Product Highlights
  • For Cameras With APS-C Size Sensors

To fulfill the needs of digital photographers owning Nikon cameras with DX-sized sensors, Nikon produces the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX Lens.

This lens produces an angle of view similar to what a 50mm lens would produce on a full-frame/FX camera and thusly functions as a "normal" lens. Prior to the digital explosion, most shooters would begin their exploration into the world of photography with a "normal" lens with a large maximum aperture.

A lens of this type is the traditional standby for low-light shooting, careful composition, and street shooting. This 35mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens recreates that experience for DX format shooters who have been seeking a comparable "normal" lens.

Note! DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with FX "full-frame" digital or 35mm SLR cameras.

Fast "Normal" Lens
The 35mm focal length closely matches a 50mm lens in the FX format. This is perceived to be a natural lens as it provides an undistorted angle of view that is similar to what the unaided human eye perceives.
Versatile
A desirable lens for low-light, travel, environmental portraiture and overall general photography.
Contains an Aspherical Lens Element
The incorporation of an aspherical element minimizes coma and other lens aberrations, further improving image integrity.
Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
This lens coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency with reduced flare.
Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
The motor embedded in the body of the lens enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocusing.
7-blade Diaphragm
A rounded iris produces a more natural rendering of out-of-focus image elements.
Close Focusing
The 35mm f/1.8 AF-S can focus as close as one foot.

I own a Nikon D3100 that I have become fairly accustumed with through use, a semester-long photography class, and just practice. My first purchase outside of the kit 18-55 lens was a 55-200, because I wanted more zoom capability. After having these two, on photo forums there were guys from the beginning stressing to get a prime lens to really teach you even more about photography, composition, etc.

I did a side by side comparison under the same light and was blown away with the results. Having the fast 1.8 aperture is truly the difference between a nice shot, and one that really stands out. I can't say enough good things about this lens, actually, it's making me dread putting on my others because the performance isn't nearly the same. Under low light conditions there is no way I'll ever shoot with my 18-55 again. Outside where its bright the aperture isn't as much of a deal breaker, but inside you can't compare unless you blow it out with flash.

I've been using this lens as my normal lens on a d90 now, taking the place of my 50mm f/1.8 Series E. There are two things about the 35mm that it does better for me. First, I like the field of view for 35mm a lot more than 50mm on a dx camera. Second, this lens is sharper than my 50mm f/1.8E. Unfortunately it seems to do about everything else than my 50mm, despite being a 20 year newer design. I'll hit on some strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths:
Size - not too much to say here..it's big enough for a great reasonable grip, the MF ring is easy to find. Nothing to complain about here.

Sharpness - it's usually pretty good in this respect, so good in fact I think that causes problems when it comes to the transition between in focus and out of focus, and the bokeh quality, but more on that later. This lens is a 3.5 out of 5 on sharpness in my book - pretty good with lenses like the 75-150 Series E getting a 4.5 and the 180/2.8 AIS (legendary) getting a 5. Do avoid being wide open when going for sharpness (as with about every other lens on the planet) but it doesn't take much stopping down for it to get its act together. At f/2.5 its output is pretty good.

Volume - it's AF motor is quiet. I can't think of any scenario in which it may be a problem.

Flare resistance - I haven't felt the need to use the supplied hood.

Weaknesses:
Image Quality - the lens is sharp, but the transition between the in focus areas and the out of focus areas is a clearly visible line. I'll avoid shallow depth of field photos with this lens. It's just disappointing.

- in addition the quality of the out of focus areas (bokeh) hasn't been so spectacular in my book. It's just not that smooth. The moderately fast aperture allows you to throw the background out of focus fairly easily, but with the quality of the oof areas leaves that fast aperture is for light gathering, not depth of field control, in my book.

Controls - I'm used to vintage lenses with a proper aperture control, using this G lens is simply put silly. The two control dials on my d90 that I must use with this lens to set exposure is such a clunky design. I can't believe it's the best Canon, Nikon, Pentax, all the dSLR makers have come up with. A proper aperture control ring puts both hands into play engaging more of the body. With an AF-S G lens my left hand has nothing to do, and it leaves me feeling more disconnected from the picture taking.

