The Profoto D1 Air 500 w/s Monolight is a significant refinement of the ComPact monolight series from the company which having become synonymous with professional strobe lighting, is now celebrating its 40th anniversary.

This D1 Air 500 w/s 2-Light Studio Kit includes 2 D1 Air 500 monolights, 2-D1 Small White Umbrellas, 2-D1 Light Stands, 1-D1 Studio Kit Case and a Profoto Air Remote.

No stone has been left unturned in the provision of tech and convenience features that seem to derive from professional photographers' wish lists. The sleek matte-black, high-impact polycarbonate finish encases strobe design that goes beyond the highly visible LED readout and is digital from the ground up. The 7 stop power range breaks down to 1/10 stop increments providing flexibility, precision and consistency, made possible by dual mode SMPS capacitor charging.

A new built-in 77 degree reflector (5.12" diameter) maximizes case space and is ideal for umbrella and softbox use. Features that we've come to expect from Profoto over the years: short flash duration, rapid recycling, a bright 300W modeling lamp and heavy-duty cabling are all on-board.

New Profoto Air System technology replaces the sync cord, allowing the head to be remotely triggered from as much as 300 meters (1000 feet) away using a Profoto Air Remote (included with kit) or Air Sync transceiver (sold separately). The Air Sync provides wireless triggering (8 channels) via hot shoe or mini plug, while the Air Remote provides wireless triggering as well as full-function head control over 8 channels in 6 distinct groups. Additionally, the D1 Air's syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's Air USB and Studio Air systems.

Modeling lamp operation is user-selectable: On/Off/Proportional and Free (manual). There is also a selectable flash confirmation (dimming) feature in addition to an audible, fully-recycled tone. The D1 is compatible with the full line of widely-acclaimed Profoto light-shaping tools. Finally, the self-sensing multi-voltage circuitry allows you to take the D1 anywhere in the world.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

For the applications I use these lights for, portraits and products in relatively tight spaces, 500 w/s is enough light. I'm able to get f/16 worth of power from 3-4 feet away without going to full power. The build quality on the heads is superb as well as on the bag everything comes in. The Air Remote system is easy to use and a welcomed asset. The umbrellas get the job done their made for, but I rarely use them. The light stands seem a little cheap and are only sturdy enough for small modifiers (use your own). With everything loaded into the bag, it's a little heavy, making wheels sorely missed from the design of the bag.

If the nightstands were a bit more sturdy and the bag had wheels, I would give this product a 5-star rating.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

I am a beginner when it comes to studio photography, so I couldn't understand why 2 lights, 2 stands, 2 umbrellas and a remote could possibly be worth $ bucks. Now I understand. This kits is awesome and the whole thing is very intuitive, which is a good thing since the owners manual is not very good. There seems to be a consensus here that the stands are very flimsy. I would agree with that if I was taking this kit out a lot and doing location shots or moving it around a lot. Then I'd get C stands. But for me, in my little studio, shooting product shots, it's fine. It's important that you set up the stand bases so they have a good amount of spread. If you don't they could easily topple over. Also the case is ridiculously tight for putting everything back after you are done shooting. Anyone who has ever tried to put Christmas lights back in the box the way they came from the factory can appreciate what I mean.

I finally bit the bullet and sold my Paul C Buff Einstein's and got these. The PCB did a good job but the light and build quality don't compare to these D1's. They are built solid and everything about them is great. The stands that come with the kit are a waste, They are flimsy and and a waste considering you are spending good money on expensive lights. Thats my only complaint with the kit. Everything else is nice. Ohh buy the profoto glass dome frosted to go with each light

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

I'm not usually swayed by name or more expensive brands. But I will say the first few sessions I done w/my Profotos have amazing skin tones straight out of camera, not doing anything else different from my normal set up. My dance studio said I have really raised the bar with this last session...again, only difference is switching main to Profotos.

Easy set up, easy to adjust w/Air Remote and beautiful light...what more can you ask for! Now, I'm upgrading from a popular intro level strobe, which did not fire consistently w/the same power, so I'd have to tweak images to match all exposure, so I can't say it wouldn't be similar comments with another upgraded strobe. Using with 64" soft silver parabolic umbrellas with white diffusion fabric. Love, love, love!

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

I bought this kit because I had a job where I needed to have multiple lighting set ups in an office space where I would need to balance the strobes with the ambient light. The 500 air kit was perfect for this. The Air transmitter is a little confusing at first but is awesome once you are familiar with it. The recycle is super fast which was also important to me. If I were be critical I would say the lights get pretty hot with the modling light on and they stay really hot for quite sometime after turning them off. Also the lightstands look solid for the most part but the knob that opens and closes the legs looks really flimsy and is made out of plastic.

