The D1 Air 1000W/s Monolight is a significant refinement of the ComPact monolight series from the company which having become synonymous with professional strobe lighting, is now celebrating its 40th anniversary.

No stone has been left unturned in the provision of tech and convenience features that seem to derive from professional photographers' wish lists. The sleek matte-black, high-impact polycarbonate finish encases strobe design that goes beyond the highly visible LED readout and is digital from the ground up. The 7 stop power range breaks down to 1/10 stop increments providing flexibility, precision and consistency, made possible by dual mode SMPS capacitor charging.

A new built-in 77 degree reflector (5.12" diameter) maximizes case space and is ideal for umbrella and softbox use. Features that we've come to expect from Profoto over the years: short flash duration, rapid recycling, a bright 300W modeling lamp and heavy-duty cabling are all on-board.

Profoto Air System technology replaces the sync cord, allowing the head to be remotely triggered from as much as 300 meters (1000 feet) away using a Profoto Air Remote or Air Sync transceiver (sold separately). The Air Sync provides wireless triggering (8 channels) via hot shoe or mini plug, while the Air Remote provides wireless triggering as well as full-function head control over 8 channels in 6 distinct groups. Additionally, the D1 Air's syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's optional Air USB with the included Studio software.

Modeling lamp operation is user-selectable: On/Off/Proportional and Free (manual). There is also a selectable flash confirmation (dimming) feature in addition to an audible, fully-recycled tone. The D1 is compatible with the full line of widely-acclaimed Profoto light-shaping tools. Finally, the self-sensing multi-voltage circuitry allows you to take the D1 anywhere in the world.

High-visibility LED readout with 7 stop range in precise 1/10th stop increments
Rapid recycling (0.2 - 2.0 sec @ 120V, 0.2 - 2.0 sec. @ 230V) insures that fleeting gestures and defining moments are caught, not lost
The 300W modeling lamp meets the challenge posed by a high ambient light level on set provides easy pre-visualization of the final shot
Air System technology makes the sync cord obsolete, allowing remote triggering of your D1 from as much as 1,000' (300 m) away. Alternately, the D1 Air's syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's optional Air USB and the included Studio software
Lightweight design with durable polycarbonate shell and built-in 77 degree umbrella reflector
Self-sensing multi-voltage capability allows you to take the renowned Profoto quality of light anywhere in the world
Super-short flash duration (1/700 - 1/1,800 Sec. t0.5) provides crisp, action-stopping images, and is especially valuable for dance, sports and other highly kinetic subjects
Connect the D1 to the optional Profoto Air USB for PC and Mac for full control of your entire studio flash system via wireless communication
Highly consistent shot-to-shot performance within a +/- 0.05 stop range via dual-mode SMPS capacitor technology
Safety features include auto-diagnostic start-up circuitry, DDP (Deep Discharge Protection), pulse-charging capacitor circuitry temperature control and overload protection
Fully compatible with the extensive line of renowned Profoto light shaping tools

Note:D1 Air models require use of a Profoto Air remote or Profoto Air Sync for triggering of the strobe from the camera

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 1000W/s Monolight:

I rented these first. The air remote made my set up so much faster that I decided to purchase a couple of units.

I like the ability to fire strobes via radio or IR (another light) which adds versatility. The other feature I like is that I can use my old pocket wizards equipment. For example, of course you can plug a PW in the strobe and fire it, but what I like is plugging my old PW camera release card into the camera putting the Air remote in the hot shoe and firing both with my old 10 year old 358 Sekonic light meter. 1. I don't need a second Air remote to trigger camera. 2. This allows me to set strobes, hot lights, and speed lights individually and view images on iPad while at the light vs. running back and forth to view images on computer or camera.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 1000W/s Monolight:

I have a total of three of these D1s. The first one BH sent me was great. The second one didn't trigger very reliably, however, BH replaced it extremely quickly and the new one works perfectly. If you are shooting people and want a shallow depth of field, I would recommend the 500 or 250 watt second version. Even with a soft box and two diffusion panels its lowest setting usually still meters at f8. The light is very powerful and consistent. Unfortunately, Profoto went with their propriety triggering radio. Although the Propriety profoto radio works well, it does not work with pocket wizard frequencies. The work around is to put the air remote on top of a pocket wizard flex, or even more cumbersome sync cord the remote to a plus or multi max and have the air remote dangling. Why bother you ask? Because my beloved Sekonic 758DR has a pocketwizard in it, and I emailed pocket wizard and they responded they have no current plans to make an profoto air compatible transmission unit for their meters. Overall fantastic lights which I would highly recommend, despite the extra couple hundred bucks I had to spend getting them to talk to Sekonic. One star off for profoto not using pocketwizard.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 1000W/s Monolight:

I simply LOVE this light. I personally never owned any type of strobe until now, I always used natural light. But now I'm starting to do more studio work so I needed the strobes.

At work we use Profoto equipment, and once I used it I was hooked. After working with the best, its really hard for you to use anything less on your own time.

And boy am I glad I splurged. The recycling time is amazing, and the ease of use is great! The color accuracy is stunning, and I LOVE that I can plug these right into a power outlet.

I'm used to controlling our lighting at work via Phocus software - so I never had to actually use the dials on the lights themselves, but Profoto really takes the guesswork out of it and lets you focus on your subject.

For now I just needed the one strobe as my key light, and i used speedlights as kickers and triggered them wirelessly, and used the Infrared setting on the D1, and it triggered every time! no blacked out shots. So I was able to go completely wire-free without the remote! I did however have to manually make adjustments to the D1, but that's probably better for now since I've never had to actually use the back of the strobes. I need to get used to that before moving onto something like the remote.

Eventually the plan is to add two more D1 strobes - possibly a kit that comes with the remote (yes i didn't purchase the remote yet because i knew my strobes could trigger it, but just in case i purchased a sync cord too).

People have been talking about the air feature and how the don't like that its not compatible with pocket wizard - well i think the IR function might be plenty to supercede that problem, depending on the circumstances. But I don't use pocketwizard so I can't say for sure.

There was only one "issue". When I got my strobe, I had to plug it in and fire away just to make sure it actually worked and didn't get damaged during transport. But I noticed it was overheating and took a LONG time to recycle. I then realized though, that the building I was in had older wiring and wasn't supplying enough power to the light. I took it to the studio and it worked wonderfully. So MAKE sure wherever you are shooting that you have plenty of power - when you aren't using a powerpack that's definitely important. Especially if you are on location in an older building, it needs wiring that's substantial enough to power these lights otherwise you risk the life of your strobe.

Just purchased the d1 recently, and I am in awe with how this light performs. 7 stop range is ridiculous, the fast recycling times enable you to shoot in continuous mode. It produces a nice even color temp. It's totally worth the price, prospective buyers should consider this an investment.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 1000W/s Monolight:

I purchased 6 of these Profoto D1 Monolights for location shooting. As a NYC Advertising Photographer I travel by aircraft 2-3 times per month. Because of travel restrictions and the downturned economic climate I've had to streamline my travel lighting kit. Clients no longer want to pay for multiple assistants and the thousands of dollars in fees when shipping heavy power packs and heads. Yet I still need to arrive at the job with enough equipment that is of high enough wattage to complete the shoot successfully. The Profoto monolights have worked extremely well for my location work. Their light-weight and small size allows me to carry 6 units in a single case that weighs less than 47 lb. The air-remote is very dependable and well made, great for controlling heads on booms and tall stands. I was concerned with the flat light surface of the head when used in softboxes: On testing the heads in my studio I found that on small and medium-sized boxes we see very little corner fall-off. On large and x-large boxes there is a noticeable light fall-off. There is also noticeable light fall-off when using the large 6 foot octa-boxes and strip-lights. Profoto has addressed this issue and now offers an accessory convex Pyrex dome, similar to what is on their standard flash heads that fixes this issue.( If your using umbrellas, grids or medium and small boxes the pyrex dome is not needed). If you are looking for the best 'bang for your buck' in profoto lighting, this is it. Plenty of power, recycling in less than a second, and a fast flash duration that will freeze moving subjects. Also, the flash head and modeling light work on all power voltages throughout the world (No need to carry voltage dependent modeling lights).
