Ordered this unit as a replacement for an old HP Laser/Fax Printer and a DELL 3100cn color laser printer in the home-office. I debated this for a bit due to all the mixed reviews but am pleased with this unit. Being an IT guy this was no better or worst concerning the install and setup in the past but might trip up a "newbie" especially a Mac user.

    My environment:
    >Apple Laptop (Lion)
    >Apple iMac (Snow Leopard)
    >Dell Desktop (Win 7)
    >iPads and Android phones and tablets.
    >Netgear 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router

Dell and Printer is wired (networked) into the Netgear, while all other devices are wireless.

    Installation:
    > Unpacked and connected the Printer to the network.
    > Logged into Netgear to find the IP address of the printer
    > Opened a browser and web into the printer to change the IP one that I preferred. ***BIG NOTE not in any documentation included with the printer: username is: Admin and password is: sysAdmin.
    > Downloaded updated drivers from Konica's website and installed correct versions on the PC and Apple (used the OSX 10.6.x on both Apples).

    From the PC:
    > Inserted the disk and ran the installer.
    > Followed the steps but provided my preferred IP address.
    > Named the printer
    > Closed out of the screen and done.

    From the Mac:
    > Ran the downloaded installer.
    > Open System Preferences and selected Print and Scan
    > Clicked on the "+" and selected the printer
    > Left the default settings
    > Closed out of the screen and done.

At the time of writing this do the additional step to update the firmware to version 1.23 as it solves the fan issue by putting the printer sleep 30 secs after a printing. To install v1.23 requires a PC and a USB cable while v1.09 can be done by an Apple or PC using a USB cable. Just download the appropriate version, connect the computer to the printer and run the installer. It will handle the rest.

The only drawback of printer I have seen so far is that the mobile print app from Konica Minolta (ipad and android) does not detect the printer even if the IP address is given. So there is no mobile/tablet printing using this printer. This is not too big of a deal for me since most paper content needed has been done on a computer.

It has been 2 weeks so it is a bit early to comment about toner life but printing and scanning has been nice. The unit prints vivid colors and produced some sharp business cards.

Don't run from this machine it is a little GEM especially for the price.

Good value for the money but was disappointed in the fan noise running for a half hour after a print job. Called support about it and was told it was necessary to remove heat from fuser. Found that you could set it to energy saver and the fan would turn off in 5 minutes. I've had numerous printers that had fan noise only while printing but not after printing. I am waiting on a response from support about a magenta stripe down the left side of every color print job that is printed. This started occurring after the first 30 pages of printing, mostly B&W.

After a few months of use, I have to say it was a worthy purchase. I've always wanted but couldn't afford a color laser printer until this came along, and having all the additional features of scanning and faxing was a needed bonus for a small office like mine.

The software for the Mac OS X side is a little lacking, but third-party applications I found quickly made up for it. I have it working on Mountain Lion and Windows 7 64-bit.

I bought this for my home. If the scanner worked over my network using a mac computer I would give this a 5 out of 5. It is an excellent high resolution color laser printer. No one else online seems to be able to scan over the network on macs. The only workaround is to plug in your USB to the printer. I am too far away from my mac to do that.

AFTER BUYING AND TRASHING 4 OTHER PRINTERS IT WAS SUGGESTED (BY GRANDDAUGHTER!) THAT I BUY KONICA BECAUSE SHE HAS HAD HERS FOR SEVERAL YEARS, BUYS LESS INK THAN I AND HAS HAD NO PROBLEMS. WE BOUGHT IT AND, AFTER USING IT LOTS (PREPARING AND PRINTING SEVERAL PAPERS FOR FAMILY) I AM CONPLETELY SATISFIED WITH MINE. IT PRINTS FASTER, NEATER-PAPERS THAN I EXPECTED.

I use this to print color proofs for my sign business. The colors are great and the color print time is pretty good. Much faster than my old inkjet printer. The auto doc feeder works very good. I have used it with the scan feature to scan in documents to email. It was fairly easy to setup and get running. The only down side is the cost of the color toner cartridges. But all color laser toner is expensive. But for me, the quality of the prints is well worth it.

Comments about Konica Minolta magicolor 1690MF Network Color All-in-One Laser Printer:

This was purchased to replace an ancient HP inkjet unit used almost solely as a fax machine. The 1690mf is not our primary printer, nor is it number two (we have monochrome and color laser printers). It's role is as a fax, scanner, and backup printer. So the fact that it prints at 5ppm in color is not a problem for us. We also decided to get out of the ink jet business, with the exception of a photo printer.

So far, the unit has met our expectations, if not exceeding them (considering the price).

The Good: The setup was fairly easy, although unpacking it took some time (they tape down everything that can move, a plus for shipping). Color looks good, the fax operates well and has several options (standalone or as a computer device), the scanner unit seems to work well. As a printer, it churns out good hard copy without any issues. I have it set up with a static address on our network, and everything found it fine (all Windows 7 systems). With the software, it is also noticed as a network scanner. Updated drivers are available on the Konica Minolta web site. There were some additional software utilities that I think are largely for using it with the USB interface. Overall, it is a complete package that seems well built.

The Bad: It is not tiny in stature (I actually consider this a plus for laser units). Some of the terminology in the menus may be confusing (I downloaded and read the Reference Guide, which is more thorough than the user manuals in explaining items). It is noisy (a fan) when it kicks on, and it draws enough power to dim the lights and cause a UPS attached to the same circuit to cycle on and off while it is active. It is not a speed demon, but at this price point, that should be expected.

