Product Highlights
  • Combination Transmitter/Receiver
  • High Speed Sync up to 1/8000th Sec.
  • On-Camera Hot Shoe
  • Triggers Flash or Camera
  • 32 Channels, Multi-Zone
  • Triggers All Pocket Wizards
  • Standard Triggering with Most Cameras
  • USB Upgradeable

The PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave is part of an ultra-versatile radio slave system, and is dedicated specifically to the Canon E-TTL II flash control system. It simply slides directly into the camera's hot shoe, and there are no special settings to make or modes to call up. Use the camera, on-camera flash, or flash commander controls for flash compensation, zone and ratio control. It supports single or multiple dedicated flash units.

The FlexTT5 is the ideal addition to most Canon E-TTL II flash system. Since this system works on digital radio technology, it can support E-TTL operation around corners, out-of-sight, or in bright sunlight.

The FlexTT5 is a "Transceiver", meaning it can be used either as a transmitter when placed into the camera's hot shoe in combination with another FlexTT5 unit on the flash end, or as a receiver with a MiniTT1 transmitter-only unit placed on the camera's hot shoe.

2 Channel Settings + Learn Mode
Out of the box, the FlexTT5 is programmed for PocketWizard channels 1 and 2. Each setting can also be programmed to transmit and receive any of 20 ControlTL channels for TTL photography and/or 32 standard channels for manual flash photography. The FlexTT5 Transceiver also has a three-zone selector switch which integrates with Canon zones and ratios. The Learn Mode enables programming channels in the field with other PocketWizard radios.
HyperSync & High-Speed Sync Technology
Enables X-sync speeds of up to 1/8000 with full-power flash. High-Speed Sync provides auto flash with the camera's shutter speed setting, up to 1/8000th. Unique programming optimizes HSS for better operation and more shots per set of batteries.
Built-In Hot Shoe, Use with Any Flash
Features a hot shoe on the top, so that you can still mount a flash unit directly onto the camera. This allows you to combine your remote flash with the on-camera flash, or use the on-camera flash for additional E-TTL II control only. Hot shoe contacts automatically detect dedicated ETTL or simple hot shoe flash.
Built-in Hot Shoe
Features a hot shoe on the top, so that you can still mount a flash unit directly onto the camera. This allows you to combine your remote flash with the on-camera flash, or use the on-camera flash for additional E-TTL II control only.
Camera/Flash Ports
The FlexTT5 Transceiver has two plug-in ports for use with remote Canon E-TTL II cameras or other non-TTL flash units. Camera remote triggering requires use of a camera-specific ACC-type cable.
Reverse Compatible + Basic Triggering
Operates on the same channels as all other PocketWizards to work with any unit you may already have. Basic Triggering mode enables standard use with virtually any hot-shoe camera.
Remote Camera Triggering/Relay Mode
This mode can be used to trigger a camera remotely and requires use of a camera-specific ACC-type cable. Auto Relay Mode allows you to trigger a remote camera in sync with a remote flash.
Low-Profile Design
The FlexTT5 lies flat to stay out of the way and uses a flip-up antenna for additional range when needed.
Configurable and Upgradeable
The FlexTT5 features a mini-USB port, which makes it upgradeable and "future-proof" for continuous improvements and compatibility upgrades. The included PocketWizard Utility software allows you to select custom settings through the USB connection and to set it to use specific channels used by other Pocked Wizard units.
Important Information
  • Units sold in USA use 344.0 MHz for channels 1-16, and 346.5-354.0 MHz for channels 17-32
  • Units sold in Europe use 433.62 MHz for channels 1-16, and 434.22 for channels 17-32
  • USA and Euro models do not work together and USA models purchased by overseas customers do not include a warranty
  • USA models are not approved outside of the USA and may interfere with devices in Europe
  • While the FlexTT5 works ideally upon many older Canon flashes, the 580EX, 580EX II, and 430EX emit strong RF noise across the PocketWizard's frequency range, and this significantly reduces out-of-box range performance of the FlexTT5 Transceiver. In PocketWizard's research, the interference from the flash varies wildly from sample to sample. They can only guarantee that the flash will work to ~30' (~10m) in all conditions.
  • Note:These Pocket Wizard trigger cords are NOT compatible: #802-502, 802-511, 804-512. See Accessories Tab for compatible trigger cords.

I opened up the boxes, put in the batteries, placed one on my 40D, and the other mounted under a 580II. You need to turn on the tt5 FIRST (I used channel C1), then turn on the connected gear. Extend each antenna out of it's closed mode. I put the flash in my bedroom which is separated by a thick wall, so it fired out the door at the wall in the hall. I went into my living room, still able to see the wall in the hall and fired the 40D on High Speed FPS. The 580 fired EVERY SINGLE TIME. It is truly awesome. I tried hiding it all over the place, as far as I could behind things to purposely obstruct line of sight. It just fires every single time right out of the box. The literature that came with this version had a list of bug fixes noted on it which could have accounted for the other issues mentioned in the other reviews. On my own I made two mistakes. One was that I didn't realize that the order in which you turn on the gear mattered, but it does. "Flex First" (which is how I remember it), then everything else. Two was that I forgot to extend the tt5's antenna on my camera and got intermittent results, but as soon as I extended it it fired every time. I'm not sure who else will use the tt5 as a transmitter, but it is pretty much obvious now to just flip it up. The mini doesn't have an antenna, so it's an extra step. I plan to do a distance test using the tt5 as a transmitter so I will edit this post soon.[...]

