The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens is designed for use with DX-format cameras and will provide a "normal" 52.5mm equivalent focal length. With an f/1.8 maximum aperture it is useful in low-light conditions and it has one aspherical element to help control distortion and aberrations. Also, it utilizes Nikon's Super Integrated Coating to further minimize flare and ghosting in your images.

Packing in a Silent Wave Motor AF system with a rear focusing design, the NIKKOR 35mm is able to lock focus quickly and quietly. Also, it has manual focus override for taking control whenever it is desired, and it can focus as close as 11.8" to your subjects. Additionally, it has a 52mm filter diameter and features a 7-blade diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus elements.

The 35mm focal length closely matches a 50mm lens in the FX format. This is perceived to be a natural lens as it provides an undistorted angle of view that is similar to what the unaided human eye perceives.
The incorporation of an aspherical element minimizes coma and other lens aberrations, further improving image integrity.
The Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency with reduced flare.
The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) embedded in the body of the lens enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocusing.
A rounded 7-blade diaphragm produces a more natural rendering of out-of-focus image elements.

I own a Nikon D3100 that I have become fairly accustumed with through use, a semester-long photography class, and just practice. My first purchase outside of the kit 18-55 lens was a 55-200, because I wanted more zoom capability. After having these two, on photo forums there were guys from the beginning stressing to get a prime lens to really teach you even more about photography, composition, etc.

I did a side by side comparison under the same light and was blown away with the results. Having the fast 1.8 aperture is truly the difference between a nice shot, and one that really stands out. I can't say enough good things about this lens, actually, it's making me dread putting on my others because the performance isn't nearly the same. Under low light conditions there is no way I'll ever shoot with my 18-55 again. Outside where its bright the aperture isn't as much of a deal breaker, but inside you can't compare unless you blow it out with flash.

I've been using this lens as my normal lens on a d90 now, taking the place of my 50mm f/1.8 Series E. There are two things about the 35mm that it does better for me. First, I like the field of view for 35mm a lot more than 50mm on a dx camera. Second, this lens is sharper than my 50mm f/1.8E. Unfortunately it seems to do about everything else than my 50mm, despite being a 20 year newer design. I'll hit on some strengths and weaknesses:

    Strengths:
Size - not too much to say here..it's big enough for a great reasonable grip, the MF ring is easy to find. Nothing to complain about here.

Sharpness - it's usually pretty good in this respect, so good in fact I think that causes problems when it comes to the transition between in focus and out of focus, and the bokeh quality, but more on that later. This lens is a 3.5 out of 5 on sharpness in my book - pretty good with lenses like the 75-150 Series E getting a 4.5 and the 180/2.8 AIS (legendary) getting a 5. Do avoid being wide open when going for sharpness (as with about every other lens on the planet) but it doesn't take much stopping down for it to get its act together. At f/2.5 its output is pretty good.

Volume - it's AF motor is quiet. I can't think of any scenario in which it may be a problem.

Flare resistance - I haven't felt the need to use the supplied hood.

    Weaknesses:
Image Quality - the lens is sharp, but the transition between the in focus areas and the out of focus areas is a clearly visible line. I'll avoid shallow depth of field photos with this lens. It's just disappointing.

    - in addition the quality of the out of focus areas (bokeh) hasn't been so spectacular in my book. It's just not that smooth. The moderately fast aperture allows you to throw the background out of focus fairly easily, but with the quality of the oof areas leaves that fast aperture is for light gathering, not depth of field control, in my book.

Controls - I'm used to vintage lenses with a proper aperture control, using this G lens is simply put silly. The two control dials on my d90 that I must use with this lens to set exposure is such a clunky design. I can't believe it's the best Canon, Nikon, Pentax, all the dSLR makers have come up with. A proper aperture control ring puts both hands into play engaging more of the body. With an AF-S G lens my left hand has nothing to do, and it leaves me feeling more disconnected from the picture taking.

Bundled pouch - the pouch bundled for this lens is a joke.

    Bottom line --
If you're looking for a lens to mount to take photos of friends that can handle the dark this is a great, inexpensive option. If you're looking for anything that involves throwing the background out of focus I'd look elsewhere.