General Comments: Both my wife and I work at home, so we have a somewhat sophisticated home network and some specific needs. This unit was an upgrade replacement from the old HP OfficeJet. The footprint is not much larger, although it is substantially taller. Toner is available from various places online, including B&H, and are less than my HP Color LaserJet with the same capacity (for the high capacity Konica cartridges).

Again, download and read the Reference Guide. That will save some head scratching. Also, I always put printers on static addresses so their address does not move around on the network.

The Konica Minolta site is good, although for some reason the 64-bit Windows 7 drivers are at the bottom of the page (the 32-bit are on top), below the Mac OS offerings. If you go to the site, just be sure to scroll down near the bottom if you need 64-bit drivers.

The markings on the phone line jacks are not very clear. Twice I have hooked the incoming line to the pass-through jack of the unit, which obviously does not work. Also, if you connect something from the pass-through jack, the unit will wake up whenever that device is used (it did with a computer modem attached to it). I would recommend splitting the line before the unit, not using the unit as the splitter.

One other note, if the incoming line is answered but is a hang-up (wrong number, telemarketer, anything but an incoming fax), the unit will light up the error indicator and display a communications error. If unacknowledged, this does NOT prevent it from answering subsequent incoming calls.

Overall, we are happy with this unit and, assuming it holds up (and I expect it will), would buy it again. Keep in mind it is a low-cost laser multifunction unit. It will serve a home office, small office, or home environment quite well. Anyone needing something that churns out a lot color print or copies may find it too slow, but probably should be looking at the next level of units, anyway.

So far, it gets my recommendation.

Comments about Konica Minolta magicolor 1690MF Network Color All-in-One Laser Printer:

I bought a Konica Minolta 1690MF last year. I did only 800 printings in black and white with it, but then it appears a "3C10" on the LCD display that blocks everything on the printer. I contacted the sales service but it answered me that this error is irreparable.
So It means that the Konica Minolta magicolor 1690MF printer lasts only 800 printings.
So please look for other models if you want to get a reliable printer !

We use this multifunction in our library as fax machine basically. Some of the staff uses it as a copier. But the best function that our patrons use is the scanning option to USB. What a time saver. Great product.

Comments about Konica Minolta magicolor 1690MF Network Color All-in-One Laser Printer:

I got tired of dry ink cartridges and wanted a basic color laser printer, hopefully with fax and scanning. The 1690MF is the only one in a price range comparable to an ink-jet. It's a great value!

It is fast and quiet, includes a document feeder plus flat bed scanning, and network support with scan to any computer or to email sent directly by the printer - in PDF or several other formats. The quality is excellent but those needing a high-end photo printer should look elsewhere.

There is plenty of documentation, about a half dozen various guides and manuals on CD. Unfortunately much of the information states the obvious, ie "click to turn the feature on" without much explanation of what the feature is, how it might be used, or what else should be done to make it work. There are a few applications included which seem to be aimed at offices with a large number of printers to be managed. It turns out there is a web based interface on the printer itself which allows easy setup from any browser once you know it's IP address and default pw of "sysAdmin". LSU (Local Setup Utility) is an application that does the same when connected via USB. But even LSU was confounding because the starting window did not show the connected printer. You can use LSU to set the IP address and after that configure the printer from a browser - just type the IP address in the URL window. Another option is to set your router to reserve a specific IP address for the printer and have the printer learn it via normal DHCP (which is the default printer setting.) Note that the printer does NOT learn the DNS server addresses via DHCP (who knows why not?) and they must be set manually to enable scan-to-email.

Any computer on the LAN can print/scan/fax once drivers are installed, painlessly. Scanning requires only the included minimal LinkMagic application which allows many detailed settings, pre-scan view, crop, rotation, color adjustment, etc, and is intuitive to use.

I had no trouble setting up scan to SMB Server once I learned that an SMB Server is a shared folder on a Windows computer, and that only a certain number range in the SpeedDial list supports this. This allows selecting, via the printer panel, where to send the scanned image. FTP is also supported.

The brand-name replacement cartridges are expensive but I've found some others which are very reasonable. I've not tried them yet, and be advised that using them supposedly voids the warranty.

This printer is a great value for everyday use once you get it set up. And setup is easy too, once you cut through all the doc and access the machine directly.

Comments about Konica Minolta magicolor 1690MF Network Color All-in-One Laser Printer:

So far so good. Color prints are slow but I knew that was the case and it's only because I'm used to having just a black ink laser. My biggest disappointment is that I can't print double-sided. That's a big deal for the purposes I was using this for. I have to go the old fashion way by printing even pages only, and putting the paper back in strategically myself and then printing odd pages on the other side. I see now that there is an additional option that is about $90 you have to buy separately in order to do that. That seems ridiculous to me since double sided is a pretty basic feature and I didn't even think to double check for that before purchasing. Takes the good deal right out of this printer if you have to pay for the other piece separately. Oh well.

This printer is awesome. Nice quality printer and copier. Purhcased the two sided print attachment to enhance the capability. Works perfectly! Very much worth the cost.

A PERFECT professional office printer. Great color and printing speed. Only complaint is that it does not handle duplex scanning for double-sided documents. But for the [$] I can flip my documents to scan them…
