Product Highlights
  • Waterproof & Fogproof

The Nikon 8.5x45 Monarch X is a fully loaded roof prism binocular with cutting edge design cues and an attractive price for the excellence in optics and handling that's delivered.

The 42mm Monarchs have been rather universally lauded as having generally no weakness; sharp, svelte, swift, and strong, they're just awfully good at everything and that's why they're so popular in the marketplace.  The Monarch X adds some recent evolvements and gives you a few more precious millimeters of light gathering capacity while keeping the weight impressively low.  Nikon employs their exclusive lead and arsenic free "Eco-Glass" for all the lens and prism elements here, and every surface receives several layers of sophisticated multicoatings.  The prism coatings employed are Nikon's very best, borrowed from the >$1000 EDG.

All of Nikon's binocular line is backed up by the "No-Fault" lifetime warranty.  Regardless of what happens to your binoculars, even of your own negligence, Nikon will repair or replace (at their option) your binocular for just $10 plus the return shipping costs.

Fully multicoated optics giving contrasty, highly-resolving viewing
Dielectric high-reflectivity prism coatings (previously available only upon the flagship EDG) raise entire-color-spectrum transmissivity
Open bridge styling eases gripping of objective tubes
Rubber armored, 100% waterproof housing
Light polycarbonate construction reinforced with fiberglass and carbon fiber
Smooth, enlarged center focus dial dominates bridge profile and is easily operated with gloves
Soft thumb position depressions stay contoured to your particular digits for repeated use
Eye relief of 20.6mm should be sufficient for any users
Turning eyecups with multiple stopping positions
56-72mm Interpupillary distance adjustment range

I got this on Dec 18 and I was off to Chilka, Orissa, India to watch the winter visitors. For those of you who are not familiar, Chilka is one of the largest (in Asia) brakish water lake/wetland system.

The sharpness of the objects (birds in this case) were excellent. This was in comparison to an older Nikon (Monarch) binocular I used from a friend and was almost (closer than the price) comparable to a pair of Leica.

Color saturation was really good. I compared it with my Nikon RA III 82A WP spotting scope while looking at the same object.
The color was much better and natural in the binocular.

For years, I had hard time to find a binocular that I could use with ease while wearing my high powered glasses (-8.0 D). This binocular gave me a nice sight without making me dizzy.

It is really light and easy to carry.
      Some negatives now:

      1. The eyepiece cap (two joined together) is use less. It does not stay on, no matter what you do.

      2. Object cap is attached to the body with snap in mechanism and they dangle when you are looking through the bins. One came out while I was
in the boat. Fortunately, it fell in the boat. I would have preferred the caps that I could take out and put in the case before use. I can still take them out but that leave me with two holes in the body where the dust can get in.

      3. A rod in the center was probably added for additional rigidity for longitudinal alignment.
I don't really know what it is for. It was not there in the earlier Monarchs. The rod makes it
difficult to wrap your finger around the barrels.
I hope, Nikon has good technical reason to keep that rod. Otherwise, it will be better to get rid of it in the next version.

I purchased the Monarch X glasses to place an old set of Nikons which I now whish I had decided to have serviced instead. The optical performance of the Monarch X binoculars are outstanding. I have since discovered however, these glasses have been discontinued by Nikon and that they were made in China. While quality goods do come out of China so do inferior items made to price rather than quality. My Monarch Xs failed while I was in Africa and I decided to attempt to repair them myself with Leatherman tools. What I found when I pulled the focus mechanism apart was cheap plastic components and loose screws. These components failed and I am presently trying to get some support from Nikon in terms of replacement parts.

Comments about Nikon 8.5x45 Monarch X Binocular:

