean.

Very, very sturdy - since you can pre-tighten the drag- once you set the camera position it doesn't move. With my old ball head I had to anticipate a bit of droop and set the camera high. With this one, when you set it - it is set. I use a canon and 70-200 lens so even with that weight there is no problems.

By flipping the ball over, you can use this as a gimble for nice panoramic shots- even when the tripod is not level.

I wouldn't use any other head after this one!
