Product Highlights
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • RAID 0
  • RAID 1
  • Span
  • JBOD
  • Automatic Network Backup
  • Remote File Access
  • Mac and Windows Compatibility

The 4TB My Book World Edition II External Hard Drive from Western Digital is an external network hard drive with remote data access capability. The drive is extremely easy to configure, removing the headaches associated with configuring network storage devices. The drive is compatible with Mac and Windows computers, and includes network backup software.

The dual-drive system features RAID capability. It comes configured as a RAID 1, which gives you 2TB of usable capacity due to real-time data mirroring. Data is written simultaneously to both physical disks, ensuring that no information is lost if either fails. It can also be configured as a RAID 0 for maximum performance with no data protection, a Spanned array, or a JBOD.

Automatically backup data from all computers on your network
Configure as a RAID 0, RAID 1, Span, or JBOD
RAID 1 gives you real-time data protection at half capacity
RAID 0 writes data to both disks simultaneously, delivering full capacity and maximum performance; the downside is that if either drive fails, all data is lost
Span mode writes data to one disk until it is full, and then starts writing data to the next; this prevents you from losing all of your data if 1 of the 2 internal drives fails
JBOD treats the 2 internal disks as separate volumes
Restore lost, damaged, or older versions of files from backup via an intuitive software interface
Access stored data over the Internet via the MioNet service
Store your media and data on a central location, accessible from any computer on your network
USB port for storage expansion
Uses energy-efficient GreenPower WD drives

Ok for starters I want to get this review out for others considering this or the studio edition.
I am a mac user who has used WD before with total satisfaction. This product meets those same expectations but there are a few considerations.
First, I am skilled enough to get myself into trouble, but not enough to know how to easily use some of the more handy, not overly advanced functions of this unit without help from an IT person. This leaves me feeling slightly dissatisfied with it for not immediately being able to unleash its capability. I blame the instruction booklet, which clearly takes you through the menus but tells you nothing an average savy user can figure themselves, to set up the basic functions. ie it isn't exactly simple to grasp the various interfaces and functions of this thing like a regular harddrive unit(but it is much cooler.)
That said..installing on mac was easy. drag and drop files, recommend connecting via router to setup menu, shutting down, connect directly to your ethernet port to transfer large data collections. Speed = file use, streamin & download fast enough. operating menu & large media collection transfer or initial back up is slow unless hardwired with ethernet cable.
again on the wary side, its slightly confusing between signing in to the download folder,or back up folder, making public or private folders, using mio-net, or the twonky media etc, however perhaps its mildly confusing because it looks complex but yet everything is so self explanitory and seemed to work straightforward plug n play that you're sure you aren't getting all it has to offer unless you work in IT.
with ALL that said. on my mac it was plug n play, never installed the disc, as i already had the online manual and use time machine(which works very simply as expected)so no need for the back up software. Mionet software installed directly from the website. only thing disk is needed for would be when i add girlfriends PC to the LAN network where I will need the backup software and and other.(as a mac guy, not looking forward to actually following through the windows set up procedures to add roommates, girlfriends, families computers but i am sure it won't be too bad)
Best pros is that out of the box with little effort, it does give 2TB mirrored at great price, seamlessly streams my video collection, i can open Itunes and access a huge music library i can't store on my computer, and both macs and pcs can all play and backup in the same household, and seems to be easy enough to access it online as well...none of which do you get with a studio edition vs world edition. two different products really. Originally i was looking for storage and backup and simplicity(WD studio) i went for the play, household multi-format,streaming features(world edition),with slightly complex learning curve, but hey if u aren't frustrated with not knowing how to get its full potential unleashed, you won't go wrong.
streaming is fast. Configuration menus and library collection transfer is less than fast over wireless.

I had the 2x 1 TB version. While it worked, everything was fine to use it just as a Data container.

However, the NAS hardware failed after less than 2 years of just normal, moderate use.

I configured it as Raid 1 and felt secure, thinking my data was copied and mirrored onto two disks, so if one disk failed, the data would still be there. I did not care about make a backup, as I expected the data to be already backed up that way. However, I did not think about the case, that the device itself fails.