Travel has become my passion with my photography. I have been using a 18-200 Nikon Zoom lens as my walk around lens all around the world. While I have often brought other lenses along, they never seem to be used, at all. But, I needed a lens considerably sharper and faster for some situations. This is just that. Fast and sharp, fits into my jacket pocket, I needed this lens!

I love this lens for my Nikon D7100. Great for portraits (I've taken some great shots of my wife, daughter, and granddaughter) and family gatherings. Also great for town and city photos. It's my standard go-to lens for most situations and produces reliably sharp images with nice bokeh at the widest aperture (f/1.8). It complements the only other lens I use for my camera (a Nikkor 55-300 mm, f/4.5-5.6), mostly for the great outdoors (i.e., nature shots, national parks, etc.).

I am a "prime" kinda guy...for the small size benefit more than anything else. Wish Nikon made a 35mm *equivalent" 1.8 prime like this. The new 24mm 1.4 is too big, heavy and expensive for me.

This lens is very nice. I have a 50mm 1.8D that is very good as well, but this 35 is more convenient on a DX body when shooting at close quarters indoors.

While my zoom lens gives me the same settings I find the fixed 35mm lens keeps me honest. Using this lens produces sharp images and requires me to arrange the shot rather than zooming from a distance. I feel this lens makes me feel more connect to the subject. I love it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

This lens is a great tool for DX cameras. The FOV and bokeh characteristics are nice for portraits and general travel photography. I tend to just take this vs the 18-55mm kit lens. The build quality is pretty good, but mine is starting to feel a little worn after a lot of time at the beach and in dusty enviornments. The autofocus could be faster, but the manual adjust feels nice. Lack of a distance or FOV scale is sad, as is the lack of a hard infinity stop for night shots. I now own the 35mm f/2 AF-D and find it fixes most of these issues at the cost of losing instant manual focus. No biggie for me, I prefer to switch to full manual focus anyhow.

Would highly recommend for cheaper Nikon cameras that lack a focus motor. I would recommend it over the 35mm AF-D if price is an issue, otherwise the AF-D is my new prefered 35mm lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

I purchased the lens as a basuc lens to be used indoors.

Seems ok, a little unsure of its auto focus performance.

I will have to study this a little more.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

when I bought my first camera back in the 80's, I went with Nikon. Then down the road I switched to Canon. At the time it seemed like a good idea. But I always wanted to come back to Nikon. When the time came, this lens was in my wishlist before a camera was.I used to love using a 50mm lens, and with the crop factor, that is what this is. It is not the best built lens. But it does not have the price tag those lenses have. And for me it is built good enough not to worry about it. I know it will last me for years. I take care of my gear. This lens is sharp. I have not gotten any picture I was not happy with that was not my fault. I have gotten some large enlargements of pictures taken with this lens and they turned out great. I am very pleased. If you abuse your gear, look elsewhere. The 5 star rating is taking into consideration of the price and what you get for that money. The images are consistently sharp. If this was lost or stolen it would be replaced immediately. Great for low natural lighting portraits. I would highly recommend it. I can't imagine not having this lens in my bag.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

I bought this lens to use indoors and in low light situations. I debated whether to get the 35mm or the 50mm, but on a DX camera (D7100), I'm glad I bought the 35mm because I don't have to stand so far away to take the shot. I used this lens last weekend when we went to Chicago and it allowed me to get some decent pictures inside the Art Institute and Shedd Aquarium, which don't allow flash. Outdoors, the pictures are sharp. Of course, the 1.8 also provides great bokeh.

So far, so good. Nice crisp images and pretty faithful reproduction of colors and images.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

I wasn't sure whether to go with the Nikkor 35mm or 50mm f/1.8 for my D7100 (also purchased through B&H)... I like the option of the 35mm for panoramic shooting and the versatility of the 50. After pricing the lenses I was able to get both from B&H for a great price. In each case, my order was submitted on a Sunday and arrived mid-day Tuesday. You can't beat the knowledgeable sales reps, fair prices, quality products and reliable service.
