The Sunpak RD2000 Digital Shoe Mount Flash is a compact and ultra-low profile flash, which fully supports TTL flash operation with digital SLR cameras. This version is dedicated to the Nikon digital SLR camera line, and fully supports Nikon's i-TTL flash operating system.

The flash is powered by only two AA batteries, which keeps it compact and lightweight. At the same time, it provides up to 200 flashes at full power. With a low profile design, this flash barely extends 2" above the camera. The head can tilt up to 90° for bounced illumination. Its light output can be adjusted with a range of +/-1 EV in 0.5 increments (5 settings).

The RD2000 is a handy flash that complements the compact design of digital SLR cameras.

Always double check your batteries when installing them. Industry standard is that the spring goes to the negative side of the battery (flat side) - however, in this flash, one battery goes in correctly and the other goes in backwards with the spring at the postive end of the battery. Either a oversight on Sunpak's design team or trying to save a penny, but just a word of warning when installing batteries in this flash.

I've been using the RD2000 for almost 2 years with my Nikon D90 and the 18-55 VR lens.
I mostly shoot indoor portraits of my kids and use the bounced light technique (either 75 or 90 degrees) with the diffuser.
The skin tones and overall lighting are great if the camera exposure compensation is increased to +0.7 or +1.0. But the results are not always consistent and sometimes require some extra tweaking.
The Sunpak flash is very light and foldable and easily fits in the outside pocket of my camera bag.
RD2000 allows you to increase or decrease the flash output by using the EV adjustment button, with a choice of 5 steps (-1, -0.5, 0, +0.5, +1) but in reality my flash will not do that so I resort to changing the flash EV through camera flash button. Did I receive a bad copy? I am not sure so I usually only use the camera EV compensation and don't bother with flash output adjustment and leave it at 0.
I had a chance to compare it with Nikon SB-400 and here are my impressions:
Nikon recharges instantly – Sunpak needs from 4 to 8 seconds or the results will be underexposed (and I use Sanyo XX Eneloops!) Is this acceptable? I am missing many pictures and this would be very annoying for active shooters.
Nikon is slightly heavier and bigger but has a metal shoe mount and looks sturdier and is much better built. Sunpak's plastic shoe mount looks very primitive in comparison…
From my experience the Nikon flash better understands the Nikon body, i.e. exposure is definitely calculated more consistently.
For example, when using Sunpak flash for indoor head and shoulder portraits, I set my zoom at 55mm, shutter 125 and f5.6, camera exposure compensation +0.7 and get perfect results, then when trying to take group pictures at 20-25mm with the same settings the faces become overexposed and I have to decrease compensation to +0.3 or 0.
This is not the case with SB-400 which delivers perfect skin tones at any lens distance.
For those on budget and those who don't need high recharging speed and have time to adjust EV, the Sunpak can be a perfect solution, but I have decided to upgrade to SB-400 even though the Sunpak is more convenient to carry.

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

I recently received my Nikon Df and wanted a very small flash in keeping with the low profile of the new Nikon. I have been very pleased with this flash unit. It is excellent in small spaces and for fill flash. As long as you don't expect it to perform like an SB-900/800, you will be pleased too. Best of all, it is so small you can take it anywhere.

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

I had a long debate between this Sunpak and Nikon SB400, but I am glad that I bought this product. It is for my p7700, so the size was the primary concern. Its design that allows the contact part to be folded into the body is what ultimately swayed my decision.

It works flawlessly with p7700, is compact enough to carry it around even in a pocket, yet powerful enough for bounce flash in a small room.

With its small GN, I would not recommend this for DSLR or for any serious photography, though, It is strictly for casual use, and is a perfect companion for a compact camera on a business trip.

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

I already had six speedlights including SB-900. So, I did not purhase it because I needed a speedlight to illuminate a subject. I went through many brands and models. Whay did I buy this little gadget then:

1- It is small. It fits in small spaces and easy to hide it in things e.g., a desk lamp in order to give it as if it's on. That way a) you have a consistent colour temperature that cohers with your other lights when shooting, b) you have relatively enough power output to make something look as if it is really on.

2- It has an EV adjustment: -1 / +1. You can adjust it's power output.

3- This was not the main reason; but it works as a commander, too, if you want to use CLS and trigger other speedlight (if you have a camera that does not have a built-in flash e.g., D3 or D4).

4- It has a TTL feature (again, not my main concern).

      Cons:

1- I wish it had a better power output adjustment more than just one f-stop; at least two or three f-stops.

2- The actual flash window is smaller than it looks. It does not cover the entire front panel. It is almost as small as the built-in camera flash. But not too bad though. I wouldn't use it as a main light sourse ever since it would give a harsh light. Not to the sides, however, you can still bounce the light from a ceiling because it has a rotation—only upwards though.

