The Profoto D1 500 w/s Monolight is a significant refinement of the ComPact monolight series from the company which having become synonymous with professional strobe lighting, is now celebrating its 40th anniversary.

This D1 500 w/s 2-Light Studio Kit includes 2 D1 500 monolights, 2-D1 small white umbrellas, 2-D1 light stands and a D1 Studio Kit Case.

No stone has been left unturned in the provision of tech and convenience features that seem to derive from professional photographers' wish lists. The sleek matte-black, high-impact polycarbonate finish encases strobe design that goes beyond the highly visible LED readout and is digital from the ground up. The 7 stop power range breaks down to 1/10 stop increments providing flexibility, precision and consistency, made possible by dual mode SMPS capacitor charging.

A new built-in 77 degree reflector (5.12" diameter) maximizes case space and is ideal for umbrella and softbox use. Features that we've come to expect from Profoto over the years: short flash duration, rapid recycling, a bright 300W modeling lamp and heavy-duty cabling are all on-board.

New Profoto Air System technology (purchased separately) replaces the sync cord, allowing the head to be remotely triggered from as much as 300 meters (1000 feet) away using a Profoto Air Remote or Air Sync transceiver (sold separately). The Air Sync provides wireless triggering (8 channels) via hot shoe or mini plug, while the Air Remote provides wireless triggering as well as full-function head control over 8 channels in 6 distinct groups. Additionally, the D1 syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's Air USB and Studio Air systems.

Modeling lamp operation is user-selectable: On/Off/Proportional and Free (manual). There is also a selectable flash confirmation (dimming) feature in addition to an audible, fully-recycled tone. The D1 is compatible with the full line of widely-acclaimed Profoto light-shaping tools. Finally, the self-sensing multi-voltage circuitry allows you to take the D1 anywhere in the world.

Note: D1 standard heads require use of a Profoto Air Remote or Air Sync tranceiver (or combination) on both camera and head for remote triggering.

Comments about Profoto D1 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

My wife and I are both professional photographers in Alaska. We do only location work and wanted more power than what our speed lights were giving us. But we also didn't want to have to carry around a power pack, thats why we purchased the D1 moonlight kit. It's great, you just walk into the location and plug directly into a wall and your good to go. We liked the kit so much we bought a second one. The D1 is very easy to use, we weren't interested in the Profoto air remote, because we already had a good investment in the pocket wizard plus lll's. The pocket wizards plug right in and they are ready to go. I would however recommend connecting all the D1's via pocket wizard, the built in IR slave on the D1 is not that reliable. All the profoto light shaping tools work with the D1. So thats nice. The stands, umbrella, sync cord are all of very nice quality. I especially like the case that the kit comes in, it is very sturdy and we have already flown with it, and everything made it safely to and from location. Simply put, this kit is worth it.

Comments about Profoto D1 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

Very satisfied with the lights even though I did not get the D1Air. (I thought about it hard even after receipt.) I am using PocketWizard Plus III's and satisfied with the result. The lights are well built, the case is sturdy and the stands would have been better if sturdier. I have ordered a pair of C-Stands to replace the stands provided.
They should give these lights away like razors to razor-blades. I have added a Soft-Box, Speed-Ring, Beauty Dish, and Honeycomb Grids (5, 10 & 20 degrees) since purchase. Quality line of products....

Comments about Profoto D1 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

Fantastic lights, and for a killer deal too! Only complaint is that you can't use a zoom reflector with an umbrella like the compact series, but the built in reflector does the job well.

Comments about Profoto D1 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:

I am so happy with the consistent output and fast recycling time of the Profoto D1 lights. I have this kit, which does not have the Profoto proprietary Air triggering system.

While Air is great (the air remote allows you to adjust output of the lights from the remote) I am just as happy using Pocket Wizard triggers. The disclaimer on this product listing — D1 standard heads require use of a Profoto Air Remote or Air Sync tranceiver (or combination) on both camera and head for remote triggering — seems to read that only Air triggering would work with these heads. What is more accurate is that the heads do not have the Air system built in to these heads.