That is what happened: The disks are all right, but the NAS is down. It powers on, but does not connect to the LAN anymore (of course I tried everything from changing cables, changing the switch, connecting directly to the notebook). Anyway, there was no possibility to communicate with the NAS! And my entire photography archive was inside there... and only there.

So... I still have manufacturer's warranty on it, but what the heck does this help, if there is a risk, that I send it to WD and get a brand new device in return, with lovely blank hard disks inside? WD links to data recovery services - however, you pay a monthly rent for them only to pick up the phone...

I had to pull out one disk, open a computer, connect it to the SATA cable, and mount it with a Linux operating system (I used Knoppix that worked very well... however, I had to learn it).

There is NO possibility of accessing the Disk over Windows. The data is stored in a partition formatted with the XFS file system, and there is no windows driver available for this (Ext2IFS or Ext2FSD and other software I found do NOT support XFS).

If you are aware of this, the WD NAS is a nice cheap handy tool. If you are not aware and feel secure (as WD makes us believe), you risk to get a bad surprise and invest a lot of money or a week-end (unless you are a Linux expert): You will have to get a desktop computer, a Linux boot cd like knoppix, you will learn how to mount a disk in linux, and as (for a usual Windows user) everything looks pretty unfamiliar, you may have a difficult moment being scared of making some mistake and loose data...

The story had a happy end for me (my pictures are back), but I spent much more time for this data recovery process, than I saved money by buying the cheapest option.

I got myself a "ReadyNAS" now, hoping that it will last longer. This one uses Ext3/Ext4 that can be accessed through Windows.

Comments about Western Digital 4TB My Book World Edition II External Hard Drive:

I purchased the 2TB version of this drive twice now - once after the 1st one failed after a firmware update, which took about 8 hours to get the data off it, and the 2nd one is now starting to fail too.

Each drive has lasted about 1.5 years before slowing file transfers to a crawl. Something in the RAID or controller hardware isn't quite right. You can't beat the price for a small RAID storage device and gigabit connectivity, and it worked well for our small business -- until it fails.

I can't recommend this particular WD product. Buyer beware.

Comments about Western Digital 4TB My Book World Edition II External Hard Drive:

I do not use the installation software and can not comment on it being good or bad. You can use this system with MAC and Windows PC without any software. I only want it to work as a server, and it does it very well.

The first one (1tb) had a drive fail out of warranty. I bought the duplicate drive rebuilt the RAID mirror and it failed a few months late. Western Digital replaced the whole unit with a larger (2tb) one of the same model. As I am running out of space I had to buy the a new one (4tb).

The only thing I read that worries me is the review from someone who points out that if the encloser failes you might be in trouble. But at this point I have three units, WD ended up returning the first problem unit and letting me keep it. As with all tech support they usually are only good for very basic problems, but they replaced my unit so I am happy.

I only use it as a server for my home network, no remote access. I do not use the software. The unit keeps all my important files on mirrored drives, and I do backup the accounting files to local hard drives so the only way to lose data would require two seporate systems with three hard drives to fail at the same time. The WD is connected to a UPS system and runs 24/7. They do send any activity to several email addresses.

I can not stress enough to use a UPS, When the lights flicker my computers, server, phone, internet, and the routers to drive them keep on ticking.

I only gave it four stars because the operating system is on the hard drives not on dual flash memory cards to make this almost bulletproof.

I might build a FREENAS system one day. I have been planning to do one for years. If built properly it would be better than anything available.