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

Excellent companion for the Nikon Coolpix P7100. Great improvement in flash photography being able to bounce the flash. Small size makes it convenient on the compact camera and easy to store. Works reliable and well. Recycle time is not too bad; faster with freshly charged NiMH batteries; handy to have an extra set of batteries when recycle slows down (indication for battery change). Using high capacity NiMH provides lots of shots. Also, using an external flash allows the in-camera battery to last longer. B&H included a set of 4 Sunpak NiMH AA batteries and a Sunpak 2 hr charger as a bonus; excellent deal from an excellent company. I have not used the Nikon SB-400 which would be its Nikon equivalent, so I cannot comment on how they compare. I can report, however, that this RD2000 gives consistently good exposures when used with the Coolpix P7100. If you own an advanced compact from Nikon this flash is a welcome addition at a reasonable price. Again, a plug for B&H on fast service and including the bonus batteries and charger.

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

I had the SB-400 for over a year on my D-90 and was very happy with it, then suddenly, after a very small drop, it malfunctioned, and then heard a loud pop, and that was the end of it. It was already out of warranty , so I decided to give the RD2000 a try, it has the same power as the SB-400, compact, and can bounce of the ceiling for close up portraits. The bounced pictures look the same as from the SB-400, and I like the ability to adjust the power on the flash. Even my Omni diffuser from the SB-400 works on the RD2000 (not a snap on fit, but stays on and does the job). It charges up with in 3-4 seconds on new batteries, so I am happy with it so far. Can't comment on its reliability yet, but at 1/2 the price of the SB-400 I am more tolerant. I still prefer the ease of mounting of the SB-400 though. Got a bonus charger with 4 batteries for even a sweeter deal.

Very compact with a swivel shoe mount that allows the flash to be virtually flat, and adds a bounce. The wide angle diffuser can also be used like a small bounce card. About double the power of the built in flash. Accurate metering and decent flash color. Overall a nice unit for the P7100. It's not a flash I would reccomend for the D-SLR camera's as I think it is under powered for that use. Using only 2 AA batteries makes it small and easy to pocket carry, but it is slow to recycle.

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

I haven't had a chance to compare this flash with SB-400 but the results so far are great! Ceiling bouncing makes the portraits look professional and the small size of this flash allows me to keep it in the same small SLR bag with my Nikon D90. It takes the flash a lot longer than 5 sec to recharge ( I am using alkaline Energiser baterries). I will try NiMH and hope they will speed up the recharging

Rating reflects utility. While I have other flash, this proves ideal to use with my D40 (or similar) when I loan to family / friends. The price quite attractive as well. (By my scale a 3-pizza value)

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

I'm a novice indoor photographer, and this is my first use of an accessory flash. A grandson's birthday provided an excellent opportunity to learn and experiment. The flash was simple to use; plug it in and start shooting. The best exposures came with the flash upright for ceiling bounce. Excellent skin tones, no shadows, no reflections -- except for candles off a puzzle box -- a nice touch. Direct flash had a tad of washout at about 12 feet. I will soon construct my own diffuser and experiment with that. I'm very pleased. Simply impossible to do as well with a popup flash.

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

I was looking to buy a Nikon SB400 but no one, including Nikon, had them in stock. I saw this flash in a B&H ad and decided to try it. I was pleasantly surprised. It is small and lightweight and has a tilting head which makes it perfect for use with my Demb Saucer Flip-It.
The lighting provided is much more than the D70s flip up provides. The flash works perfectly with Nikon's TTL system. And at half the price of the SB400, it is quite a buy.

Comments about Sunpak RD2000 Digital TTL Low-Profile Shoe Mount Flash:

This very compact and simple to use flash works nicely on my Nikon D300, exposures accurate, recycle time reasonable. The light quality from the small reflector, which lies close to the lens axis, can be readily improved by using a rubber band to attach a white card reflector made from a 5 x 8 inch note card. Alternately in some rooms, a Sto Fen diffuser can be employed. Used instead for regular bounce flash, the unit has enough power to allow use of ISO 250 or so in a moderately large family room. Anyway, the RD2000 fits nicely into my Lowepro Photo Runner II case, that otherwise holds a DSLR with one wide zoom and one telephoto zoom, wherease my Nikon SB-800, otherwise a fine flash, won't fit. Note that the hot shoe design is specific to Nikon; I actually bought the same flash with the Canon shoe to use with my G10, easily feasible because one of these units costs less than half of the corresponding Nikon or Canon units. The RD2000N won't be enough for certain tasks, but for short range fill-flash, and for bounce flash in small to medium rooms, it will nicely suffice.