The lights and air remote are incredible! The lights do not work with Light meters unless you buy remotes for each light. Regardless, I rarely need a light meter and it doesn't bother me. The light stands are OK and work, but don't hold much weight. The bag will accommodate better aftermarket stands. The umbrellas reflect good light but are very small. The value of just the two lights and remote are worth it. I will buy another kit shortly; probably the 500/1000 kit w/o the remote. Don't waist your money on cheap lights. These lights are worth the price.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

This is a great little kit with a lot of value for the money. The included umbrellas do put out a nice, consistent light as you would expect, but what I like more about this particular kit is that I can throw in a few Chimeras, speedrings and other accessories without overloading the included case. It is a soft-shelled case, but the lights themselves are protected by included foam inserts making this kit durable and travel-ready.

As other have mentioned, the kit stands are not excellent, but perfectly usable in a pinch. I was able to replace them with light-weight Arri 'kit' stands, giving me a little bit more stability without packing an extra case.

Overall, compared to the old Profoto 600R monolight I previously used for quick travel gigs, this is a major upgrade for me without breaking the bank.

I did add soft boxes and the Profoto BatPac. The wireless system is amazing. You can control everything from your camera. I did not even need to read the manual.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

I mainly shoot fashion on location and in studio... have only used my D1 Air 500 in studio so far and love it! Can't wait to try it outside on location! Setting the lights up was simple and the air remote is a must have. In the future will be adding light accessories, one problem, Profoto is a bit pricey, so may have to shop around for compatible gear.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

This set is my first entry into the ProFoto world and I love it. The design of the lights is fantastic and solid. The ease of adding modifiers and changing settings is great. The Air remote is so easy to figure out and use. The only issue I have, and I read lots of photographers have the same issue, is that to get a true, clean shadow with reflectors you have to switch out the glass front for a domed diffuser - which means another purchase. Also, when the domed diffuser is installed, the light doesn't fit in the case. A minor problem. The recycle time is very fast and the kit fits in a small case and is easy to travel with.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

I'm still trying to figure out these lights but what I've figured out so far is great. I bought these to replace the Canon speedlights/PocketWizard combo I was using indoors. I know the comparison is not fair but it will give you the baseline.
I bought these because of the reviews and recommendation from a colleague. Do I know if the light temp is consistent? No, I don't. Can I tell that they provide better light than the Canon or Medalight I've been using for ages? No, I can't. Are they better quality, provide versatility, and look great? Emphatically, YES! Do I plan on using them for years to come? Yes.
The case that comes with this kit is made specifically for these lights. The lights fit in the molded foam perfectly. The lightstands and umbrellas are secured separately in a rigid base with velcro straps. The light power cords have a separate compartment for storage. There is not much room for any additional gear.
The light stands are weak. They are not smooth in their operation. I wrestle with them to set them up and break them down. The other comments on them are wholly true. Buy others if you want quality lightstands.

Other Profoto products I bought with this:
I bought a speedring and Profoto lightbox to replace one of the umbrellas. I wasn't pleased with the lightbox quality. The built in clip that holds the interior diffuser screen in place separated within minutes of taking it out of the box.
I also bought the cord to connect my light meter to the Air Commander which comes with input and output connections.

I've included some pictures I took using this kit.

Love them so far. Using the Air Remote is a breeze and makes things simple. I've used them with the Westcott 7' umbrella and the light is just fantastic. I have several other off brand monolights and was able to to use them with the Profotos. I simply plugged my Pocketwizard Pluss III controller into the Input terminal of the Air Remote and it works like a champ. Of course I can't adjust the off brand lights but still maintain control of the Profotos. I've also used the Profotos with the PBL Vagabond mini with no problem. Recycle is a bit slower but not so much I can't live with it. I will be purchasing another set of these in the future. Yes, they are expensive but the quality is impeccable. Not worried in the least at taking these to outdoor shoots. As others have mentioned the stands and they do leave a bit to be desired.

I use the lights for portrait work and they are compact, light and easy to learn. The air system has worked flawlessly and is better than PW because you can adjust the power of the lights from your camera. I have heard people complain that you cannot use the air system with Sekonic meters. This is not true. Attach the air transceiver to the meter with a short sync cable and set the meter to sync cable mode and away you go. Very happy with this purchase so far.

Awesome lighting system! I am aphotography student at Academy of Art University taking a lighting class. The quality build is great. Origionally I purchased an "more affordable" system, not happy at all. Using the D1 air monolights is a pleasure, solidly built, consistant light temperature, rapid recycle time and seven full stop range in 1/10 increments, just what I needed. The only improvement I can think of is to create a three light kit with either a 22 inch beauty dish or a medium soft box included. I've already ordered a third D1 air and soon to purchase the beauty dish.Profoto is a bit pricey, but you absolutely get what you pay for.