My primary uses for this binocular are birding, wildlife viewing, and astronomy, for all of which it fits the bill for me very nicely. The first thing that stands out to me is the brightness, sharpness, and level of detail this binocular achieves. The field of view is average but the level of sharpness to the edge of the field helps to get the most out of the FoV. The focus wheel is perfectly dampened and goes about 1 1/4 turns from lock to lock which works well for me. Close focus on mine is just under 8 feet. I am very impressed with the balance and comfort both for holding and the eye cups. Coming from a photography background, the level of chromatic abberation in binoculars as compared to modern camera lenses is certainly noticeable. But within the design limitations that binoculars impose and especially at this price point it is negligible. The worst thing with this binocular is the eye cup cover and objective lens cover design. However, I found two easy fixes: 1)for the eye cup cover I put 3 layers of glossy electrical tape on the inside of the covers (it grips the eye cups better but still enables easy removal) 2) I placed a tiny bead of silicone in each of the attachment points for the objective covers (the ones that always fall out on Monarchs of this generation) and that has kept them in place nicely. The stock strap is better left in the package. I have had great success with Tamrac N-45 straps on my cameras so I tried one on the binocular and it works just fine. Be warned that this binocular does not use the standard 1/4" tripod adapter. You need to use a wraparound style adapter like the Nikon Binoc-U-Mount if you are going to use it on a tripod. I don't need glasses at this point but kept eye relief in mind when selecting these and they worked fine with sunglasses. All in all I am very happy with this binocular.

Very high quality optics for the price. Not that I'm an expert but I could not tell the difference between these Nikons and the Euro- brands that priced at four times more than these Nikons.

Comments about Nikon 8.5x45 Monarch X Binocular:

I bought these binoculars for bird watching and wildlife viewing and was looking for binoculars that would be bright enough for low light use and also have a sharp image for bird identification after much research, I chose the Nikon 8.5 X 45 Monarch X. I was not disappointed. I do think that Nikon could have done better designing the lens caps, but this is a minor complaint.

I really am enjoying this binoculars. The clarity and magnification they afford for bird watching and watching lizards is great. Their close focus is super for viewing the lizards in my yard that are often within 10 feet. After many years of using a pair of lesser quality lenses, the view these Nikons afford was well worth the price!

Comments about Nikon 8.5x45 Monarch X Binocular:

Replacing old binoculars, very glad now that I spent a few extra dollars and got these. I use them for general purpose terrestrial (birds, hiking, air shows, etc) and although they were not intended for it, astronomy too. Images are very clear and sharp. Detail in bird feathers is incredible. I wear glasses, and find they have plenty of eye relief. They are very light and comfortable to hold for long periods. Comparing them to "well-known brand" 15x70 astronomy binoculars, they are just as bright, much more comfortable to use, and the lower magnification reduces the effect of shaky hands. The best astronomical uses are for larger objects, like comets, the moon, conjunctions etc. The Milky Way on a dark clear night is stunning through these! Mechanically, they operate smoothly and have a nice solid feel. I'm not too keen on the design of the lens caps, the objective caps tend to flop back in front of the lenses when you look up. Easy to get around that by swivelling the caps out of the way, but I'd rather not have to bother. Overall, very pleased with the quality of construction, clarity and brightness.

I'm an active birder and have used the Nikon 8X42 Monarch Binoculars for several years and have been happy with them except in low light situations. I decided to purchase the 8.5 X 45 Monarch X because of the better lense coating and bigger objective lens. They are also at this time affordable. Having used them for about 2 weeks now I'm very happy with them especially in low light. They are heavier then my old Monarchs but not so much that it makes a difference. They seem to be well constructed (time will tell). Since I don't use objective lens covers,(see other reviews) they are not an issue for me. The slightly extra magnification is noticeable and a plus.

The focus ring feels a little slack. The gearing could be better.

Comments about Nikon 8.5x45 Monarch X Binocular:

Both front lens caps on my "Monarch X" binoculars disappeared in the first month. I have since learned from other bird watchers that these poorly-designed caps for Nikon's very popular "ATB" and "X binocular series have been a continual problem and un-redesigned for almost ten years!
                        Why can't Nikon provide a re-designed cap?

Comments about Nikon 8.5x45 Monarch X Binocular:

I also own the 10.5x 45 in the monarch X.
I wanted one binocular for high power and detail recognition and one for birding and low light events.
These two models are just a treat. Sharp, bright and excellent balance.
For the money they perform brilliantly.

The sharpness reaches to the very edges of the filed, just like my (now sold) Swarovski 10x42's.
Thanks Nikon for the time to make and affordable quality binocular.

Comments about Nikon 8.5x45 Monarch X Binocular:

Comments about Nikon 8.5x45 Monarch X Binocular:

We use this product almost solely for birding. A direct comparison with an old pair of a competitor's 10 x 40 binoculars was no contest. The Nikon Monarch 8.5 x 45 binoculars are outstanding in terms of brightness and sharpness. We would recommend them to anyone. The only drawback is the that the eyepiece dust cover does not fit snugly.
