I have been copying segments of tapes made by my Sony handycams (one analog and one digital on tape)and the results provide very good quality images. So far, I have made 15 discs and the machine has worked flawlessly. I had a frustrating experience with a competitors model two years ago, so I was hesitant to buy any DVD recorder after that experience and reading all the troubles people are reporting eith other brands. But, based on the reviews posted here, I decided to take a chance on this mfr and model.
First, the unit allows pausing during the recording so I can go forwards and backwards on the handycam to do scene sequencing. My earlier adventure required shutting the DVD recorder off in order to do that, with the resultant video and audio flutter and broken images on re-start of the recording. This one does it seamlessly!!!
I also copy TV programs from my DVR's hard disk drive onto DVDs so that I have a permanent copy. I do this manually. I set up the DVD recorder, select the DVR show, hit Record and Play, and the copying starts. I leave the room while it copies and use a kitchen timer to know when to go back and turn off the DVD unit.
I will say that the unit has alot of features I will never use (like timer recording) and the instruction manual naturally has to cover everything, so it is an imposing document. BUT..it has to be one of the most understandable and logical manuals ever produced. They really put an effort into step by step procedures for each operation. Applicable steps are shown next to a picture of the remote on which the applicable keys are darkened. Very nice idea for us normal humans. As others have mentioned, read through the manual to get a feel for its organization, note the glossary and index, and then begin to enter language, date, and other preferences per the sequence in the manual. I was impressed that Toshiba listed EXACTLY what discs to get. They have several manufacturer's and speed listed, which I followed. I was not sure about the differences between R factors. Mystery about plus, minus, and RW is clarified on a nice table for the user. I used the big online store to order the specific brand discs. So far, I think this is an excellent choice in DVD recorders for my purpose.
I did make my own set of steps/choices for formatting and recording and finalizing. That way I do not have to have the manual at hand.

I set up my brand new unit, straight out of the box, and was totally unable to get the DVD tray to open. Hours spent on the web trying to find a fix, and discovered that others have had the same problem.
The unit comes with a sheet listing three telephone numbers to call for tech support and customer service-- none of them connects with a human being. Oh, and Toshiba's solution? I have to pay to ship the unit back to them. Outrageous. Last time I purchase a product from them.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
Over the years I have gone through many DVD recorders and it seems that the Toshiba 's last the longest. They are fairly simple to use and when you have more than one it gets a little tricky to keep them straight but some tinfoil shielding works best to keep them from reacting at the same time when operating one of them.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
The Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VCR may be old tech but it still delivers excellent picture and sound quality. It was relatively easy to connect and it was a reasonably priced alternative to renting a DVR from the cable company. Sales person at B&H was surprisingly knowledgable about finding a unit to fit my requested old school specs. Good experience all around.

Just what you need to transfer your memories that are in VHS to Digital discs.
Out the box, plug in, read the manual, insert the tape, insert a blank dv disc and press one button and you are transferring your memories. Do you like to record TV shows and share with grandma? You can now do it on VHS or DVD
This is a very nice unit and no need for software.
There is nothing I don't like of this unit.
I recommend it, by the way, my sister wants one too.

Purchased this specifically to finally get my home movies on DVD. Remarkably, it is working flawlessly with tapes that were recorded 28 years ago.
I have made 11 DVDs so far -- being able to duplicate several shorter videos to the same DVD.
Prefer to use highest quality dub speed . Settings easily allow that.
I have tested all of the DVDs in the player and in my laptop.
It works!
Thanks B&H for always having such a broad selection of products!

First, be advised that this machine does NOT have a tuner so you can't record broadcast or cable tv unless you have a cable box or other external tuner. Otherwise it is a great machine. I use it for playing and copying VHS tapes to DVD. DVD plays great and VHS plays great. I have had no problems hooking up and using this machine. The instruction manual helped me with everything. No problems. This machine runs quietly and smoothly and the B&H price can't be beat! If you want to play your old VHS tapes you need to buy this machine before they disappear from the market.

After putting off a big project, I decided it was time to finally transfer our family memories from old VHS tapes to DVDs. We had a DVD recorder, but it was too old and worn out to do the job. This Toshiba recorder has met my every need!! Easy to program, and it will allow us to enjoy our past memories for a long time!!

This Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo was easy to set up, the instructions simple to follow, the quality was as good as the original or better. Not having an internal tuner is a drag -- I didn't understand what that meant until I tried to set it up on the office TV. Now I'm trying to get it to work through the cable TV box but the cable "in" won't accept either type of cable that I have available.
I tried to phone Toshiba for help but got sent back to their website, which I had alread looked at.
I may be returning it for a DVD/VCR recorder with a built in tuner.

I bought this to transfer all my old VHS to DVD. So far so good, I've not had any problems and I've done about 10 videos. Titling the DVD is a little weird but once you figure it out all is good. Simple set up for transferring, not sure about recording from tv- overall, it does what I want it to without any technical problems.

I bought it for its SVHS feature. Unfortunately, the unit doesn't play SVHS, but it allows one touch recording of DVDs from an external SVHS player. One touch record with auto finalization and chapter markers make it outrageously easy to use with excellent results. I highly recommend it.

I bought this recorder to transfer my VHS tape to DVD but unfortunately I didn't get to use it. I got it hooked up ok, it fairly simple but I couldn't get pass the initial set up: step 2. I called the support number that came with the dvd recorder for help but the agent told me they did not have "live technical support" that I would have to go on the internet for help. I did just that but the internet support system didn't address my problem. Since I couldn't get the dvd recorder to work and I had no support I sent the thing back. I'm a simple 68 year of old woman that's not technically inclined. That's why I also purchased the extended warranty but what good is it if I can't get any support.
