I use a flash on camera, often in bounce position. Sometimes I use it off camera (manual exposure mode) for portraits, close-ups, and other photos when diffused side lighting adds depth via soft shadows.

On camera with flash head facing straight ahead, results are pretty good. When tilting or swiveling head, shots are always underexposed. It is as if the camera and flash are not speaking to each other on how much light has been returned through the lens, but merely setting flash power based on camera focus distance.

If you take only family snapshots, this is a bargain compared with the lowest end Oly flash.

But if you are serious about lighting manipulation, either spend a fortune on a high end Olympus flash, or go with the Vivitar 385hv automatic flash (non-dedicated), The latter has been a professional workhorse for about 35 years, and costs about the same as the 283 toy.

Comments about Vivitar DF 283 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Olympus TTL:

The DF283 is old technology, but the simplicity with its TTL cannot be beat. Perfect for beginners for the price and the user-friendliness.

However, if you want to get the most out of the flashgun (by that I mean a year or so of use), you have to buy a replacement plan just in case. DF283s are notorious for having short life expectancies. I personally had to get my first one replaced after less than fifty cycles.

Comments about Vivitar DF 283 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Olympus TTL:

I use this flash as a back up to my Olympus FL50. Though I haven't had a real "need" to use it, I put it through some test drives to ensure it's compatability with my camera system.
I find it excellent as an outdoor fill flash at real life distances. A flash with only enough power to use within 10 ft is useless to me. My DF 283 works well out to 20 ft.
The only negative that I've found is that it does tend to eat batteries rather fast. However any flash with this kind of power is expected to. Also, you have to pay attention to the manual "zoom" if you want to use it.

This is absolutely a great flash for a novice like me. You mount it on the camera and it does the rest... It also comes with a protective case...
My grand kids are now in full view and clear as a bell... I would definitely
        recommend this flash to anyone.

Comments about Vivitar DF 283 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Olympus TTL:

There are two kinds of flashes, automatic and dedicated TTL. Automatic merely works separately the camera, flashing on command and doing all the exposure calcs by itself, often at odds with a smart camera. Dedicated TTL actually communicates with the camera before and during the flash for precise exposure control including zoom and focus/distance info. This is the latter. Real TTL integration with the Evolt. No settings no adjustments, it just works seamlessly with the camera. Take one picture at 3 feet, snap the next at 30, the flash and camera work together for perfect exposures.MUCH cheaper than OEM or top tier flashes, but better quality than the cheapie no-name [*]junk that MAYBE will work out of the box.Good combo of function/features/price.The good: quality construction, strong flash, long range, much needed strong IR emitter for autofocus - always an issue on the Evolts, rotates up/down and side to side for bounce. The bad: NO external power input or recharger, so pack lots of AA's which can go quickly with really dark/distance shooting. No remote capability, must be connected to the camera, so it's not for studio work, but then who would buy this low end for that. And annoyingly, the battery polarity is VERY POORLY marked. And it's not the fastest recycling flash on the block, so no streams of quick pics - even with fresh batteries. 5 SECONDS for recycle on night/long, does better for fills. If it were faster, I'd give it 5 stars for the money.