I hate to give an item a less than stellar review but so far these need more testing. I'm holding out for the promised firmware updates but I am getting very impatient. Out of the box they worked for 2 minutes. Once I got them out at a shoot I had to embarrassingly play with them for 5 minutes just to get them to fire a few times then they stopped again. I've since worked them out but they definitely do not work right out of the box every time.

The design is brilliant and they look, feel, and connect way better than any other wireless system especially those that promise TTL. If PW gets the firmware updates out these will be the triggers to have!

My experience is that they only work reliably after you configure them with the included software and forget about using channel 1. Channel 2 is the only channel I can get to reliably work on all 3 of my TT5's.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

I bought this FlexTT5 for three reasons.

    1, Its cheaper than a 600EX
2, To replace another FlexTT5 that broke when it fell out of the Tri-mount shoe on my mono-pod.
3, To allow more off camera flash for additional speedlites I own.

As a senior photographer the pocket wizards give me the freedom to creatively light my subjects and their reliability is exceptional and their durability was a pleasant surprise, I've dropped one in a river, had another fall off a light stand from 10 feet onto a sidewalk and they continued to work. Do not try this at home.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

I have two of these now and I have two cannon 430EX second generation flashes and I love being able two control my flashes off camera as if they were on camera! I have the the AC3 zone control now so I can quickly change the flash level from on top off my Mini TT1 transmitter on top of my Canon 5dMarkIII. If you are not getting your flash off camera I would recommend trying this out as soon as possible. They are available for both Nikon and Canon and they will let you use TTL exposure compensation. The first shot test the exposure and the next shot you have perfect exposure with your flash. It will take a little training but I found amazing videos online on the Pocket Wizard so I knew how to use it before I even got my first set in the mail.

A great transceiver slave unit. It mounts to the Rapid Box bracket and all of my other light stands very well. It also mounts to a mono-pod easily. Very easy to set up with the Pocket Wizard Utility. Take you flash off sleep mode and the very first shot is the calibration shot. The rest of your shots are perfect. Very easy to mount your flash to light weight and portable.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

I use the PocketWizard system: an AC3 / Mini on the camera and FlexTT5 together PlusIII. The Flex triggers are used with 580 EXII and 430 EXII Canon speedlites. The PlusIII is used on a 580 EX (not the EX II) which is incompatible with the FlexTT5. I like many aspects of the system. I wish the manual was better written. I changed from King Pixel Pro flash triggers to PocketWizards for versatility and to take advantage of the radio connection with the Sekonic L-478DR light meter. I think this light meter/radio trigger system working together is terrific. I gave 4 stars and not 5 because I didn't like (i) the PocketWizard sensitivity to the order in which one turns on the equipment and (ii) the documentation should be better.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

Did not meet my expectations based on the promotional material provided by PW. For example, they advertise this product as being fully compatible with ETTL, yet you cannot use the camera menus to make the same adjustments that are available when the flash is mounted on-camera. The only adjustment you can make is power compensation in ETTL mode. In my opinion, this severely limits the utility of these units.

Secondly, the radios don't trigger the off-camera flash on the first try after powering the radios on. That is explained on the PW Wiki page, but not in the promotional material.

Thirdly, the radios did not trigger my flashes 100% of the time (not counting the initial triggering as explained above).

Finally, you can't select the trigger channel in the field. It must be performed in the PW utility program.

Overall, the utility of these radios is not sufficiently better than the manual-only Plus X's, and they're more than twice the cost.

Kudos to B&H, though, for listening to my complaints and allowing me to return them.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

I use this pocket wizard along with the Mini TT1 on my 5D3 and speedlite 580EXII. A bit pricey but I trust the radio waves capability more than the infra red technology cause I can't afford to misfire shots during weddings.

Ive read a lot of bad reviews and on how you need the shield cover to work with the flashes, but it ended up that i didnt need the shield. I bought it for my canon t2i and i use canon 580exii flashes. and their is no problem, they work straight out of the box and setup is a snap.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

I tried it with 580EXII and 430EXII. The flash sitting on top of this thing does not fire most of the times. In ETTL mode does not fire at all. Same is true if I try to use it remotely with flash on top and on the lightstand. It is upgradable to work with PW PlusII model and as such works well when I use as a simple trigger on top of the camera with no flash on it. But then it is not worth the $[$].The rotating antenna is annoying and prone to misfire for vertical shots . The plastic hot shoe is sub-standart. The mini-TT1 I tried before this one had same issues.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

I purchased the Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 "system", which included the MiniTT1 transmitter and the AC3 controller, for portrait Photography.
The system has been for all intent and purpose a real treat to work with on my 7D camera and 580exll Flash group, it gives me complete control of the scene from behind the camera.

With this system I no longer have to stop the creative flow to adjust light output as it is all done from behind the camera.
Performance has been rock steady, never a missed flash. This is why I bought the system.