Bundled pouch - the pouch bundled for this lens is a joke.

Bottom line --
If you're looking for a lens to mount to take photos of friends that can handle the dark this is a great, inexpensive option. If you're looking for anything that involves throwing the background out of focus I'd look elsewhere.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens:

I've had this lens for a few weeks now and it has completely replaced the stock lens on my Nikon D3100.

I've so far photographed architecturural details, smallish (not macro) found still-life, and scenery (including fireworks) with excellent results. From here on out, when I walk out the door with my camera slung over my shoulder, this is the lens that will be ready to go. This being said, if I specifically go out for macro or scenery I would use different lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens:

I have searched for a lightweight, compact lens for street photography on my D3200. And the 35mm f/1.8G is the only one of its kind. No other lens is as light weight and compact for DSLR street photography. Higher quality 35mm cost 2 to 5 times more, and are 2 to 3 times more heavy and large. IMO this 35mm lens design makes it the best 35mm street photography lens on the market today. I have yet to find a replacement for this lens.

It does have limitations. a lot of chromatic aberration, and limited angle of view. Knowing how to work around these limitations, you can get great performance out of this lens.

So if you are into DSLR street photography, this great Nikon lens is hard to beat. Kudos to Nikon for developing the 35mm f/1.8G for DX.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens:

I got this lens be the companion of the other prime lens, a 50mm 1.8. I found that I was struggling with getting far enough back for some larger group shots with the 50mm since I am working with a DX format camera and the crop factor brought me impossibly close at times.

Overall, I am impressed with the quality of the lens. It functions smoothly and quietly in auto focus. There seems to be a small amount of blue cast to the pictures, but that has been easily removed in post process.

Overall, if I compared it to the image quality of the 50mm, I still prefer the 50mm. It gives me better bokah and seems to fit my needs better. However, I am glad to have the 35 mm in my gear bag for those moments when I need it. For the price of it, you can't go wrong.

I got this in the used dept for a good price, and I am so delighted with this lens. As what everybody said, "A must have lens". I have D5100 with a 18-55mm kit and I thought I have to upgrade it to this lens since photography is becoming more my hobby now.

With the aid of expedited shipping I was shooting photographs within two days. The lens is small, light and produces extremely sharp pictures. I recommend this lens and if I had only one to have permanently on my camera, this will be the one.

after owning my d3200 for a few months I really wanted a nice quick lens that was good in low light settings. For 200 bucks this is a amazing piece of glass, it is now my "go to" lens that only leaves my body when I need my 55-200mm. I'm really enjoying learning the ins and outs of photography with this lens! Most of my photos are while I'm hiing and this is serving me well.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens:

After extensive research and consideration into my photography needs, I found that this lens satisfies and impresses me for all of those considerations. I am a brand new amateur in the DSLR scene and own the Nikon 3200 body with a 18 - 35 mm VR kit lens. I wanted to add something that would really make an impression in my photography. I needed something excellent for all around photography on a tight budget. In particular I needed to cover picnics, indoor parties and events, some nature shots, and product photography for my online clothing retail business. Arguably, the 50 mm f/1.4 DX provided sharper images and better bokeh effects. However, after having used the 35 mm lens for all of my intended purposes, I realized that the 50 mm would have been given too long of a reach for my work spaces and made product photography impossible from the angles I needed. In the future, when my budget and skill set accommodate it, I plan to add a long zoom with up to 300 mm length. For now, the 35 mm lens covers all my needs and impresses my intended audience. And for $200, this is a must-have lens. I almost exclusively shoot with this now while kit lens stays in my bag. For other amateurs learning about their tools like me, I was also concerned about not having VR as a feature on this lens. However, the speed with which this lens captures images made having VR redundant.

I use this lens for regular pictures that do not require a telephoto. The lens is sharp - - - lighter and smaller than the 18-55 zoom. And sharper than the zoon.

i love the frame provided by that lens , subject are intense inside the image, but sometimes the automatic focus is not the best for some subject when here is distances and depth in the "profondeur de champs"

I use my tamron 18-270 as my main lens and got this one to get the bokeh effect in some pictures. It works well for landscapes but I also want something wider in my bag as well.
