To fulfill the needs of digital photographers owning Nikon cameras with DX-sized sensors, Nikon produces the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX Lens.
This lens produces an angle of view similar to what a 50mm lens would produce on a full-frame/FX camera and thusly functions as a "normal" lens. Prior to the digital explosion, most shooters would begin their exploration into the world of photography with a "normal" lens with a large maximum aperture.
A lens of this type is the traditional standby for low-light shooting, careful composition, and street shooting. This 35mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens recreates that experience for DX format shooters who have been seeking a comparable "normal" lens.
Note! DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with FX "full-frame" digital or 35mm SLR cameras.

I own a Nikon D3100 that I have become fairly accustumed with through use, a semester-long photography class, and just practice. My first purchase outside of the kit 18-55 lens was a 55-200, because I wanted more zoom capability. After having these two, on photo forums there were guys from the beginning stressing to get a prime lens to really teach you even more about photography, composition, etc.
I did a side by side comparison under the same light and was blown away with the results. Having the fast 1.8 aperture is truly the difference between a nice shot, and one that really stands out. I can't say enough good things about this lens, actually, it's making me dread putting on my others because the performance isn't nearly the same. Under low light conditions there is no way I'll ever shoot with my 18-55 again. Outside where its bright the aperture isn't as much of a deal breaker, but inside you can't compare unless you blow it out with flash.

I've been using this lens as my normal lens on a d90 now, taking the place of my 50mm f/1.8 Series E. There are two things about the 35mm that it does better for me. First, I like the field of view for 35mm a lot more than 50mm on a dx camera. Second, this lens is sharper than my 50mm f/1.8E. Unfortunately it seems to do about everything else than my 50mm, despite being a 20 year newer design. I'll hit on some strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths:
Size - not too much to say here..it's big enough for a great reasonable grip, the MF ring is easy to find. Nothing to complain about here.
Sharpness - it's usually pretty good in this respect, so good in fact I think that causes problems when it comes to the transition between in focus and out of focus, and the bokeh quality, but more on that later. This lens is a 3.5 out of 5 on sharpness in my book - pretty good with lenses like the 75-150 Series E getting a 4.5 and the 180/2.8 AIS (legendary) getting a 5. Do avoid being wide open when going for sharpness (as with about every other lens on the planet) but it doesn't take much stopping down for it to get its act together. At f/2.5 its output is pretty good.
Volume - it's AF motor is quiet. I can't think of any scenario in which it may be a problem.
Flare resistance - I haven't felt the need to use the supplied hood.
Weaknesses:
Image Quality - the lens is sharp, but the transition between the in focus areas and the out of focus areas is a clearly visible line. I'll avoid shallow depth of field photos with this lens. It's just disappointing.
- in addition the quality of the out of focus areas (bokeh) hasn't been so spectacular in my book. It's just not that smooth. The moderately fast aperture allows you to throw the background out of focus fairly easily, but with the quality of the oof areas leaves that fast aperture is for light gathering, not depth of field control, in my book.
Controls - I'm used to vintage lenses with a proper aperture control, using this G lens is simply put silly. The two control dials on my d90 that I must use with this lens to set exposure is such a clunky design. I can't believe it's the best Canon, Nikon, Pentax, all the dSLR makers have come up with. A proper aperture control ring puts both hands into play engaging more of the body. With an AF-S G lens my left hand has nothing to do, and it leaves me feeling more disconnected from the picture taking.
Bundled pouch - the pouch bundled for this lens is a joke.
Bottom line --
If you're looking for a lens to mount to take photos of friends that can handle the dark this is a great, inexpensive option. If you're looking for anything that involves throwing the background out of focus I'd look elsewhere.

This is a great little prime lens that provides beautiful bokeh and low-light capabilities indoors. I used it at a birthday party and came out with some awesome photos. Like most "fast" lenses be aware that at a wide open f-stop you have a very thin DOF.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens:
For DX cameras, no doubt the best affordable lens that I've ever used[*] is the Nikon 50mm f/1.4. That said, this little 35mm is a little less than half the price and packs 85% of the punch. Dial this baby down to f/2.5 and you get a very sharp photo with shallow depth of field. When dialed down to f/1.8, the result is not quite sharp but definitely acceptable. I like this lens alot. It's super light, a very good focal length for walking around, and cheap. I could drop this lens and buy another one and still be cheaper than the 50mm f/1.4. So, for good solid quality photos(much better than the kit lens) get this little 35mm f/1.8 DX and you won't need much else for daily pics.

I love this lens. It is fabulous for low light photography, and the general images come out very crisp. This is my first prime lens, and I am very happy with the focal distance as a normal every day lens. I have been shooting exclusively with this lens since I purchased it.
It gets a 4 because I have no idea how to figure out getting the focus to infinity. The focus wheel spins and spins, and there is no stop or catch to let you know that you are at or near infinity. I wanted a f1.8 lens for night photography, so this is quite a drawback.
Overall, I would highly recommend this lens and B+H. The product shipped fast (faster than I was promised!) and I have never had any issues with this company.

I bought the 35mm f/1.8 as a step up from the two kit zoom lenses I got with my D5100. I am shooting a lot of dances indoors, with limited lighting. The net result is that I am able to get get the shutter speed up, keep the ISO down, and get very clear photos.
In this environment, I am still pushing the limits of the lens, and notice I am getting a small amount of chromatic distortion on the edges of light fixtures, but the quality of the images are an order of magnitude better than what I was getting with the zoom.
I also spent a small amount of time shooting chickens with back lighting, and found that the lens did very well in that setting also. I was able minipulate f-stop for different depths of fields. And the color coming through the red combs was brilliant.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens:
I was torn between this lens and using a full frame FX prime lens for my DX bodies. Ultimately I went with the 35mm 1.8G DX Lens and am 100% happy with my purchase. Framing of course is almost identical to a full frame or film 50mm, lens is acceptably sharp wide open and sharpens up considerably at 2.2. Of course sharpening continues to increase until around F8. Auto-focus is outstanding, one of the faster DX lenses that I have encountered. Lens distortion is minimal and Adobe suites have a Lens Correction Profile which cleans things up nicely. Bokeh is great, most the time it's nice and creamy. Of course due to the nature of a crop sensor lens Bokeh would be more pronounced on a full frame SLR, but most people using a DX Body/ Lens like myself simply don't want/need to invest in FX full frame. I use my my cameras for product images and street photography and have no need to invest in full frame. This lens further opens up the possibilities for DX bodies making low light photos MUCH more doable at a reasonable ISO