Comments about Western Digital 4TB My Book World Edition II External Hard Drive:

I got this for the convenience of network storage and it's been great for that. Although I use a different (usb) drive for system backups, I also store current copies of all my files and folders on the WB as an extra precaution and use it to exchange data between computers. I love that I can mount and unmount it wirelessly as a password-protected network drive at any time, on any computer, using any OS, from anywhere in the house, and that any number of computers can all use it simultaneously. Internally, WB stores data on a Linux ext filesystem that never needs to be defragmented. This is a huge convenience factor and timesaver that I've not seen mentioned in other reviews. The web admin interface is easy to use and works well. I can't say the same for the flakey flash application that WD (unfortunately) offers as the primary user interface. My advice would be to go straight to the web interface and configure everything there.I can't comment on the streaming video or audio, since I don't use it for that.Several people have complained that it's slow. I don't find that to be the case. Even with RAID configured, it's at least as fast as any other network filesystem I've used. Wireless data transfer in general isn't going to be near as fast as an internal drive, or even an external usb device. So if you want fast-fast-fast don't get wireless datastorage. Get a bigger internal drive instead. But if you want a convenient network storage device for a very good price, this a good choice.

Comments about Western Digital 4TB My Book World Edition II External Hard Drive:

I'm in IT, usually I don't read instructions. I had to read instructions to find out how to get to the web interface. It was not easy on a mac. It should be.

I was going to use this laptop as my lightroom library, it won't work. Lightroom doesn't like network storage. My fault for not knowing.

Tranfer rate is so slow! 1TB takes about 1.5 days to transfer.

I gave it three stars because it was not easy to use, the web interface was clunky not user friendly, and transfer was slow over network. I like the large storage, but realistically its meant strictly for archiving data, not for everyday use.

I couldn't even get the software installed on a Windows 7 machine. I loaded the CD, accepted the license and started the software install. Nothing went past 'preparing'. There is no way to get the OS to recognize the drive. I have other WD external drives that were extremely simple to set up. I guess there's a reason this one comes pre-formatted for Mac - because it doesn't work with Windows.

I mainly bought it for time machine and for torrent download
Once I upgraded the software the set up of Time machine was easy and straigt forward.
The only problem was that I could not move my old Time Machine backups to "My book World" (as my previous backups were not case sensitive) so I had to start with a new time machine backup.
As I run on WIFI the back ups are slow...

I like very much the Twonky server in the Mbw, I have VLC player on my iMac so I can stream video from Mbw to the iMac

Using the Mbw for storage and time machine it´s very easy, using it for other task it´s complicated

Getting the torrents to work was a pain as they refuse to download unless you edit them (I use torrenteditor) to exclude ALL the UDP trackers... It only allow three active torrents at a time, and ctorrent is buggy...

No luck with WDPhotos on my Nexus S, first I got the "no device" error, later a I got another error, I gave up soon with this one as I prefer using Picasa web albums.

My book world won´t work with iTunes 10.5 with the 1.02.12 (10/19/2011) firmware

No luck either with my Momento digital picture frame as it refuses to connect to My Book World.

This product is very close to plug and play, great for someone who works with computers and udnerstands the lingo, but can't set up their own system from scratch. It's fast, easy to operate, takes very little space, and is intelligently designed. However, the documentation that comes with it is terrible. I had to go back through it several times to understand it and apply it, and sometimes just wing it. Luckily it's nto complicated and I was able to fiure it out. The thing is, it's so simple and easy, teh documentation could have been more concise, direct and accurate. NEeds some serious work.

I needed a bu and mirror that I didn't have to connect by USB to 3 computers in my house. I finally decided that this would be it, since I valued and trusted Western Digital. [...]The NAS was a little hard to set up, and their bu software does not bu the whole HD, just docs and important files. I wanted everything.

The hard drive worked right out of the box on my MacBook pro. I couldn't upgrade the firmware through the settings page.

There was no clear description on how to change settings on the hard drive. Etc. But google is my friend.

A lot of space for a decent amount of money. I will connect it to a router and use it wirelessly. For now, I use it through the LAN cable connected straight to my laptop. Which give me about 15mb per second transfer with large files and about 11 with small files. It's perfect for back up, etc. Definitely not for use as a graphics program buffer. Or as a video storage for editing.

Comments about Western Digital 4TB My Book World Edition II External Hard Drive:

I am using this to store all my photos and music and back up my laptop computers.

It was very easy to set up and get going. The data transfer was a bit slow but not arduous. The transfered data is very easy to access from the laptop and performance is good.

It includes software to automatically backup multiple computers. It was very easy to configure and get going.
