I bought two of these flashes to start shooting off-camera flash with. The product is great and it is so much cheaper than a 430ex2 or a 580ex2. The flash is powerful and the AF helps so much in low-light situations. Off-camera the wireless optical slave works great indoors but it is usually impractical to use the optical slave in the sun. For this i will order radio triggers in the near future. The only reason I do not give this five stars is because a few days after i got the, one broke and refused to fire under any methods of triggering. This seems to be a totally random problem however because the other flash unit i have still works fine.

Get side mount bracket to enable fast change of flash direction for optimum bounce.

Power On/Off and slave On/Off are very easy to accidentally switch.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

I use it off camera. Slaved. For macro work.
Built in slave works only on low light.
        Day light, Never!
Sometimes, say 20 pervcent of the time.
It won't start up. A firm slap on the side and it starts up.
        Not worth the money.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

I'm a photo student and about to wrap up my Associate's Degree in Photography. For lighting class, I was told to purchase a flash, but something cheaper just to experiment before splurging on a more expensive one in the future. Doing that was one of the worst mistakes I could've ever made. This flash is AWFUL. It only works when it's screwed on my mount a certain way, which always makes it fall off. When it is connected, the flash will pop once or twice and then stop working. I've changed the batteries each time but the problem persists. When I screw it on securely, it won't work. I've tried screwing it on right and left just to see if that'd make a difference, it didn't. It only works if it's BARELY screwed on and then only works for a few shots, then falls off the mount. It's extremely frustrating and annoying to work with, and if I get it in the right position, I'm forced to either shoot vertically or horizontally the entire shoot or else it will stop working. This flash is just awful, I hate it, I wish there was I way I could get rid of it but I honestly want to take a bat to it 78% of the time. PLEASE, if you are considering this product, don't. Save an extra 100$ and go for something better.

So far I have used this product for everything. It flashes well and i had no problem getting it up and running. The only thing that could be better is the recycling time. But it hasn't given me any problems so far and it didn't totally drain me of cash either!

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

I shoot A LOT of pictures at a local school, but not many with flash. I bought this flash in 2010 for those few occasions where I can use a flash and need one. Until this month it worked fine. It's only got a few hundred flashes on it in two years. Last week I pulled it out to use it at a family event and it will not charge and the display only partially comes on. Changing batteries did not help. I contacted Vivitar through their web site. A few days later I received a reply stating that they only swap out warranty exchanges, but do not provide after warranty repair service. They recommended I contact a local shop for repair. After checking with a few, I have yet to find a shop that will work on it. The Vivitar web site does not list any authorized repair shops and they did not offer any suggestions in their reply. This will be my last Vivitar product of any type. Spend your money on something else.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

This DF 383 flash was purchased for use as a manual flash triggered by other flash units using it's optical slave. It is has decent light output for a flash smaller in size than many others. I like the manual controls and attached flash diffuser. Control buttons are intuitive and easy to use. I can't speak to it's ability to properly expose images through E-TTL on Canon cameras, but it's light output was measured by light meter to be about 2/3 stop less than the published GN (typical for many flashes I'm afraid). Initial powerup is slow, but recycle times are adequate. The backlight on the LCD only lights 1 side of the LCD and is severely inadequate. The optical slave function is sensitive, but not extremely so.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

The Vivitar DF 383 is a good flash and can works well with my Canon 60D, and I would recommend it. There is one limitation when used with the Canon 60D in that it cannot be used in the manual mode without the camera displaying an "err 20" code. The display will also say to either turn the camera off and then on or to take out the batteris and then replace them to resolve the error. It seems Canon has made their cameras to not work smoothly with third party flashes. I can work with the flash and the 60D in auto mode. Also I can use the flash compensation in the camera menu to adjust the intensity of the flash while still using this flash unit. I plan to buy a Canon flash unit as soon as I can afford one.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

I plan to use these as extra light to my 580. At 1/4th the price, I really did not have much choice. Some difference to the 580 is that they do not seem as heavy duty or well made. They are not quite as powerful and they seem to take longer to recharge. At full power about 8-9 seconds. The buttons are a little small so what I did was take a spot of bright gold marker on them so I could see them better in the dark. Also, if you have them off camera using the slave, they will shut down after too short of a time and you have to go around to start them all up again. On camera wouldn't be such a problem. I have yet to see how well they do in the field. For a pro photographer doing weddings I think the slow recycle and less power than the 580 would be frustrating. However, for a less expensive alternative and for extra lights or back up I think they will work fine.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

I haven't had a chance to use this flash too much yet but so far so good. It seems to have all the power I was looking for. I am alittle hesitant about the foot being plastic and the battery door seems like it could break easily

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

I have use this flash twice once at a wedding and once at an eagle Scout ceremony. It is powerful and TTL works wonderfully. Recharge time was a tad slow for wedding but that is my only complaint.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

Great price for my budget and that it is my first flash. I use it for a fill flash when using shutter priority to eliminate any movement. Slow Recycle time makes this unusable for continuous shooting.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

My first choice was the Canon 430X, but I decided to try this one, was closer to my budget.

I use it with a Canon Rebel T1i, it works great!

I use it mainly for indoor shots, so most of the time I need to tilt the head, the communication with the camera works great.

The battery lasts over 100 takes if you don't shoot them all together in the same day.

I absolutely would recommend this flash if you are on a budget and won't be using it on a studio or to work with multiple speedlites.

I've owned this for a few weeks now and use it regularly for my indoor pictures. I haven't tried it for outdoor situations yet but the flash is extremely bright and lots of settings to choose from. It is like a new camera when using the flash.

In just using the flash everynow and then it seems like a very good alternative to the more expensive flashes, based on other reviews though I did purchase an extended warranty.

Comments about Vivitar DF 383 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Canon TTL:

I am not a professional photographer. I am just an average photographer.
I loved this flash when it worked. It died 8 months after I bought it. I've owned several other Vivitar products which also failed within a year.
The Vivitar tech support guy I spoke with was playing video games while speaking with me. I was trying to find out how to fix my flash but he recommended I send it back to them to get it fixed. I gave up and trashed the flash. I expected it to last longer for the money I paid for it.
